What the F***. I just cant believe. Poor Kids. Why doesnt the nation where this picture come do something for dem. The government there is the worst govt of all. They just want to make their pocket bulge how they bulge their hmmmm.....What is UN doing in Geneva? Cant they see all these.
In no way am I condoning war, and as you pointed out the impacts of the west's colonization is still evident today. I'm also not in total disagreement on that point, however the Iraqis, Persians, Egyptians, Mongolians, Japanese etc. once had their time of war and killing of innocent people. It's not a trait specific to one country or another, one region or another, or even one religion or another but a trait of certain humans who find it necessary to push their beliefs or expand their power and wealth. It's just how mankind is and in no way should reflect the ideas or beliefs of people who happen to be under that leader's unfortunate guidence. If the few were as peacful and content as the majority what a beautiful world we'd live in.
Ask him if it was not for the US and UK, where would he be right now? Not certainly typing on his computer inside his luxury air-conditioned home!
Ask him also, what glorious past his nation has and how much it has contributed for the world's development.
Don't bother to argue with one sighted ignorant and narrow malicious anti-western views. No matter what you will say the west is always bad and the religious extremists always right.
Look at some pictures of the US back at the turn of last century. The cities were terribly polluted. Education is the most important ingredient in my opinion, however you can only lead a horse to water you can not make them drink. No?
African resources and wealth have been the objective of colonial powers for centuries, you cannot eleminiate the effects of Frnace, UK, US and other colonial governments on those countries! who screwed up everything!
as i said earlier, you either become dependent and full up or independent and criminal who must be brought to justice! This is the logic of colonialists!
are you in your mind contributing hunger only to people who have many kids!
You are right saying to imply that westernization spread faster at material levels than mentalities and that is why waste was there but not seen as an issue. The results of that unbalanced growth, is illustrated in these pictures. The whole world is to blame for the mess we are in but the developed countries have a bigger share of that blame.
China was not the best example of careless policies as in spite of their darker past, they have been quite active in the recent years. In some areas (production of electrical cars), they have been more proactive than the US itself.
As for the Chinese habit of shopping for fresh food for each meal, it’s a cultural thing that, for the well being of the planet, has not yet gone away. Even in the modern and westernized Hong Kong, people still maintain that healthy and environmental friendly habit.
Waste management is definitely a huge problem all over the world but a more visible one in developing nations.
Children starving and deprived of education is also something the world should not close their eyes to;
" ROME: The number of hungry in the world has reached a "historic high" of more than one billion people, the UN food agency said yesterday, blaming the global financial crisis for the surge.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said "one sixth of humanity", or 1.02bn people, do not get enough to eat. It predicted an 11 per cent increase for all of 2009.
An estimated 642 million of the total are in the Asia-Pacific region, the agency said. Some 265m are in sub-Saharan Africa, 53m in Latin America and the Caribbean and 52m in the Middle East and north Africa.
But the FAO said there are some 15m hungry in developed countries.
A dangerous mix of the global economic slowdown combined with stubbornly high food prices in many countries has pushed some 100m more people than last year into chronic hunger and poverty, FAO chief Jacques Diouf said.
He called for a "new world food order" enshrining the "right to food and thus the right to exist", urging stepped-up investment in agriculture.
The FAO had initially revised downward its estimate of hungry people from 963m to 915m because of a "better-than-expected global food supply".
The new revised UN model would certainly define that.
All UN failures were due to its current model. Humanity is intelligent enough to come up with a more fare, efficient role in combating human sufferance provoked by humans.
We are certainly not the ones to define that UN here, but many of you have given some hints. Brit has suggested more efficient UN agencies and you pinpointed other good ideas.
I am quite positive if a commission is established to review UN’s current role in the world, something new will come out and hopefully something more meaningful than what the world has today.
I see no need to close our eyes to the hope of better models, assuming that what we have today is the absolute only possibility.
We obviously need a global paradigm change, to allow the UN to dare to go where they haven’t been before.
We don’t need to answer that question here because we are not the right ones to do so. It will obviously take a lot of thinking from qualified and experienced folks from all over the world – a UN commission in charge of reinventing themselves, taking into account their failures and future goals, aiming for a better distribution of resources to stop the pictures we see in this post.
