Need to establish "Road Safety Authority"
Every day, many precious lives are wasted on the roads due to accidents. Unfortunately there is no “Road Safety Authority” to look at the major fatal accidents and recommend safety measures so as to avoid similar accidents in future.
There is a need to set up a new Road Safety Board to take up the safety task of road users with the following core mandate:
- Investigate the core reasons of each major accident in the country and recommend safety measures thereon.
- Check and classify the high risk roads, and put them under strict surveillance for safety checks.
- Recommend improvement of dangerous curves and diversions.
- Educate the drivers and other road users on highlighting the dangers of high speed, rainy and low visibility driving.
- Issue warnings to the drivers on humid, hot, bad and dusty weather.
- Recommend improvised passenger vehicles standard to the relevant authority.
- Arrange refresher short courses for drivers of below 25 years of age.
- Review and re-adjust the speed limits on high accident roads.
- Keep the accidental data for research, analysis and further solutions.
