One Day Digital Photography Course

timebandit
By timebandit

I am going to be putting a one day intensive digital photography course together very soon, if there is enough interest. Friday 19th of March is my favourite date at the moment. I believe I have a suitable venue, and will post back as soon as I have confirmed this.

There will be around 20 places available, and the course will be free of charge. You will preferably own a DSLR but the course will be open to owners of compact cameras as well, so long as they can take manual control of aperture and shutter speed. If there is no way of manually controlling your cameras settings, you will not be able to benefit from a lot of the subjects covered.

So.... who is interested?

The news is all bad I'm afraid. I am sorry to have got everyone's hopes up. But I am going to have to abandon this project. I will quickly explain that before starting this thread, I had been thinking of running this course for a while due to demand. It had been intimated to me that there was a venue I could use for such a thing, but I did not confirm before spontaneously announcing I was going to hold a one day course last Wednesday. Unfortunately the venue was not as accessible to me as I had first thought, and the search for a replacement has not gone well. I would have persevered in finding a replacement venue if it had not be for me receiving the bad news yesterday that due to restructuring my company will not be requiring my services past the end of this month. News that I was half expecting, but was hoping against the odds would not come.

Therefore I hope you will understand that I now very pressing issues to deal with, and venue hunting is not going to be one of them.

I really hope that someone else who is capable of stepping in and taking my place will do so. Demand has been proved by this thread, so if you are able to give instruction on photography please grab this thread and run with it.

Once again I apologise for raising people hopes.

Take care ya all

Today I followed up on what I thought was a good offer of a venue, and discovered the red tape is probably going to make it too difficult to achieve.

I am now desperately seeking a replacement. If anyone knows of something suitable, and bear in mind it must be free, please please please let me know ASAP.

TB, a word or two from someone who's done this before:

1. PHONES OFF!

2. Despite having a long list, people will not turn up and will not even have the courtesy to let you know.

3. Make sure everyone brings their manuals for their cameras, and that they have actually read the manual before turning up - one guy couldn't even turn his camera on!!!! I kid you not.

4. They will wonder why, after you have imparted all this knowledge, that they still take crappy shots. Unfortunately, being 'technically' competent does not make up for being artistically inept!

Good luck. You'll soon see why I said I'd never do free lessons again.

Hi Ram

Yup you really do have a good grasp of the basics. In your sideshow there was a bit of everything - macro, telephoto, angle shift, night photography and portrait. I was very impressed at your diverse thinking. You have looked for the not so obvious shot, and that is a quality that differentiates a photographer from someone who owns a camera.

Composition is a subject all on it's own, and requires the teaching of the rule of thirds. A rule that you must learn, but know when to break. I will try and hit on it momentarily on the 19th, but we will not have enough time to go into it in any depth.

Once someone has been shown the basics of photography, they must get their feet wet and make an effort to get out there with their camera. Just like you do not truly learn how to drive, until after you have passed your driving test, the more you use your camera the better you will become.

You should be very pleased with your shots Ram, I would be. And they are a good example of use of imagination. I love looking at photographs taken by others, and hopefully the course will create a lot more interest and give me many more images to scan through.

Happy clicking ya all

In fact i do know about the basics .. shutter speed, aperture and ISO .. depth of field also .. I have been practicing since along time .. i don't wanna say that i'm totally beginner .. but i would like to gain more techniques ..

in fact specially in composition .. I have learned that in photography composition is the most important thing..

I have seen amazing photos been taken with just mobile camera .. and it was cool cuz it tells a story ..

I guess i can help u too in sharing some of my information .. and i would love to learn from you too

Hummm... a lot of interest then. Good, no excellent, this confirms that one of these has been needed for a long time.

I just need to check my venue to see if they will agree to this, and we are in business most definitely.

The course will be around 4 or 5 hours long with a break somewhere in the middle. All you will need is your camera, and at around 100 shots worth of memory.

I am a bit busy at the moment, but later this evening I will put a list of those interested together, and may well have to close entries as I think the number is going up quickly.

Nic I have only just decided to put this together so there is nothing solid yet. But it is for anyone who has a camera and doesn't know how do drive it. Or perhaps for someone who would like to drive it a bit better.

ISO, aperture & shutter speed will probably be covered in the first instance to explain exposure.

Depth of field will probably follow.

Different techniques for portrait and landscape will probably be next.

Sport photography (or shall I say fast moving objects photography) will be covered.

And finally low light photography.

That will fill a day easily.

Remember this is free, so do not expect a super slick well put together course. But it could save a lot of people the pain of having to read books on the subject or find relevant videos on the web. You can't beat hands on training. And having been shown how to undertake tasks, everyone will then have the chance to try out what they have just been shown and corrected if they have it wrong.

More than that I cannot say at this point, because I have not put that much thought into it yet.

But if anyone would like a nudge in the right direction regarding photography, I am sure I can give them that.

By Nic• 24 Feb 2010 09:36

Welcome on board Ram ;)

If everything works out well with the venue it will be indoors with some outdoor work.

I need a projector and screen so indoors is a must for theory, but most of the practical will be outdoors.

Just in case my venue falls through, please keep your eyes open for a venue that would be prepared to give us free use of a conference room (or similar) which has a projector and screen ready for use.
