Online map of Doha.

Hey there, I just found this online map, it's new but looks excellent. Businesses can add details on it so if you spread the word chances are that it will become 'the' best map available here, and a very useful tool for all of us.

Pretty cool I think. :)

Moonbeam,

If you want to see the roundabout names, click on the Intersections checkbox from the Legend.

All personal markers are private and only viewable by the logged in user. This will change in the upcoming few weeks to allow you to publish your markers for everyone to see.

The legend will only accomodate the data that is there now. If you go to the search panel, you can find educational institutes by browsing the Categories.

Everything has it's place...that's why it looks uncluttered.

If anyone has any questions about the site, please use the contact page. I usually respond the same day.

Nice of you to stop in here on QL. :)

When you say "FYI: Updated/Detailed street imagery will go live by Sunday morning (click on the icon to switch to map view)." Do you mean that people logging in will be able to see tagged places and markers?

The problem with the wiki map is that you get a bunch of personal markers showing 'brian's house', 'ahmed's house' etc; which leads to a slightly messy map. I hope that this map will show landmark type places and service spots on the legend; such as : hospitals, educational institutions, roundabout names etc etc. That way it will become a useful tool to navigate Doha with.

Anyway, great job by the way! :)

Hi all,

I'm happy to hear that http://dohamap.info has been useful to some, maybe not so much to others.

More data is on the way but it takes time to get that stuff. If you're a business, putting your info on the map is as simple as filling out a form online. Someone will contact you shortly after. The process takes 1 day and the charge is nominal.

If you have any suggestions for new features or any feedack, please make yourself heard. The site is still new and is undergoing constant updates.

I see that sharing personal markers is high on the priority list for more than a few. There is a current effort to allow registered users to publish their maps.

FYI: Updated/Detailed street imagery will go live by Sunday morning (click on the icon to switch to map view).

>> sign in and click to remember your password. next time you'll be automatically signed in. if you find something from search, click it and in the info bubble click the link to add to your map. then your central repository will be your map (where all your places can be showing at the same time)

P.S. Yes, I am the site owner/creator :)

Definitely a bummer...I looked on the help/contact page of the new map, and it seems that businesses can send in their information to be put on the map, but that's it...I wonder if there is some way that QL could get them to be the "official" QL map and add places if people asked them to, even if the businesses haven't sent in their info? I'm sure there are many small restaurants/business offices who will not register their information, but that people would appreciate coming up on a search.

I've had a look at Dohamap, but the features are the same as before. You can't see all locations on the map at once, you have to log in and then physically add them to your map. Bit a bummer, but at least when someone searches for something it will generally turn up.

I still prefer Google earth...coz once a place is viewed, it will remain in the laptop and you can view it offline ...it helped me get a feel of Doha, when i arrived here..

I have been adding lots of well-known places first (roundabouts, fast food places with signs that people use for giving directions, etc.) I hope you all can see them! (or if not, we can find a way to make it so that everyone can see them and add to them) If everyone adds a few places, we should be able to have a very detailed map to link to QL

Moonbeam, If you do a QL search using the word "newton" you will find a number of other threads asking questions about the school...one of the people who replied on one of the threads will be a teacher there in the fall, so you may want to PM that user.

I heard some co-workers talking about potential schools for their children the other day, and from what I gleaned from the conversation, Newton has two locations - one near West Bay, and another somewhere near the D Ring Road. Maybe someone on one of the threads I mentioned above could help you further?

The school is at the round about that goes to the Intercontinental hotel. You can't miss it.

This new map is great, very easy to use, and yes, uncluttered by numerous people's houses (although marking compounds may be helpful b/c people use them to give directions).

I have logged on and started adding places, but I don't know if the places that I map show up when anyone else logs onto the site? If anyone logs on, let me know if places I have mapped show?

I think I'll have to call them. When I do find out where the are located, I'll update it on both maps. Thanks anyway for looking for me. :)

Yeah I know! I've marked my previous house, in English ofcourse, but can't get to remove it since I've moved from that place. LOL.

Wiki is better cos of more marked places and its got an easier search feature too.

Been Looking at Wikimapia, and yes it's better because more people have marked places. problem is that half of those places are witten in Arabic, and lots are actually homes.......... ;) Not very useful when you need to find a business.

The reason I think that this will become a useful tool particularly for newcomers is that it's dedicated to qatar and even shows areas. I think its very new so like a wiki project requires people to mark places they know. I was looking for the Newton International School but it hasn't been marked.

If anyone knows exactly where it is, can you add it please! :) Million thanx! :)

Nice one! Although it didn't bring up my company at all! Neither the plant nor the Doha office :(

You could also try http://www.wikimapia.org, I feel its much easier to mark any physical location on the world map, not just doha.

Thanks.
