Owning a business in Qatar
By gregturnbull •
I understand you have to run a business here with a Qatari, with them owning 51 per cent of it. As I am buying a property here, with which I get residency, does anyone know whether this would enable me to run a business on my own, or is that only if you are a citizen?
unfortunatelly, the laws here are extremely expensive to purchase and therefore i cannot share a copy with you. This place is not like other countries whwre you find codes and laws on line and you can download them... this law is from 2006 and only now we got the english translation! it's crazy!
As for the 51%, it depends on your arrangement, meaning on paper everything has to be clear, however in practice this is dealt with in numerous manners.
I cannot say more cause it would be against my contract :)
Does the Qatari have to put up 51 per cent of the cost of setting up, and runing, the business then? Or do you have to GIVE them the 51 per cent?
Hi Lou,
You have 10 points on my book.. anyway, here's for a 100 points.. Can you share that commercial code here in the forum? A soft copy or a URL where we can read it would greatly help. What I heard of wasn't 51% but even as low as 5% for a Qatari. I mean not all businesses will eventually be successful and I doubt if a Qatari would allow himself to be 51% owner if a business venture goes sour with debts, etc.
Please advise..
Cheers.
for giving a legal opinion for free they could at least award me with more then 1 point :)
Residency doesn't help you for running a business on your own. you still have to have a Qatari partner with 51% of equity interest.
These are just rummors because of the new commercial code, which i finally got this morning on my computer :)), (feel like it's Christmas all over again!), but these things are not regulated by this law anyways, but they fall under another law dating from 2000.
