Indeed I expect a higher level of awareness and intellect from you as well SuperNurse. I apologize for stereotyping you as such. It will not happen again. I promise.

It is beautiful though that you seem to be a connoisseur of hip hop rap lyrics. And yet strange that you don't bother to maybe look up the definition of the word...

It is said that black Americans began using this word amongst themselves as term of endearment in an attempt to remove the painful history involved in the word. To make the word so common amongst themselves that it was like saying 'man' or 'dude'.

In my opinion it did not work. It is still a word that many English scholars consider to be the most powerful, volatile and ugly word in the English lexicon.

Personally, it is a word I have no problem erasing from my vocabulary. It is a word that black Americans deserve to possess due to its historical usage... and hopefully they will one day convince every last one of themselves to lock it away, NEVER to be used again...

Nigel?

Now that's an N-word to get offended at.

The N word is an unforgiving, utterly disrespectful term that shouldn't be used by anybody, no matter what your skin colour. But to say that in some cirlces ( ie - African/American), its acceptable for a black man to call another black man a Nigger is hypocritical, no matter what tone its used in.

I understand the history of the word and I reiterate that it should never be used, but if someone uses the word on a daily basis, he could hardly get defensive if some moron decides to throw it at him one day.

supernurse - why would you comment on a thread about it if you don't know the history of the word and can't be bothered to research it? The more and more you post the more surprised and shocked I am at the ignorance you demonstrate.

By anonymous• 28 Jun 2008 10:22

I wouldn't use it anyway...it just doesn't sound right with my posh English accent....

By anonymous• 28 Jun 2008 10:16

is the problem. And the way a person says it is making it worse. It's the way of delivering the word toward a person you are talking. And in most cases, the difference in skin on the persons involved.

If a black man says it to another blackman, they can feel the tone and the intent (it could be a friendly call in the same way that sometimes we call somebody motherf****r. without the bad connotation.

It's better to stay on the safe side by not using this word to another person if he is not that close to you!!!!!

Supernurse...I suppose it's a good thing that that would require research nowadays. For ppl my age and older, no research required.

Nice to think that kind of discrimination, hate, and bigotry could someday be a thing of the past.

Been reading this thread with interest, but hesitant to comment because part of me believes that Supernurse must be yanking your chains.

Supernurse, you only associate the word with hip-hop? Is it really possible you're totally unaware of the history of the word and its painful connotations? Hmmm.. I'm having a hard time swallowing that.

By the way, I think the word should be done away with completely... However, the black community needs to put its house in oeder alo.. I recall Bill Crosby using it quite recently...

Supernurse, the truth hurts doesn't it?

I think PhillyEagles2007 has pretty much covered it. I'm black myself and the only way I can justify people who use that word, black or otherwise is their ignorance. There is a lot of history and pain that is synonimous with that word. There are people within the race who call each other that and it is acceptable in some circles (music esp.), and I agree it seems rather hypocritical but slowly the word is being phased out. I wouldn't go around calling another woman's husband or boyfriend "honey" or "babe" so why would non-blacks think they can call us the N word?

If a non-black person called me that to my face, I'd probably shrug it off as ignorance. But there are people who would not be so kind...

It is a negative reminant of days gone bye. People have embraced a negative word the same way people sometime embrace negative sterotypes. It is a double standard but still that's the way it is.

As a black person I can tell you it is NOT a word that you would want to use. Even in black culture there is a movement going on to stop using the word. I am not saying its right but using this word also has rules. For you as a non black person to use this word could result in some bodily harm (not kiding).

Supernurse your logic or lack of it is sad. These same people refer to women as bit.... , so does that mean men can call women this word simply becaue they do? The reason this word is so prevelant in music and movies is because unfortunately negativity sells.

Try it they shouldn't get offended....but Indians are technically 'niggers' are they? I thought people like Snoop dogg and rappers are niggers...well thats what they call each other anyway...I spose it would be technically right to call an Indian a nigger if he was a rapper......