Its all about evolution, education and learning.. The focus for China has been accelerated growth. Now it will start looking at the eco systems and infrastructure.
Most of the developed nations went through the same phase.
U are correct, only a few of the pictures are of China. I was not accusing, but just give reasons why these things happen. In developing countries when things move so quickly there are not laws in place to prevent this kind of situation. What I was explaining is a fact of how people think there and what the situation is. This is the reason for having so much trash around. There are no systems and society it self has never had to deal with plastic bottles or bags or wrappers until ten years ago. Until 15-20 years ago no one in China even had a refridgerator so what they did was just go to the local market get get fresh food everyday and compost the remains. In the country sides of certain countries they probably don't even understand that plastic doesn't disolve. The government won't do anything because they are busy making money and being corrupt. Obviously in a place like China there is no foreign intervention from any organization.
According to a recent estimate, hungry people nowadays ar at or about 1 billion..
since this thread was posted, in excess of 300 hundred lives have ben wasted due to hunger and poverty. more than commentators on this thread.
I believe it is in the interest of certain nations to keep certain nations either "dependent and alive" or "free and starving". Wars and conflicts, unfortunately, are required to break this reliable design.
However, this should not stop us from trying to improve the problem in anyway we can. Given some earlier posts, i have lost hope in almost every charitable organisation around the globe and if they are sincere, they are not effective.
Luistanio I understand the need for it to be reengineered, but the question keeps coming back to How?? so the UN votes to allow itself into soverign nations, so who's going to stop all those AID workers from getting slaughtered when they try to enter? What if the government of that nation say no, send one person in and all kill them? What then?
that is why some conflicts arise in the world - miscommunication!
I clarify:
reengineered by UN itself: assess the world we live in today, assess the human sufferance and reengineer it in order to aim eradication of human abuses caused by human.
maybe, just maybe, this new reengineered UN will have the authority to go into sovereign nations in certain cases... I am sure, if man kind were intelligent enough to create the UN, they are also intelligent to improve it.
Now your 2nd comment. I wasn't paraphrasing you at all, let me explain it to you:
My sentence has 2 parts:
the 1st part I am agreeing with your previous post when I say "you are right".
The 2nd part of my sentence is my own addition, I am being sarcastic adding that the fact that it is convenient for certain nations to keep people poor and ignorant so they can be used (labor) for the foundations (to build) of the wealthy world.
I hope it’s clear now, that I had no intentions to misuse your valuable input.
because they are completely and utterly incapable of looking after themselves....
a) Moral reasons = the innocent suffer
b) Selfish reasons = all sorts of crap can happen that will eventually hurt the rest of us
No its not fair having to clean up the mess of others but sometimes better to do it to stop it getting a whole lot worse
There are some leaders i could safely thwack with my flip flop..... but due to the ignorance of the citizens its the very people that these corrupt leaders hurt that actually support them
The only thing that can reasonably help the UN is to have the complete backing of all the important nations in the world, ie: the US, China, Russia & the UK. Really, unless the US backs the UN totally they're just a body with no power. They need the US muscle behind them.
The point I'm trying to make lusitano is that in today's world there IS no other solution. The UN cannot enter a soverign country without an invite or it's seen as invasion. They can request a despot to be delivered to the Hague, but unless he volunteers they can't make him go without force. There's simply no way to make the UN more effective.
I didn't say army, what i said was it needs a lot of thinking by a lot of competent and qualified people, in order to come out with a more efficient UN.
Weapons and violence are definitely not the solution...
Gypsy if you read the autobiography of your great countryman General Dallaire.... the reason why the UN wasn't in Rwanda in any great numbers wasn't to do with sovereign nation.
a) they were busy in ex-yogoslavia
b) no-body wanted to be humiliated again after black hawk down
c) its africa so it aint worth it and wouldn't commit
Otherwise exactly right...the UN Can NOT go in unless the nation has asked for that and then the remit is very narrow so the soldiers often have to stand by and watch heinous things happen and have limited effect.
"I always wonder why labor camps in the wealthy ME countries have to be equal to slums in countries where poverty is a 'fact of life', while there is absolutely no need for this here."
