Most energy efficient tram system

Qatar Foundation placed an order for 19 state of the art Siemens Avenio trams that will run through its Doha campus in an attempt to make it a car-free site by Autumn 2015. According to Siemens, the order valued at more than EUR 100 million (QR 446.3 million) will consist of a 11.5 km catenary-free (overhead contact lines) tramway serving 25 stations.

The energy efficient and environment-friendly trams are said to produce less CO2 emissions. “Siemens is setting new standards in tram and light rail technology with its Avenio platform. The energy storage system for optimizing energy balance and its operation without overhead contact lines are further aspects that go toward making the Avenio a model system for sustainable, rail-based mass transit as well as the most modern tram in the world.” said Hans-Joerg Grundmann, CEO of Siemens Rail Systems.

Engineer Saad Al Muhannadi, Qatar Foundation Vice President of Capital Projects and Facilities Management, said: “This agreement provides yet more evidence that Qatar Foundation is helping to spearhead the nation’s drive towards environmental sustainability. All of our new constructions are designed with the environment in mind, and this innovative transport scheme further demonstrates this commitment. Ultimately, our aim is to make the Qatar Foundation site a car-free zone and, with the introduction of the new tram system, we are well on our way to achieving this goal.”

This is another in a long line of investments the nation has been making as part of their Qatar National Vision 2030. A priority has been environmental development with the aim of “harmony between economic growth, social development and environmental protection”.

It goes hand-in-hand with a car-free zone. Let's see how the locals accept this.
