No Marriage license for interracial couple!

There are still bigots all over the world !

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- A justice of the peace in Louisiana who has drawn widespread criticism for refusing to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple says he has no regrets about his decision.

Keith Bardwell says he has no regrets for denying a marriage license to an interracial couple.

"It's kind of hard to apologize for something that you really and truly feel down in your heart you haven't done wrong," Keith Bardwell told CNN affiliate WAFB on Saturday.

Bardwell, a justice of the peace for Tangipahoa Parish's 8th Ward, refused to issue a marriage license to Beth Humphrey, 30, and her boyfriend, Terence McKay, 32, both of Hammond.

Bardwell's actions have elicited reactions from some top officials, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who called for Bardwell's dismissal.

"This is a clear violation of constitutional rights and federal and state law. ... disciplinary action should be taken immediately -- including the revoking of his license," the Republican governor said Friday.

Bardwell has not returned repeated calls from CNN this week. But he told Hammond's Daily Star in a story Thursday that he did not marry the couple because he was concerned for the children who might be born of the relationship and that, in his experience, most interracial marriages don't last.

Sadly, there are still too many bigots around. This case stands out because this Judge used his own personal views / beliefs to rule on a legal matter.

Anyway, the good news is that another judge issued the marriage license and they got married..

Brit, perhaps Bardwell was looking for these words... "its a crime against nature for a black man to have a sexual relationship with a white woman". I thought of your thread when I read this: http://edition.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/10/19/boxer.pardon/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

they laid a trap, a legal and mediatised one, for him. he knew it, tried to avoid it, but they insisted:

1- there's a lot of justicers around that will do the procedure, no questions asked

2- when the couple first came his wife intercepted them, telling them he's not available now, that her husband won't do it, and that there's plenty other justicers that would. still they came back later.

3- his position on the issue was well known since long time. why then he was chosen?

don't get me wrong please.

i'm not with what he did at all.

and the reasons he gave are as bad as the racist act of refusing to marry them.

all i am saying is

1- can he legaly refuse?

2- the whole matter is fishy!

can he legaly refuse? can he legaly improvise?

Is there a higher authority that can overule his decision and annhilate a contract where he crossed the line (like marrying incest, same sex, underaged...)?

go ahead and impale him.

however i was thinking: what if gay marriage was legalised, and out of conviction the justice ofthe peace refused to marry same sex people. would all the obove comments hold?

racist issues are totally different than religious ones. but would u marry same sex people or resign in protest?

it's about how much "manoeuvre margin" the constitution grants the justice of the law. can he legaly refuse or is he failing to assume his duty?

Why doesnt he just say what he really thinks? That his race should be cleansed of all impurities. Im sorry if that sounds harsh, but Im just stating the obvious.

Back home we call biracial kids pointies...(half caste or 0.5) and there is some friction between them and those who are darker skinned but that issue has and will always be around. I dont see them protesting to be wiped off the face of the earth.

As per The Telegraph..

"Mr Bardwell said that, after discussing the topic with blacks and whites, he concluded that most of society did not readily accept offspring of such relationships.

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," he said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it.""

It seems that the Judge has the power to not only interpret the law, but allow his personal experience / biases to "cloud" his judgement.