...the reason is: to keep the grass green on their side of the desert.
It's a good question but to review the UN roles and responsibilities and to equip them with the adequate tools, would take much more than just my insignificant answer in this post.
if human kind is able to step on the moon, I am sure we would be able to come out with a new revised UN, more adequate and efficient in tackling today's world's problems including man-made atrocities ... I believe.
This looks like India/Nepal to me as one picture shows Indian-looking kids, but the female shows a bit more Nepali features.
Either way, horrible circumstances to live in.
I have been in slums in
- Manila
- Bombay
- Johannesburg
- Colombo
I always wonder why labor camps in the wealthy ME countries have to be equal to slums in countries where poverty is a 'fact of life', while there is absolutely no need for this here.
Most definately in China. In China there are no such rules establish for throwing trash around. There are street sweepers who come each morning but are not very thorough. The citizens of China do not see littering as a problem, at least not their problem as an individual but the street sweepers problem. The photo is probably of an extreme situation and who knows, by one of the photos it looks like they are using the water to transport the plastic sort of like logging. China is growing too quickly and with the population and lack of laws to protect the environment and enforcement of those laws, this is what you get.
If my country is free of these corrupted politicians , we will live a better life. But I do not know when do we stop electing these corrupt politicians .Also , if we dig the so called "Black" money we can build a better nation.
I was not referring to the existent UN, but to a "more active and meaningful UN", empowered to manage and distribute resources to the world's population in a more controlled and fare manner...
I know it sounds utopic but if thoughts were given, perhaps we could at least remove the excuses to witness so much misery living side by side in the same planet with so much wealth.
How do you expect to get the UN there to do that? The UN can't simply waltz into a soverign country without the permission of the governing body or bodies of that country. Hence why you don't find them in any great force in Zimbabwe, Somalia or Rwanda.
And it isn't an unbalanced distribution of these resources. This region of the world has the fewest natural resources available, yet Africa has some of the most arable farm land in the world. The problem is that corrupt governments don't allow it to be probably utlizied.
sorry to correct you but, I was not thinking of giving the money to the corrupt governments. I was thinking of it being managed by a "more active and meaningful UN", to provide these children with access to education and a more dignifying life, so they could contribute to the progress of they own countries, once they grow up.
As for the keeping the green grass in the desert, do you have an idea of how much does it cost to keep a square feet of green grass in countries like Qatar and UAE?
Not to mention how damaging it is for the environment to produce that water in these countries, putting them on the top of the CO2 producers List...
The planet provides enough resources to allow all to live with dignity, the unbalanced distribution of those resources causes the disgraces we see... that is why I question if a global management of the world resources wouldn’t be more fare?!
We can complain about keeping green grass in a desert climate, but even if you did give all the money that goes into it to releving poverty it wouldn't go into the hands of these children, it would go to the corrupt governments, warlords, etc, who would blow it on their own needs and nothing would change.
The answer lies, unfortuantely, in ridding these countries of these corrupt governments and warlords, and seeing how much "praise" had gone to the US & UN in the past for doing that I don't see why anyone should bother.
I totally agree with you. Maintaining green grass in desert countries was just an example of waste of resources in vain, instead of investing these resources in helping millions of needed children, as shown in the pictures you posted!
I just wonder, how can people display wealth in extravagant ways and are able to face the world as if the entire world were rich like them... totally neglecting these children... and this goes for the petro governments as well as the Hollywood and Bollywood so called stars and others alike...
How can they flash wealth in public and not feel or show a bit of remorse????!!
It has to be something worse than blindness and ignorance!!!
And how can the world (specially the Media) endorse all the wealth and glamour without connecting this wealth and glamour to the reality shown in these pictures??!!
it hearts to see the waste of food and sorry to repeat my self but it hearts too, to see about how much is wasted to maintain the green in the desert, considering that we live in a planet where these photos were taken!
My appology plzz. You said "contribution in economy" but still dear Destroying Food is still unacceptable excuse. Why Food??? There can be thousands of other means to contribute in economy rather than destroying food items which already getting less day by day as U.N. is claiming for the past few years.
Vic- it could be from anywhere in asia... i think the first pic is from the Philippines.
