The Office (UK or US)

I'm a big fan of the UK Version, and was totally confused after watching the US version!

Does anyone find the US version funny?

...or like me, find it completely crap, and a sacrilege to the UK version!

Any yankees find it funny?

It's funny you posted this about the office, just yesterday I went and got the complete first two seasons on DVD! I just started watching it a couple of days a ago online and really loved it. :D

lol Weasel - nice link, but I think any true Cockneys on here (do we have any?) would be quick to point out that that isn't Cockney slang.

I like the US version.

When The Office came out in England, it was a comedy revolution - tucked away on BBC2 late on a Tuesday night, no-one knew about it until the first repeat of the series; and so many people thought it was a genuine documentary. The relationships are so well-developed, I dont think it won 60+ awards for nothing.

I watched it yesterday, its crap! Its plain UK humour that just doesnt work with American actors!

USA version has grown on me but the UK version is much better. The USA version always looks confused and not sure what type of comedy it wants to be. The UK version of the Office is hard to watch but very funny.

The Daily Show is funny...but that’s only because of John Oliver!!! I watched the USA version of Coupling recently....it was awful.

but I still know that Elvis started to make Rock n Roll popular in the 50s and that Youngman, Bruce and Prior revolutionized comedy in the 60s. Its history man! We don't have that much of it but some it is very good.

The Office UK is the original one, and the best IMHO. You have to watch it first, before you try the US version. If you don't understand any of the cockney slang, don't worry, it's all explained here on their website :-)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/interview/gervais_explains.shtml

The US one is equally good too. You might want to give up after watching the first 2 eps, but don't. It heads off in a different direction and you'll stop comparing the 2 after a few episodes. It's run a full four seasons and gotten better with each episode. Too bad they've stopped due to financial constraints. I think the last episode was a web only release (webisodes??)

Henny Youngman, Richard Prior. These guys back in the 60's were breaking the mould and redefining comedy when the Brits were still chortling at Charlie Chaplin.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

Didn't anyone see the movie "Team America"? What about Seinfeld? I think Americans and Canadians have a different type of humor to the Brits but we can still appreciate their humor. Also, the list of very funny American comedians is a very long one.

Personally, I found the UK Office was very clever but it was painful to watch. It wasn't funny in the sense that you actually burst out laughing. It was cringe makingly funny in the sense that as ridiculous as Gervais's character was, you would see something of yourself in him. That was very clever.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

...of daily laughter!

You may be right, all things considered he did quite well, as everyone else pulled their shows while he kept going!

clearly not as funny during the strike but all things considered he did a good job.

he has many holes to fill during that time.

...but did you see the show during the scriptwriter's strike?

I felt bad for him!

By Withnail• 4 Sep 2008 17:16

the script writers are hilarious but i think jon is too. he is one of the writers.

and his delivery is priceless.

...and in my eyes the best!

I didn't see the later US versions when they did their own episodes, I supposed it may have got better.

I have to say, I find The Daily Show hilarious, however not so funny when they lost their script writers during the strike!

Hence, it's the script writers that are funny and not Jon Stewart.

The Script Writers of course are British! :-P

Funnily enough, I also cringe at Ricky Gervais and his deadpan look, but I prefer the British version. The American one sometimes comes across as a litlle contrived..

Yes, the UK one is far more cringe-inducing!

You definitely have to watch a few of the US episodes to get into. It really came into it's own when they started creating their own episodes rather than working from the originals.

If you like Ricky Gervais try and download some of his podcasts. Very funny.

If I have to be honest, I think I prefer the US, in the fact that I had a really hard time watching the UK one because Ricky Gervais MADE me feel embarrassed for him and I'd actually end up cringing and having to turn it off.

Americans are prudes. My college-age daughter was so offended by the UK episode which included an inflatable male body part, she won't watch the UK episodes anymore, lol!

i loved the british version and wasn't pleased when i heard the US was remaking it.

didn't like it at first either, but now i do. if you haven't watched a few episodes give it a bit more time.
