Pet Peeves

By Paul R

We all have our pet peeves in Qatar, whether its Landcruisers, traffic jams, QL posts you cannot understand etc. But what is that little thing that really gets to you?

To kick it off mine is......BROKEN BISCUITS !
I cannot tell you how many times I have bought a pack of Digestives from one of the stores here only to open a pack of crumbs. How do they do it?

Pleaaaseee. I know a little culture never hurt anyone. Being a monkey is encouraged here. They clean the roads every day. They dont have rubbish bins. The roads are simply screaming "Throw rubbish HERE"

Welcome to qatar jane.

Great reflex, Oryx. And how was that received? Did it get thrown back out?

One time i was walking down the street and someone tossed a can out of the window which hit me.

So i tossed it back in the car.

I cringe at the sight of all of the litter here. ...and it's not just loose paper that has accidentally blown out the window of the car. One morning as I drove into Hamad Hospital, I was behind a white Land Cruiser. All of a sudden, out the front passenger's window goes flying a half finished cup of coffee (paper cup and all). My exclamation of "Pig!" barely left my lips when a second cup went out the window. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. Civilized people do not behave this way. Every morning when I come into work, the parking lot is littered with just about anything you can think of (baby diapers; bottles; cans; fast food cups, containers, and bags; broken perfume bottles; hala cards; shopping bags, etc., etc.) It looks as if there was a tailgate party there the night before. They leave their trash for someone else to deal with. Where's the personal responsibility? Another time I watched a Filipino as he was walking across an open lot drinking a can of pop (soda). When he finished, he just dropped the can on the ground. I couldn't believe it! No wonder there's so much litter around Doha. These people have no respect for themselves nor for the country in which they were born/live.

xyned - not all public toilets are messy. Malls in Dubai manage to keep their toilets spic and span like a five star hotel, so why can't Shitty Centre do the same? It's a pet peeve of mine too - and don't get me started about the horrible, inadequate toilets at Doha airport arrivals hall. Not a good first impression of the country - most people come off a long-haul flight and want to use the toilet. There are only two WC's in the ladies, one of which is usually not working, the other will be dirty and the floor swamped with water. Not nice. Yuk yuk yuk

#1-true that

2#-nah. its exaggeration

3#-happens all the time. Not just in qatar

4#- Why? Excercise is no high school detention.

5#-if there are no 'No smoking' signs and security guards are busy munching kebabs. Can't help it

6#-all public toilets are unkept. Everywhere in the world. At least, city centre ones get cleaned every hour.

7#-True that. I found out from a friend who calls these greedy domineering egyptians as 'fallaheens'. He tells, not all egyptians were created the same.

However, tag teaming of leb-egypt due to common language ties and preferential treatment at work is a reality you need to live with. Get into engineering or some other technical field and you will see there are less of such people hogging the workplace. Those who are there are way more civil, social and considerate

8#- Can't help it. Its just south east asian culture (refer back to my older posts). Modern day flesh selling harlots have raised the bar and the game

9#-don't be so naive.... We're all as dishonest as the next person.

10#-Its qatar for gods name. They won't change until the next gulf war.

1. Most drivers on road. Where did they get the license from?

2. Not switching phone to silent mode in meetings.

3. Not switching phone to silent mode in cinema halls and talking away during films.

4. Gym goers exercising with their phones. What is this all about???

5. Smoking in places where you are not suppose to smoke like the malls.

6. The awful toilet inside Shitty Center cinema.

7. Gangs of Eqyptian mafias, white mafias, lebanese mafias... all kinds of gang "mafias" at work... ganging up just because they are from the same country or skin colour. How can any company progress like this?

8. Expats taking Qatari bosses for rides by selling saliva but do very little to help the company and country. I hate this the most and I am an expat here.

9. Dishonest ppl... this is the easiest kinda of ppl to spot.

10. Karwa service or should I say no service.

I kinda agree with U, the attitude displayed is more of 'Want it take it...if not place it.Also majority of us scrunch at the thought of facing traffic n playing the 'I spotted the parking slot 1st' game so we choose not to return it. I have faced the same too n have also visualised kids throw packs on the floor...but i found a way...stretch ur hand in2 the far end n try grabbing one of the deep end packs...It wrkd for me;;))

1. The kind of people that stare at you for no apparent reason. Probably think you're from another planet or something.

2. People who try to rip you off thinking that just because you're an ex-patriot means that you've just arrived in the country and don't know what's what.

3. Driving boogers

I must admit every visit to Paul is fun (or annoying), last visit I ordered the Salmon Tart with salad and asked for a side of wedges. The waiter told me I couldn't have the wedges, I asked why, he said it's not allowed, I said they are on the menu, he said Yes but you are not allowed. So now I'm thinking maybe new law that bans fish and potato products being on the same plate. I then add mushroom soup to the order, and get chicken ! When the tart arrives so does a portion of wedges....go figure !.

My wife orders pizza, she is told no pizza, she says it's on the menu, he says yes, but we don't do it.

Still the bread is great !

By tallg• 9 Jun 2009 12:48

Yep - friend of mine said they'd started doing that in Paul. They said to him QR5 for milk in his tea. He said NO WAY, and the gave it to him for free.

I mean, seriously, QR5 for a SPLASH of milk. They're taking the piss.

By sknox40• 9 Jun 2009 12:45

Well Paul R., so funny that you just happened to ask this today. I just got home from PAUL (the restaurant) and they charged me QR5 to add milk to my coffee! I was so peeved I went off in a rant on my blog! Geez.

In a similar vein to the broken biscuits - bruised fruit and veg, mainly caused by the way the shelf stackers at Carrefour throw the produce onto the shelves.

And general, just the poor quality of fruit and veg available here.

By King Edshel• 9 Jun 2009 10:43

the last one, that should be really disgusting and awful ...

Why the biscuits are like that? could be simple as:

The loader drop it while shipping it ...

A customer was checking those and drop them ...

Another customer tried to pick it up, but he drop another one instead ...

Someone saw him doing that, did the same to get even ...

Someone took it already home and after a fight why did he bring it, he return it again ...

or maybe you are just unlucky enough to have those biscuits broken every time you buy them. I consider you luck as I'm buying those to make cheese cake, that would save the time crushing them :)

Pet Peeves:

"Honkers" - Those idiots that have no regard for others and honk their car horns at all hours of day or night, often just to call their servant......

"Drifters" - Those idiots you can hear driving and screeching their tires as they 'drift'.....

"Plonkers" - Those idiots that cut the cue at the traffics signals!

"Chippers" - Those idiot that have a huge CHIP on their shoulders and would read this post as a personal attack on them.............

Queue jumpers in the traffic... you know... the traffic light seems to take FOREVER to turn green, you're in the right lane... and some idiot just goes on the (I'll call it) emergency lane and gets in the queue right in the front... and not just one driver... LOADS OF THEM! The queue jumpers everywhere else.. but I always get SUPER upset when that happens and complain...

I used to get REALLY annoyed by the slow walkers on the malls... but I'm now more relaxed, unless I'm in a hurry...

But my peeve is more than just broken biscuits, it's the lack of care. We seem to accept that products in the stores are crushed, broken, dented or just don't work.
