Nobel laureate’s wife cut off from outside world (AFP)

22 November 2010, LONDON — The wife of jailed Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo has been completely cut off from the outside world since being put under house arrest following last month’s prize announcement, a report said Monday.

Liu Xia’s telephone and Internet connections have been blocked and she has not been allowed to leave the couple’s high-rise Beijing flat for almost a month, The Times said, quoting sources with knowledge of her family.
The report said she is allowed a daily phone call with her mother, but that is monitored by police.
She also cannot leave to buy food — she must inform officers what she wants to eat for her evening meal so they can bring dishes from restaurants.

“The Chinese government reacted angrily to the Nobel prize committee’s decision to award the peace prize to Liu Xiaobo, a dissident who is serving an 11-year jail sentence on subversion charges after calling for political reform.

He will not be allowed to collect the prize at next month’s ceremony in Oslo

The Times reported that a few days after the prize announcement on October 8, Liu Xia was allowed to visit shops, go to her parents’ house and even take walks in the park as long as she was escorted by police.

..... and they call themselves the peoples republic. Its just another matter whether they listen to their people at all.

You haven't been to Burma.....

I went to Tibet for Eid for sure the Chinese had provided modern infrastructure....but at a cost of eradicating a wonderful culture.

The Tibetans were delightful but it was so sad.

And in what way China seeks to eradicate poverty by propping up North Korea....and throwing back defectors to a country where many are starving...

Enhancing whose civilisation???? Not the Burmese. Not the Tibetans. Not the North Koreans.

Chinese government are improving the life of Chinese people, trying best to demolish the poverty, removing the starvation, enhancing the civilization, popularizing the education to people.

So, I wonder why this government will crumble?

China also demands that India should give one of it's states Arunachal Pradesh to them as it belongs to them, how it belongs to them.. I can't figure out till date...

They also have taken 1/3rd of Kashmir which everyone seems to forget about in India-Pak dispute over the matter.

How do you make a comment on a thread 'professionally'?

Is there some sort of qualification you need to be able to post......

Fair point WK - India seems to allow open reporting by both national and international journalists.

China....where to start? and we would never finish.

Took Tibet, owns Nepal and props up North Korea....

How do u know it's not sustainable?

Why do u hope the regime crumbled?

How much do u know about China? How do you comment your regime?

If u know nothing about China, it's better to be silent for other countries!

For God Sake!

People say Qatar shouldn't get the world cup for reasons from the stupid (overflowing drain in a street) to the valid (unfair crowd control).

Really they are minor issues (apart from heat) compared to China....and it got the Olympics!

WK, knowing the Japanese, they will come up with something to replace what they can't get.

And that will upset china for sure...another reason why Japan will try to do it.Plus, they need to keep their markets going.

There is no other source of rare earth except China so the Japanese are stuck. There are minor reserves in India & USA but they weren't developed as China was exporting it so cheap already and has got over 95 % of the world's reserves..

By anonymous• 22 Nov 2010 22:38

Just yesterday I was watching on Al Jazeera a report about China blocking export of rare earth metals to Japan. Without them, there can not be any electronics item. China is looking to monopolise that entire segment. Japanese were complaining and will be interesting to see how long China can keep a block on that.

By nomerci• 22 Nov 2010 22:34

brit, it IS sustainable because they have modified it. People are making money, and live reasonably well. The better off they are, the less they care about "right" and "wrong".

A few are noble, like this dissident...and everybody sees what it gets them. There is still a lot of spying and informing going on. There.....

What counts in china at this time is money, they have suffered so much, now they want to life as well as possible.

And they are still quite indoctrinated, but don't mind because they are not suffering and their country is powerful now, alas, a big ego boost for them.

By GodFather.• 22 Nov 2010 22:29
GodFather.

China is a big power in the world financial markets. Why award a Nobel Peace prize to someone who seems to on a war path with the state?

Just playing the devils adovocate here. Why mess with China? What has Dalai Lama acheived that this dissedent will acheive.. again just putting the view from the otherside..:)

It's all about indoctrination and the common good. China, like japan and Iran comprises mainly of people of the same ethnic origins.. hence , divisions are harder to forge...

china has to liberalise sooner or later as their model is not sustainable...maybe once the double digit growth subsides or when Yuan is made convertible.
