Packing....HELP ME :-(

Beela
By Beela

Hi,

Yes, that is a sad face you see!

I am having a hard time packing. I sorted my clothes into piles of fall/winter and spring/summer. I boxed up all my fall/winter things so they're out of the way.

I took my spring/summer stuff and made piles of pants (~ 10), skirts (~ 35), suits (3), blouses (~ 30)...well you get the idea. Yes, I know I can buy clothes in Doha, but if I already have it, why not bring it?

Anyway, when it comes to clothing, can you think of something you wish you hadn't brought with you or something you wish you had?

I've also heard that everywhere it's marble flooring so I guess I should bring some gel inserts for my feet, yes?

And do ladies wear pantyhose? In the heat, is it okay to be wearing a knee-length skirt and no pantyhose?

Last thought...I love my boots (brown pair and black pair), which are just below the knee, and I wear them with my shorter skirts. Do the fashionistas in Doha wear boots, or are people going to think I'm crazy? I should do a survey...what do you think?

Thanks and see you in a few weeks!!!

:-)

P.S. Anyone need/want anything from Canada?

The Cloud Nine I go to is on Lusail across from the Exhibition Center. Wonderful body scrubs, massages and a great hair colorist/stylist! And mineral make-up. I usually use Bare Escentuals (sic) but their's will do in a pinch (more expensive.)I think it's called "Glow."

Thanks for asking whether Jane Cosmetics is Jane Iredale and telling me about Cloud Nine!

No, it's not Jane Iredale.

This Jane Cosmetics is an acronym for Juniper, Aloe, Nettle & Elderflower and was associated with Estee Lauder. This is their more reasonably priced make-up line that is usually available in drug stores. I just love their eyeliner and bronzer. Great product at a reasonable price!

Thanks again.

RED_POPE,

Yes, I'm quite sure I'm still in Canada. I'm not sure who is this Gypsy?

Hmmm, attention by asking some innocent questions and talking about bare legs? ;-)

Yes, I've seen some comical sh!t on here!

Are you sure you are in Canada?

You sound very familiar, are you related in any form or shape to Gypsy? Are you her Cyborg girlfriend?

I think that you just want attention from every man in QL. I do question your intents.

But this forum is funny and a good scenario for comical shyt,..

Come out , Come out, Where ever you are!

Anyhow I enjoy it.

I'm not sure about carpet in the work place...however, from getting from one's car to one's desired location, you will probably have to walk on cobbled stone walkways and/or dirt roads because there is still a lot of construction around.

I'm thankful for my flannel shirts, pjs and long sleeve T's because it does get cool in the evenings and in these cement walled houses/apts. I find it colder in the house than outside! A warm robe would be delightful, as well.

The reason I mentioned make-up is because I use Jane cosmetics...I have not found that here. Last I looked, Roots did not carry it either.

Later.

Hi cynbob,

Sweaters are a fabulous idea, as you mentioned. I'll definitely bring a few. All my shoes are comfy when I walk on carpet! Are most work places carpeted? I hope so, but I will bring some insoles and gel inserts to be on the safe side. I packed away all my flannel pjs! Thank you for your suggestions!

It is midnight here!

Okay, here are my responses, instead of doing individual replies!

Colt45, I just got my Flamingo Pink laptop, have an ipod, and digital camera. I will make sure to bring all the right adapters so I can charge the batteries and stuff.

DaRuDe, I don’t come with a refund policy! ;-)

qatarisun, do women were boots when winter is on it’s way to spring? I am working for a Western company, and will wait to hear what DaRuDe has to suggest.

Loulsy, I’ll be wearing a jacket when I come, and will pack an extra (girl’s got to match things!). A couple of cardigans should do the trick, as well. I don’t have any skirts that are above the knee, so I won’t worry about that! I don’t normally care what others think; just don’t want to offend anyone!

ksarat16, if you seriously have a showcase, I’ll *try* to remember to bring you a little something, okay?

newkidontheblock, I’m in Calgary, and yes there are Roots stores everywhere. One of the most recognizable Canadian brands!

Leb-xpat, someone suggested I “vacuum pack” things, so hopefully all my stuff won’t come flying at me, knocking me out!

britexpat, you’re a man and can get away with a “few” clothes! I can’t!

notfromhere, interesting observation about how it’s mostly men commenting….I guess they shop a lot for women’s clothes and stuff?

I had the same problem a few months ago leaving from the US. Here is what I have learned.

1. Bring sweaters! I wear sweaters over t-shirts with jeans. They are easy to remove if it gets too warm and a delight to have when the AC is running full blast.

2. Definitely bring your boots. But, also pack some comfy shoes because often you will be walking on dirt roads.

3. Bring flannel pajamas, if you have them. I cannot believe the prices for these cotton flannel pjs here! It does get cool in the winter.

4. Don't bring all those skirts--like other women on this thread have stated- bring the more conservative length skirts with you.

5. Other items: if you have a favorite body lotion; toothpaste; make-up; soap; or other personal items--stock up and bring those. There is no guarantee that you will find them here.

6. Bring your favorite DVD's. They are priced higher here.

Lastly, have a safe trip!

Once you've seen me at the Toga Party..And i was wearing anything but black/white... so either you were too drunk and could see evrything around in black/white only, or.. go to doctor to consult regarding your memory issues, it's about a time i guess...

BTW i don't wear white at all, i am white enough by myself..

Beela,

1.you better do bring your clothes, as you will have a hard time to find anything here;

2. it is OK to wear a knee-length skirt and no pantyhose;

3. it is perfectly fine to wear your boots, as it's bloody cold in the winter here...I also love to wear my boots... but the "shorter skirts" you will mostly use for going out, like bars and pubs.. not during the day.

4. I don't think you will need all your 35 skirts. Bring some - the modest ones - for the office, and few-shoretr ones- for the night clubs...

5.I am not sure what company you are joining. If it's a Western Company, you can mostly keep your present clothes style at the office. If it's a qatari company, forget about open tops, you will need tops which are long sleevs, and close up to your neck ..

For more information please contact DaRuDe.. he is an expert in women's clothes, as well as in WOMEN in general..:)

Good Luck

Trust me.. ur singling out ur winter clothes, but do put in a jacket or two bcz when it gets cold.. its gets FREAKING COLD.. i mean i'm wearing boots! in winter they'll keep u warm enough... but then yeah it does get cold but so far i've always been in short sleeves with a small pullover or jacket on top.. so no worries..

in summer its very hot and humid outside but in the office its a "freezer" LOL...

U can wear pantyhouse, u can wear stockings, or u can wear nothing.. its as u wish.. there is no right or wrong..

Save ur skirts that are shorter than knee length for the nights u go out clubbing and trust me.. dont think of bringing with u a mini skirt.. even though there are those who wear them to pubs and clubs.. the comments u hear are not worth it trust me...

ur fine with whatever u mentioned.. just make sure u got the "right" clothes for ur job.. as for when ur out with friends.. sheesh .. jeans and a top will be mroe than fine.. whether u wear flipflops or boots, or ballerines, or sandals it wont matter bcz at the end ur gonna start caring about what makes u comfortable and not what ppl think..