But it's just a glimpse of the real poverty that these people are so deeply in... some make a living by collecting leftovers from various restaurants or garbages which they wash, cook and sell in they're neighborhood...
lol... I am amused to see how much Wikipedia and internet in general has sometimes replaced genuine knowledge.
Nowadays, a lot of people seem to know a lot about everything without spending too much time studying it or ever visited or lived in the places that they master!
Incredible cyber wisdom!
and by the bay, where did I say that "charity work is being done for this festival"?
the tomatoes used are sold to the festival's organization, who then makes a profit with the festival itself.
they are using the tomatoes (over-riped) to contribute to the economy (and they need it badly at the moment).
Here in the Gulf, the money used to maintain the golf courts green, could buy tones and tones of food, pay for the education of millions of these children and even maintain those green golf courts in those poor nations, which are already naturally green, with the additional benefit of employing lots of local people in their native countries.
PS. I am not defending waste of food, what I am trying to do is to call the attention to the hypocrisy publicly endorsed by governments and public figures like Tiger Woods.
You are right, but the cost of the tomatoes used in that festival wouldn't pay for a single day of irrigation of any golf course in the desert climates.
it just that natural resources are “property” of the planet Earth and therefore I believe it would be more fare to the planet and its inhabitants, if the profit would be shared with all, aka the role of a more active and meaningful UN.
Don't you think it’s a damn waste of money and damaging for the global environment, to maintain green fields in desertic climates? Wouldn't Tiger Woods’ money (as an example) be better employed in helping these developing countries (like Cambodia, as an example), instead of watering grass in the desert for the sake of playing golf??
I know it’s a very simplistic and utopic approach, but until the world doesn't realize this, we will always have these poor children suffering to the expenses of the Lamborghinis parked outside of the green fields in the desert paid by petrol dollars!
I agree with you on U.N. issue but i think putting responsibility on one ORGANIZATION's shoulder might not work. We all know how U.N. is working in so many countries and handling so many problems in each country
.
My belief is that persons living in each country must initiate steps to help their respective govts to tackel common problems/issues of their home country. Like giving DONATIONS,POINTING OUT MAJOR PROBLEMS IN THEIR COUNTRY, HELPING GOVT TO ELIMINATE CORRUPTION,POVERTY etc. It is the responsibility of every human being to make their surroundings suitable for living freely and with standardized HYGENIC LEVELS
Most of these people are from developing nations, where the governments are either too poor or rife with corruption. sadly too, many are just so used to this "life" that they do not see anything better..
I personaly believe that the answer lies with the U.N
It should come up with constructive models for alleiviating the suffering of these people and ensure that the funding comes from donor nations from the developed world.
This reminds us to be Vigilant in our surroundings. We must be responsible enough on things we do specially on our waste.. We must start cleaning through ourselves. The people who suffers on this things will be us at the end. It gonna comes back to us.....
have we all forgotten YEARLY TOMATO fight FESTIVAL in "SPAIN" where thousands of TONS of tomato is drained by throwing them on each other. WHAT A WASTE OF FOOD,TIME & MONEY.
to see such a thing, but some does not really have the ability to change it. No one would choose to live like that, but life is stronger than me, you and all.
Thank god that we are living in a healthy environment, eating good food, sleeping in clean beds and having very good facilities to live.
Another thing is, try to change yourself for what is better while you can. Some people got no choice to do that, but you still have so do it while you can.
You just don't know when would god choose you to be put under a test that you may not pass ...

Lusitano,
my views are based on lives wasted not religious recommendations.
Stop talking about past please because Mr Paul himself admitted the guilty past.
no wars have been significant enough to be called World Wars but those originating in West. Facts not religious studies!
Mr Paul,

Mr. Paul,
Many Iraqis died as a result of the sanction imposed on Iraq let alone poverty cause by war. all of this is based on lies from UK and US!
should not they be blamed!
and where the did the global economy crisis originate??

A lot of these countries have families with lots of kids,so why should other countries be asked to feed them.
Simply this, DON'T have 8 or 9 kids if yer cant afford to feed, clothe them etc.
Take responsibility for yer own actions before yer demand handouts from others.

