To parents who left their two boyz 7-8 year olds in villaggio at 12 midnight all alone, If you have been in UK or US you could be charged with negligence, face a prison sentence and loose custody.

UmmJake, it really is terrible to feel so helpless, and not be able to help the child in need.

Every country has it's fair share of ills and Qatar will eventually grow (it already has in so many ways)with its social services. Human rights, protection..........Animal rights (which is close to my heart) will all need to be addressed if Qatar wishes to take it's place amongst the 1st world countries.

China may have the highest economic growth rate of the century, but they are still a third world country until they can respect human rights.

Money and power is not everything.

ok, bla bla............a bit off topic now..........so I'm off! :)

I discovered a similar abhorrent parenting incident several months ago, and even asked friends who are counselors here and have contacts within the local (Qatari) community of social services what I could do, which organization I could call that would do some official follow up on the kids/family to ensure they were safe and being properly supervised.

And I was pretty much told point blank that unless something awful befalls the kids (drowned in the pool where they played unattended or something like that), the authorities are unlikely to get involved because stuff like this is viewed as a private family matter, whether they are Qatari or expat Arab or another nationality.

In my many years teaching here in Qatar, I have come across young kids that I knew were being beaten at home, girls who were being sexually abused by a male family member, and the more-common scenario of kids constantly left unsupervised by their parents...and there is jack all that you can do to help them.

It's quite sad....

They will not remove children from the family house here, even if there is ongoing abuse and the perpetrator is a family member who lives there with them. Gulf Arab society is far too traditional to allow such a thing. Imagine the loss of face someone would suffer if that happened! They simply won't publicly embarrass someone, even if it means letting an abusive situation continue...

Davidak89, I could not have put it better! LOL "should not be allowed to breed!" PML! LOL!

@Dora, my god! 7year old already drunk and sniffing glue? God help us! Oh, and yes I absolutely agree, 8pm max for bedtime!

Sad thing is that some parents here weren't themselves raised by parents; but by their nannies. How do you expect to see a parent nurture and love their own children when they themselves lacked the care they deserved.

At least not everyone is as callous and downright stupid as the parents of the two boys in question.

I wonder what would happen if 'social services' (if there is such a thing here...) or worse........... came and took them?

Yes that is very sad to hear NFH. I can't beleive anyone would leave their wee ones at a mall alone at midnight... And yea Dora they woulden't be very awake for school the next day either.

So much sillyness here i do say.

Davidak, of course there are prowlers around, looking for kiddies, but people have their heads in the sand and choose to believe child molestation doesn't happen here.

Of course it does! But just like most other crimes that take place in this country, it's ignored and/or covered up.

Very sad.

i always anxious leaving my 7 yrs old for an hour for after school activities. Leave alone leaving him outside the mall in the middle of the night.

All children should be in bed by 8pm! Would these children be expected to go to school the next day and not fall asleep?

By anonymous• 11 Mar 2009 16:38

Well, thats exactly where they may have gone!

I'm suprised there aren't any prowlers out there keen on snatching some kiddies. Maybe that would teach some parents a lesson.

By arecel• 11 Mar 2009 14:00

whatever the reasons of the parents, kids should not be left alone especially in public places. and at midnight? are they nuts?!! they should be in bed before 10PM for god's sake.

I think some people have missed the point here. The "whole story" is secondary. The "why" is irrelevant. What matters is that two young children were left alone for a significant period of time at night. What more information could you need in order to be able to say, "Oh, that's all right then"?

This reminds me of the story from the UAE of a father who dropped his two young children off at the swimming pool.

He went off shopping for a few hours and came back to collect them, only to find that his two young sons had both drowned while he was gone.

I guess he figured someone else would be watching them while he was off doing something else.

It happens here,, ppl leave their kids in the malls or playground and go for whatever reason!

Reminds of the Al Bida Park playground next to the Heritage Village, we took our kids there,, at abt 8pm or so.. soon my daughter made a friend there.. a girl same of her age 7.. after a while we called our kids for some snacks and along came that girl.. my wife asked her where her parents were and if they know she was here with us.. to our surprise she said that her parent left her and her elder sister here and went for shopping!!!"????" we were in shock.. how could parents leave their children (GIRLS!!) age 7 & 9 at a park and go shopping!

well my wife asked her where her sister was and we spotted her.. we tried to call her but she never came anyways we kept an eye on both of them, and i told my wife to talk to her mother abt this,, we kinda did the babysitting till abt 10pm when their parents arrived,, but before we could talk to her parents the girls ran towards a car sat and took off!... and we are like WTH!!!

Anyways we happened to go there again after a few weeks,. and guess what?? my daughter met her friend again!! same situation.... its seems like its a normal thing for them,, leaving their kids at park and shop PEACEFULLY!!??????

I would never let my kids out of my sight even for friction of time! but.. yet they manage to escape!!

but as I see it, giving "perceptions" thru this thread is not healthy (my opinion only). You want people to "bark" and hate the parents (don't even sure if they were with their parents), well in fact, we don't have the complete story! Well, no offense, Hapy. Really good intentions but uncalled for!

I don't know for how long they were there i spotted them while going in into the parking, and i left after 15-20 minutes and they were still there, i had to turn the left side to speak to them, which i was not supposed to as cars come from that side. I turned back and took a turn around the back of carrefour to come to them from the proper side, i planned to stay with them for some time, and inform the security if no one picked them, but, by the time i came back, tehy were gone.

By anonymous• 11 Mar 2009 12:09

how long were the kids left alone. If someone do really cares, then that someone should have stayed with the kids until the parents came back!

If you find something wrong and never corrected it, what's the difference. Don't get me wrong, the parents are "somewhat stupid" but unlesss you know the whole story, why judged them?

I doubt that in the UK one would face a prison sentence for leaving kids of that age in a mall late at night....its quite usual for kids of this age to be hanging around shopping centres parentless at that age in the UK, except in the UK they are probably drunk and high on glue......I doubt these were

yeah.. too sad. we do not know the whole story why the parents left them and maybe they have reasons, but for me it is too irresponsible to leave your children in the street in the middle of the night. its weird and absurd.

whew!!..

I hope nothing happened to them.

hapy, did u call the parents? did they picked the boys immediately? what a gross of negligence,grrrr...if i were the ones who saw them, i would call police and let the parents explain to the police the utter negligence and immaturity. (i hope the boys are properly clothed, the nights are still cold) grrrr...

1) This is an extreme CARELESSNESS from the parents part, i hope you informed the security/management to baby sit them or tried to call the parents etc...

2) Qatar is Masha'Allah by far the safest place to live in.

3) However, One should not take chances.

I wish they are safe and sound now...

It shows they have too much confidence on their kids for not moving away from the place they have asked to. Btw i wonder what would have made their parents to leave the kids alone & go to somewhere else.

oh that is horrible.. anything could have happened to them. Regardless of having a mobile phone the poor things probably wouldn't know who to call... and would their parents have answered anyway?

Yesterday, saw two boys at road outside villaggio past midnight all alone. When i came back after drawing some cash from ATM machine, carrefour had closed they were still there all alone. Apparently one had a mobile and i asked them where their parents were an dthey replied that they have gone somewhere and have asked them to wait here for a while. The kids were on the pavement along the main road.
