Places to play sports for FREE in qatar?????

bobo
By bobo

Okay I play basketball and football/soccer...I just cant seem to find anywhere to play now in Qatar!!!!

Its either you have to pay(membership), you have to join, its only for families, the qatari schools dont allow you, what the heck!??

Isnt football supposed to be the major sport here yet I cannot find anywhere to play. I found some park near the Land Mark called "Dahl Al Hamam FAMILY park" well they told me I couldnt play basketball because its for families only...Hahaha whatta joke! This is unbelievable and Im losing my mind literally...

All Im asking is for a place to simply walk in, and do my thing. Possibly, meet some others and place a game. Period.

Please help!

So I went and met up with Hussamf today, but no one else showed up. What happened folks? Alright well, it was pretty last minute. But we're going to try and have a game next Friday (23 Feb) around 1 PM. Just show up to the Al-Sadd stadium practice fields. It'll be fun!

I'd like to find a nice lap pool open to the public. I know a couple of hotels have good pools for swimming laps, but the membership fees are huge. I even went so far as to go to the Sports City (former Asian Games) pool the other night to see if they were open to the public -- they're not, they are Aspire-only.

Does anyone know if there is a pool I can use without being a member?

I ditto the swimming request. Its such a shame we can't use the Asian games pool esp after work.

Most the hotel pools 2 small.

hey guys... lebtarek has a group of 5, taansari a group of +/- 5, and I'm sure there are other guys who want to play football (like me !!!). So let's have a small match together!!!

Maybe tomorrow?

Oh, but I don't know where to play - maybe there is any possibility at Khalifa sport centre?

Hussamf: no possibility at Al-Sadd Club?

By anonymous• 8 Feb 2007 16:30

Lebtarek, we're a group of 5 (maybe more, depending on where we end up playing) who are also interested in some pick up games of football. Do you know of any good places around here to play?

Bobo,

I'm really interested as well in playing basketball. Tell me if you found something interesting at Doha Junior High School, or anywhere else.

Hussamf, are you still interested in playing soccer at Al-Sadd? I've got at least half a dozen folks who want to participate. I think we can get some good games going if we organize something soon (and once this rain dies down a little bit!). Let me know what's possible.

By anonymous• 3 Feb 2007 16:14

Hussam, I like the idea. I'll speak to some of my work colleagues and get back to you about how many in number you can expect from my side. You can certainly count me in for the time being!

Any other folks interested?

Ok not sure if you all care but I heard that they are proposing to build some new parks and facilities sometime soon...These should possibly contain sporting areas, so I guess I can wait for that, if I'm still here.

Thanx guys...

NO I am not going to play rugby or gaelic football, but thank you very much.

As for the Qatar University, I know to get past the guards you need someone to get you past. I dont know anyone in QU so forget that idea. But thanx anyways :)

When I find something I will post it so you guys can help out another BoBo who asks.

I saw some boys playing football in an empty area near the MacDonalds off TV Roundabout. You could try there.

You can try the Qatar Univ. campus, just ask where the Qatar Univ. Street is and do down it, it'll just lead you to the main gate for the sports campus of QU. I've been there for a couple of times for soccer,it was very nice...Ive also seen their swimming pool, it's an olympic one and it's beautiful...I can't really remember if i've noticed any basketball courts over there buti'm sure there must be a couple of them at least.

bobo why don't you learn rugby? It is the only really active club for expats around.

They play touch rugby 3 nights a week over summer (although pitch is being dug up for August) and this is a great way to learn.

The season proper starts in september with pre-season training beginning mid august. There are home and away games every weekend until April. Teams are Dubai (3), abu dhabi, sharjah, muscat, Bahrain.

You do have to pay though. However annual membership is about QR700 so it won't break the bank.

I told the story of how I wound up living with my parents again after 9 years under Accomodation 1. I do not enjoy it, and actually I do pay for food, because I feel guilty about living here with them. They don't pay rent, so I don't have to, but I do buy my Mom flowers and stuff and do a lot of the cleaning. So...

Beast, remember I do live with my parents so there are VERY BIG downsides to living on this compound.

BoBo, Ramada isn't too expensive and it has a gym, but yes, without access to excerise you will gain the Doha dozen.

It's funny how very little neighborliness exists in compounds. And the kids; some of them are like the Mongol Hordes.

Thanx guys for the tips, which were ummm some what helpful?

dohagirl, if I dont find nothing I might go ahead and ask where you live. It seems like having a fast food joint everywhere and getting fat is the master plan. God forbid we have many sport alternatives here. *Mind the sarcasm*

Move to a compound I have a basketball court, football field, gym and pool for free. :D Course everyone on my compound is old and married so it isn't a good place to meet people. :(

Try a Playstation or Xbox.

Let me know if you find anything remotely football-like.

You can try emailing William Lawson at [email protected]. He's a coach at one of the clubs and does training for kids also.

Down around the Corniche, otherwise there is no place, sorry. You'll have to meet people at the crappy bars like everyone else. Or join a club.
