I havent tried it.. but flashing is one method if you want to upgraded to higher firmware version. or using restore CD came with your phone... no cost involved, but yes if wrongly flashed, the the cost is your phone, so be careful.

The latest Official FirmWare (OFW) release via itunes is version 3.1.2. Please be carefull to update or to restore your iphone from Itunes

For all who has jailbroken and unlocked iphone, Please read this message:

3G and 3GS: Do not Update or Restore your units via iTunes. It will update your basband (modem firmware) to ver. 5.11 (which is unlockable for the momment)

if you want to see your baseband version go to settings> general> about> and see the version of your modem firmware ==> it should be 4.26.08 only

Once your modem firmware is 5.11.xx, your 3G and 3GS is unlockable.

2G: If by mistake you update or restore your unit via iTunes, you are very lucky!!! Still your phone will loss unlock and jailbreak but it can be fix.

The reason is very simple: the baseband of 2G is not upgradable with 5.11 version. It will remain ver04.xx.xx

I hope this answer will help others to stop updating your iphone from itunes. PM for more detail

you can upload to version 3.1 without upgrading the bootloader. the way is to save SCHP file before upgrade. there by preserve the bootloader and upgrade the firmware alone.

Instructions are below:

1) Backup/Sync your iPhone with iTunes.

2) Restore the iPhone to firmware 2.2 in iTunes

3) Exit iTunes - do NOT restore a backup of your iPhone!

4) Use Quickpwn to activate and jailbreak the iPhone 3g

5) Set up wifi

6) Update Cydia (cydia and 5 other apps need updating)

7) Rebooted the iPhone 3G

Turned off 3G and data roaming

9) Add http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com repo to cydia

10) Install Yellowsn0w 0.9.5 (or latest version)

11) Exit Cydia

12) Go to settings and reset network settings (phone soft reboots)

13) After reboot, wait about 2 mins

14) Remove your sim card from the iPhone 3G, wait about 10-20 seconds and reinsert it (some people have success just toggling Airplane mode on and off) - (you may not need to do this with Yelllowsn0w 0.9.6now available)

a new patch has been released by apple. so if you upgrade through itunes, not custom ipsw could be installed for jailbreaking. moreover its worth a wait in the OS 3.0, as there is already quite some issues like battery getting dried quickly and hanging/freezing issues. so unless you definitely need to upgrade, i would suggest to wait a little longer.. just a suggestion..

one is to downgrade your firmware and modem firmware too (now possible) provided the band isnt newest.

Alternative, you may purchase a turbo sim for 150 (or less) from any shop in souq, but check if its working in the shop.

kikano21, sorry to hear you have upgraded to version OS 3.0 accidentally. since you report your iphone no longer works, it isnt a factory unlocked version then. so you need to wait for the software unlocking tool and jailbreak your phone.

you may also check for the upgraded turbo sim available for version 3.

well, you could check on the net if your model no. corresponds to the offical unlocked model nos.

Mine did and I could update to OS 3.0 without any hassles.

mine is from US. but i am using itunes account registered with Qatar store. no problem, except that not all apps available in US stores are available in Qatar store.

I checked at the apple website... my phone is from the czech republic, so it should be an unlocked unit. Now do i have to upgrade through an account in the czech itunes online store or is it possible through my account in the qatar itunes online store.

after surfing the internet on this issue for over 24 hours now ! the only answer i got was that no one has a clue about the solution or what is causing the problem !

in this case i am tempted to think that it is a hardware problem !

what is weird is that the phone is working fine now (crossing fingers)

but as soon as i will use my bluetooth or headset i am sure the problem will come back !

until now i have stoped using my speakers and bluetooth ! i think with only 4 to 5 months left for the 3gs to come out in our region ! it wont be wise to buy a new iphone 3g right now !

Jailbreaking 3.0 is possible. but 3.0 is still in Beta, and it would be unwise to try 3.0 at the moment with your locked iPhone. there are methods but come with heavy warning that this method could BRICK your iPhone permanently so dont jump start now. let it be released so as app for 3.0 would be out then with the new SDK. so keep your shirts on till then. have fun. again if you want to be adventurous, sure you can, no offense but follow the steps very carefully without any deviations. all the best.

