Near Miss
Arriving on an Airbus on Friday night from Hong Kong, we came in on the aproach over West Bay and I could see the "Torch" on the right as we passed over the Sheraton. Gliding in across the Corniche and then dropping right down to the runway and just about to land, we must have been about twenty feet off the ground and lined up with the first few parked jets, when suddenly the engines burst into life and we were dramatically pushed back up ...the pilot then calmly announced "Sorry about that ladies and gentlemen, but there appears to be another aircraft on the runway". Surely this is a "near-miss"? Has anyone read about it in the paper?
Right on. It should be called a "near-hit"
"Near-miss" doesn't make much sense.
I am always careful.. I always "declare" the loaded pampers at customs..
LoL RP
Once the plane level ofF, Them calmly and collectively every one line up to use the toilet. Then everyone was gasping for oxygen due to that that stinking smell exiting from some of the passenger pants. Lucky for Britexpat, he always wears Adult pampers when he fly coach class.
The problem is I think you’re an overeducated, 27-year-old virgin who holds the hands of superstitious old women and promises them eternity.
20 feet eh?? any plus or minus or exact altitude?? lol

LOL!!!!! This thread is getting pretty funny!!
a near-miss is actually a hit, isn't it?
when two planes nearly collide, that's a near-hit. but when they do collide, they hit (or nearly missed, but didn't).
Maybe he should have tailgated and forced the ground airline to takeoff soon so that he can land right behind him. Or maybe he did not want to jump the red lights 6000 QRS is too much to pay !! lol
He should have flashed his landing lights at the slowpoke and then veered around him on the apron.

And the pilots should be made to wear a thobe!
If the plane was shaped like a Landcruiser, then the others would automatically get out of the way.
That is why these jets should be fixed with horns. He honked loud enough and the other one would move away.
Oooooh, weasel, there is such a thing as a "near miss." Been there, done that, don't wanna go THERE again.
Mandi
It seems strange to me that the captain of your aircraft would tell you this before you made your second approach (or maybe he did it after you landed safely?
BTW, this is my new "signature line" and not a commentary on any of the previous posts or the opening poster. Just wanted to clarify. This is a statement of fact though.
"you can't fix stupid"
No, this is not a near miss. It's called a "go-around" or "missed approach". The former, in this case as there was traffic on the runway. If anyone was at fault, it's the approach controller or ground controllers (or both) at the Doha airport. Not Qatar Airways.
Again, it's unlikely that it was a mistake. Probably for some reason the aircraft that landed earlier could not vacate the runway on time.
BTW, what the heck is a "near miss". It's either a hit or a miss.
Nope, not a "near miss." The previous aircraft merely didn't clear the runway in the expected time.

maybe he was desperate to go to the loo, veeerrrryyyy bad.......
stupid ATC, air traffic controller! this might end up with more than a hundred dead! that s a commun mistake everywhere but very dangerous! the jet might not respond sometimes as quick as the pilot expect...byebye!!
lol ;) This is not a near miss! Extremely common at busy airports, likely to be a mistake by ATC or the captain of the aircraft on the runway.
of an incident in Qatar where an aircraft was doing a full engine test on the runway and the control tower gave the OK for a Gulf Air flight to land. He hopped over the one testing it's engines at the last minute and landed.
There was plenty of runway because Doha was designed in kilometres and built in miles.

One of my favourites too. Very interesting programme. Unfortunately, I'm not subscribed to NatGeo in Qatar. Can only watch it when home :0(

Don't want no drama,
No, no drama, no, no, no, no drama
"my favourite show is air crash investigation"
lol, i hate that show to what i did to be and my fear of flying (used to be non existent before natgeo introduced it) but that said i cant help from not watching it
and that sure is a near miss, but those things happen, wonder what the repercussions are for air-traffic control....
my favourite show is air crash investigation.
only when a plane crashes will it come in the newspapers :)
Not that they will be publishing any of this data.. After all it is five star airline for service not for safety..

HE WHO DARES WINS
Near-misses happen more often than you'd imagine and don't often get reported. I'm talking about all around the world, not just Qatar. The relevant authorities will investigate it though.