sure it needs more professional soldiers blah blah
but it will come back point that Gypsy made...
UN can't go into a sovereign nation.
And Lusitano your paraphrasing of my points is not correct
I did NOT say 'can be used for the foundations of the wealthy world...'
Alexa,
maybe because pictures like this can be taken in those countries.... just maybe
Gypsy,
Again, that is a fact with the current UN model, which to the eyes of the world it no longer serves its purpose - it needs to be reengineered!

brit,
that is sure a sad fact!
how could certain countries develop, if not from the exploitation of the poor and illiterate!
Gypsy,
all that is correct, with the current UN model.
All I am saying is that model does not serve its purpose. It needs to be revisited and revised.
Everything is possible; changes and eventual improvements come from challenging the establishment!
Yep it was it was begged in but had a very restricted mandate, some totally useless untrained contingencies, no support.
Yep they are still there
one day read romeo dallaire's book or at least watch Ghosts of Rwanda on you tube
'The UN cannot enter a soverign country without an invite or it's seen as invasion.' spot on - that is the bottom line
OK.. How did we get into despots and arming the U.N ?
If the major powers have the will, then the various U.N agencies can be used to alleviate the suffering of the poor.
The sad fact is that for many leaders, it is in their best interests to keep the people poor and illiterate :(
The point I'm trying to make lusitano is that in today's world there IS no other solution. The UN cannot enter a soverign country without an invite or it's seen as invasion. They can request a despot to be delivered to the Hague, but unless he volunteers they can't make him go without force. There's simply no way to make the UN more effective.
Gypsy,
I didn't say army, what i said was it needs a lot of thinking by a lot of competent and qualified people, in order to come out with a more efficient UN.
Weapons and violence are definitely not the solution...
But the UN WAS invited into Rwanda? I don't believe they are there now are they?
Gypsy if you read the autobiography of your great countryman General Dallaire.... the reason why the UN wasn't in Rwanda in any great numbers wasn't to do with sovereign nation.
a) they were busy in ex-yogoslavia
b) no-body wanted to be humiliated again after black hawk down
c) its africa so it aint worth it and wouldn't commit
Otherwise exactly right...the UN Can NOT go in unless the nation has asked for that and then the remit is very narrow so the soldiers often have to stand by and watch heinous things happen and have limited effect.
The Dude,
to answer your question:
"I always wonder why labor camps in the wealthy ME countries have to be equal to slums in countries where poverty is a 'fact of life', while there is absolutely no need for this here."
...the reason is: to keep the grass green on their side of the desert.
I think that by arming the UN you will create more atrocities then prevent.
Gypsy,
It's a good question but to review the UN roles and responsibilities and to equip them with the adequate tools, would take much more than just my insignificant answer in this post.
if human kind is able to step on the moon, I am sure we would be able to come out with a new revised UN, more adequate and efficient in tackling today's world's problems including man-made atrocities ... I believe.
This looks like India/Nepal to me as one picture shows Indian-looking kids, but the female shows a bit more Nepali features.
Either way, horrible circumstances to live in.
I have been in slums in
- Manila
- Bombay
- Johannesburg
- Colombo
I always wonder why labor camps in the wealthy ME countries have to be equal to slums in countries where poverty is a 'fact of life', while there is absolutely no need for this here.
jhort,
I wouldn't be so quick in taking general conclusions, as at least some of the pictures were not taken in China.
the point is not accusing a particular nation of polluting because all nations are guilty, being the developed world the guiltiest.
the point here is how could our wealthy planet coexist with such levels of poverty??
How are they going to audit and bring to punishment soverign countries? The only way to do this is with a military.
China is growing too quickly and with the population and lack of laws to protect the environment and enforcement of those laws, this is what you get.
repeated
If my country is free of these corrupted politicians , we will live a better life. But I do not know when do we stop electing these corrupt politicians .Also , if we dig the so called "Black" money we can build a better nation.
I agree that it is not easy..
However, the U.N, rather than carrying out Peacekeeping roles (which have no real value) should use its various bodies like:
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) or
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) or
World Health Organization (WHO)
to cordinate and faclitate improvement programs within the developing nations.
certainly a different UN, one that could audit and make governments accountable for the corruption and abuse of their own people.
it is clear that the current UN does not serve its purpose!