Good news for the user who have updated their firmware to 2.2.1 accidentally, with which the software unlock method wont work. now there is a method to downgrade your firmware and baseband from 2.30 to 2.28. with which you can unlock your iPhone 3g and no need turbo sim anymore.

for iTunes yes.. with that account you can buy stuffs meant for Qatar market for all of your i products... iPod touch, iPod or iPhone or Macbook...

i found on a site.. a new method had been discovered to pull down the baseband from 2.30 to 2.28... once this can be done, then hell breaks lose.... no worries of turbo sim.. can be unlocked by software.... i havent tried it yet as i dont have 2.2.1 phone around to try it on.. if i get hold of 2.2.1 i will try and let u know...

next the jailbreaking shouldnt affect your itunes.. you case is such that, u created your userid with US credit card and verified US address for itunes. so the itunes sell products to the specific country.. and u cant buy stuffs which is meant to US customers in Qatar.... thats the story and its not coz of jailbreaking....

so i had to create another itunes account for Qatar verifying Qatar credit card..... hope this helps...

Jailbreaking and unlocking are too different things but follow one another...

to make it simple. first you jailbreak the iPhone then unlock it by software method. in other words u first liberate (jail break) the iPhone from the protection, then u attack and unlock it to work with other networks...

so jailbreaking of 2.2.1 is possible but not unlock.. once the phone is jailbroken u cant install the 3rd party softwares.......

at any point u can make a factor reset... by replacing the original firmware. but remember once u upgrade your iPhone (accidentally or incidentally) to firmware 2.2.1, u cant bring back it to 2.2, read my above post for details...

Sorry there is absolutely no method to unlock the 2.2.1 by software method unlike 2.2... so its a waste of time trying for. also the version 3 is out for beta testing... NEVER try it even for fun as even turbo sim cant help you out..

Hi master....I have the 300 shary w the broadband package in it pay but when I put the sim card to my iPhone it keep searching.... Btw to answer the question of somebody way earlier .... There is no such a thing unlock iphone in market that hv 2.2.1 version ...they have the earlier version that sell in black market.... But then again that against the law there so if u live overseas like us here Mac still can't get us....

I guess master_mas has answered well in detail on 3G with qtel. to add, you might face some problem with few turbo sim on 2.2.1 firmware version. if you have 2.2 firmware with baseband 2.28.. no issues with 3G.

in cydia download the 3G toggle along with yellowsn0w toggle under boss prefs source package.

i will tell u the best plan to get with iPhone..

u can take a mobile Boradband SIM card for 1 time fee of QR.100 QRs & monthly rent of QRs.200 with 3GB download a month

if you are in US then get the Gevey Turbo Sim for your 2.2.1 iPhone. rest its all here and even you can get the tools online..

if you already have the iPhone its ok. or if you are planning to buy a new one, then get the factory unlocked iPhones, which used to be $800 is just only $499 now (recession everywhere)... so that will take off your headache of using it with any network legally!!!!!!. ...

with the factory unlocked version you dont need to worry about firware upgrade either, you can ger the version 3 launched for beta testing......

anyways dont confuse this with jailbreaking.. jailbreaking becomes necessary if you want to either unlock your AT&T locked iPhones or to install 3rd party iPhone applications and games (which you get if for free).

with your factory unlocked iphones you can shop with apple store alone unless jailbroken.....

you can find the Gevey turbo sim (i recommend this as i have tried it on Qtel even on T-mobile and works charm) on ebay sometimes even for $10. look out for new version "Gevey plus 2". best wishes.

Hi i unlock iPhone for free. but remember you can unlock the iPhone with firmware 2.2 and modem baseband 2.28 with software unlock method. and if you iPhone has firmware 2.2.1 it can be downgraded to 2.2 and unlocked with software.. BUT, if your modem baseband is upgraded to 2.30.. thats it no software in the world (though some claim false) can unlock it except you have only one choice of using the turbo sim.

i learnt in qatar they charge 150 riyals for the turbo sim. but if they charge more for jailbreaking, then contact me to do it for free.

before using the turbosim the iphone must be jailbroken.

i got my Gevey turbo sim from us for $20. but its better to get it here locally as you can always ask if something goes wrong...
