Only 27 months for abusing children

I am speechless. The sentence should have been a lot harsher.

Peter Clulow, 72, a former teacher at independent school Haberdashers' Aske's Boys School in Elstree, near Borehamwood, Herts, was jailed for 27 months.

He admitted five counts of indecent assault and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity - the charges related to three teenage boys. Clulow, of no fixed abode, also admitted 16 counts of possession of indecent images of children.

He left the school in 1985 after two boys made a tape recording of him abusing them and he was confronted with the evidence by the headmaster.

Despite being banned from working at any boys' school again by the Department of Education, no formal complaint was made to the police and he was still able to work as a private tutor.

The first charge related to a 16-year-old pupil in the school, who was not one of the original complainants but who came forward later.

Offences against the second victim, a 16-year-old, took place between 2000 and 2001 and then against the third, who was 15, in 2005.

The 15-year-old, now 18, was filmed by Clulow touching himself. He was in court to hear the sentencing.

"The main thing you wonder is what he had planned , what he aimed to get out of what happened. It could still be happening now. He could be doing it to other kids now. I don't think anyone should go through what I have done. Mine was not a high level of abuse but emotionally it's massive. I put my trust in someone who wanted my trust for other reasons," he said.

His mother added that she was angry Clulow had not originally been reported by the school in 1985.

"If they had reported it this wouldn't have happened to other victims including my son and I'm angry with the education authority for not stopping him teaching altogether," she said.

Judge Stephen Warner disqualified Clulow from working with children and ordered him to sign the sex offenders' register.

Brit in general your government has become too obsessed with political correctness. They need to realize that some people don't deserve any rights.

Personally I think they should be given life sentences and have their brains dissected and tests run for the purpose of figuring out why they're so messed up in the first place.

I would even vouch for no anesthetic if it makes people feel better.

men like him need to be castrated not imprisoned! i cant believe he got only 27 months!

I think that's unfair Brit, I'm a neo pinko, liberal, wishy washy do gooder and I would never give a pedophile this low of a sentence.

It's the neo pinko, liberal, wishy washy do gooders. The whole system has gone to the dogs :O(

The British system really needs some re-working. Is it because the cases are from so long ago you think?

It seems that since he has been on remand for a long period, he may not have to do any actual jail time..

Are you sure Brit. I don't know the UK prison system to well, but in the States & Canada 27 months gets you a medium to minimum security prison where there are no protected areas, hence why some of these guys end up in them with what seem to be light sentences.

By britexpat• 13 Jul 2010 14:05

sadly with our wishy washy system, he will be protected and probably kept away from other prisoners - for his own good :O(

Cos as a mother I can't imagine the agony those poor kids & their parents must go through.

Prison is a very very rough place for child abusers. He is a goner.

Fatimah a lot of times convictions like these are based on which jail the guy will go to. His punishment is better served in a medium security prison where he won't be protected from the other inmates.

Agree with you both. These UK laws on crime may seem all lenient but I hear the jails there can sure get rough & at this one foot in the grave age that the guy is its gotta be bad..serves the sicko just right!

and this is why majority of the messengers came to arab's region.

He won't survive prison. 27 months in most countries isn't enough to get you into a big fancy maximum security prison with protected cells for kiddie fiddlers, he'll be going to a medium security where he get's to be in general population with a bunch of guys who will make him wish he'd never been born.

Sometimes there is a method to the judges madness.

yes, if we set the pervert free, he will fit in perfectly with those who close their eyes to child rape and pretend nothing is going on, but beat their women for stepping out of the blue garbage bags.

child abuse!!!!

is it something new, or one of the routine file in Que???

May be one day we will hear a news for legalization.

Isnt there any shame left in british authorities. This guy should not have survived the detention, should have been pumped to death before trial.

By britexpat• 12 Jul 2010 23:51

Unfortunately, with EEC rules we can't bring in the death panelty for paedos and child abusers :O(

Set the pervert free, he will fight for Oppressed Muslim Women

Senile old judges along with a lack of prison places. The Tories complained about labour being soft on crime and now they are doing the same.

By anonymous• 12 Jul 2010 23:15

have certainly tried to liberate Muslim women from blue garbage bags

I hope he gets his comeuppance. What cheeses me off is the stupid sentence.

By nomerci• 12 Jul 2010 23:05

Fatimah, he most probably won't survive, they do not like kiddie fiddlers in prison.

By FathimaH• 12 Jul 2010 22:57

Agree with kbaisi. the sentence is just insane..However at 72 I wonder how he'll survive prison. Maybe soon he'll know what it feels to be a victim of sick abuses! Poor kids =(

I agree with you. The whole sentencing issue needs to be revisited.

The UK laws on crime are a big joke, way too lenient in my opinion. It's like every day I read about repeat offenders going on to commit more serious crimes...