So you're arguing for an armed UN, since that's the only way they will be able to bring Aid to these countries?
Gypsy,
I was not referring to the existent UN, but to a "more active and meaningful UN", empowered to manage and distribute resources to the world's population in a more controlled and fare manner...
Gipsy,
sorry to correct you but, I was not thinking of giving the money to the corrupt governments.
---------------------------------------------------------
I think you have me confused with someone who gives a sh1t.
We can complain about keeping green grass in a desert climate, but even if you did give all the money that goes into it to releving poverty it wouldn't go into the hands of these children, it would go to the corrupt governments, warlords, etc, who would blow it on their own needs and nothing would change.
The answer lies, unfortuantely, in ridding these countries of these corrupt governments and warlords, and seeing how much "praise" had gone to the US & UN in the past for doing that I don't see why anyone should bother.
brit was probably referring to a more active and meaningful UN... not the one we all know.
The UN tried to help during the Bosnian war of the mid nineties, and all they got for their troubles were all the factions shooting at them...
---------------------------------------------------------
I think you have me confused with someone who gives a sh1t.
atif,
I totally agree with you.
But in many numerous things GCC govt spend alot of useless sectors just to showoff their wealth & standards to attract Int'l attentioni & business
atif,
apologies accepted and I do agree with you.
it hearts to see the waste of food and sorry to repeat my self but it hearts too, to see about how much is wasted to maintain the green in the desert, considering that we live in a planet where these photos were taken!
SF .......well i can see my brothers and sisters there too...lol.
Aana free, jaana free,
Pakde gaye tho khana free.
But it's just a glimpse of the real poverty that these people are so deeply in... some make a living by collecting leftovers from various restaurants or garbages which they wash, cook and sell in they're neighborhood...
very sad , to say the least
artif,
lol... I am amused to see how much Wikipedia and internet in general has sometimes replaced genuine knowledge.
Nowadays, a lot of people seem to know a lot about everything without spending too much time studying it or ever visited or lived in the places that they master!
Incredible cyber wisdom!
and by the bay, where did I say that "charity work is being done for this festival"?
see this link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato_fight
[OFFICIAL SITE]http://www.tomatina.es/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=65
.
As nothing been written that some charity work is being done for this festival.[JUST FOR UR INFO]
atif,
the tomatoes used are sold to the festival's organization, who then makes a profit with the festival itself.
they are using the tomatoes (over-riped) to contribute to the economy (and they need it badly at the moment).
Here in the Gulf, the money used to maintain the golf courts green, could buy tones and tones of food, pay for the education of millions of these children and even maintain those green golf courts in those poor nations, which are already naturally green, with the additional benefit of employing lots of local people in their native countries.
PS. I am not defending waste of food, what I am trying to do is to call the attention to the hypocrisy publicly endorsed by governments and public figures like Tiger Woods.
seems from China, Indonesia or Thailand....
Alhamdulillah, we are zillions time better off and in position to make some efforts to provide helping hands!
first of all people should dispose of their trash in a responsible manner
second wide availability of primary health care for women and children would help a lot too
sustainable development - even the richest governments would have big trouble keeping up with some of these population growths
just mentioning it to our readers that such festivals are totally useless by all means
.
You are right about GOLF but atleast no food is used to make it GREEN but in such festivals food is being destroyed in great quantity.
atif242,
You are right, but the cost of the tomatoes used in that festival wouldn't pay for a single day of irrigation of any golf course in the desert climates.
britexpat,
it just that natural resources are “property” of the planet Earth and therefore I believe it would be more fare to the planet and its inhabitants, if the profit would be shared with all, aka the role of a more active and meaningful UN.
Rather a simplistic approach , but uworkable..

The money that is wasted in maintaining artificially green in deserts could help millions others who starve in the natural green!
Yes, all of a sudden, I am extremely grateful for all I have!
Terrible pics!
Whatever you vividly imagine, Ardently desire, Sincerely believe and Enthusiastically act upon, Must inevitably come to pass.
to see such a thing, but some does not really have the ability to change it.
