The monster in charge of children

Harrowing story of nursery worker who raped a toddler and and groomed girls.

What do we do to stop these types of cases re-occuring ?

_______________________

Paul Wilson, 20, conned his way into a care assistant's role after telling bosses he was "passionate" about working with kids.

But he was already a predatory pervert who over a three-year period had groomed 22 girls aged between 12 and 16 on the internet.

Parents at the nursery where Wilson was employed for two years were told there is no evidence he attacked kids other than the two-year-old.

Horrific photos of him orally raping the youngster were found on his PC and phone.

"It's a parent's worst nightmare. They cannot be sure that this man wasn't abusing other children."

Wilson admitted 47 charges including two rapes on one child, grooming girls and distributing pornographic pictures.

Cops on the case described him as a "very dangerous individual" who poses a threat to teenage girls and children.

Saw this last night on the web and it is truly awful- makes one want to vomit.

There are of course stringent measures in place when it comes to employing people who work with vulnerable individuals – especially the young, elderly and disabled. However, they seem to fail in some cases.

How to trap a person who is intent on this type of behaviour?

It is actually very difficult.

They do not only groom the child but in some cases (not this one as some carers had suspicions) but they also groom the family.

It is actually getting easier to be this kind of person –mobile phones, digital cameras and of course the internet has in some ways made it easier to for them to do it but in some ways can help in tracking them.

For Child Protection Officers and the Police to move in they practically have to have 100% proof that something is going on. They cannot be allowed to work on ‘instinct’ or ‘reports’.

Should men be allowed to work with children? Of course they should- there are many wonderful men out there that work with children. There have been cases as we know, of women who are involved in this sort of activity.

Horrific case of child abuse and let’s hope he gets life.

Not necessarily with pedophiles jjj75. There are many cases of pedophiles just springing up "out of the blue" so to speak. Which is why I think further research is necessary.

Pilgram, actually those that abuse are usually abused themselves when young and so the cycle repeats itself

By anonymous• 8 Jun 2011 09:34

Excellent point jjj75. Also, very little research has been done into what makes a person become a pedophile. In my opinion, if we want a long term solution we need to figure out why it happens and how to stop it.

MBK

I know a senior social worker in the UK specialising in this area and what people don't realise is that abuse of this form is statistically no more than it was say 50 years ago when most mothers stayed at home, it is just that we hear about it more through the media.

Also, it is rare that abuse is from someone the child is not all that familiar with, most times it happens from family members. Sad but true and how do we protect vulnerable children in society against this?

By anonymous• 8 Jun 2011 09:28

Actually S-isale chemical castration is offered to many pedophiles. Unfortunately for most pedophiles it has nothing to do with sexual feeling, and even castrated they will continue to abuse children.

They should be locked up for life.

MBK, there was recently a case of a star involved in paedophilia who was arrested in Vietnam or somewhere there I believe and he was let off with pressure from his govt I believe. Now when the high and mighty are allowed to get away with it, one can imagine the seriousness with which the powers that will be willing to bring stricter punishment.

By s_isale• 8 Jun 2011 09:25
s_isale

TB, will the PC brigade support these kind of punishments. They will say the punishment is barbaric. Unless there is a strong deterrent and a just society, it will be difficult to control crime to the level we expect it to be controlled.

It is worst when it happens to young children that cannot even speak as in this case!

Plus I was refering to this particular case which is reported in The Sun tabloid.

so again it is the society that is creating opportunities for such molestors to abuse the system.

Just imagine if the government paid enough to the mothers/fathers (one of the parent) to stay at home until their kids were school aged? Would this go some way in eleviating the menace of these kind of things taking place in the first place?

By s_isale• 8 Jun 2011 09:10
s_isale

it is a general combination of the faults in the society that is leading to such scenarios.

If this was the first instance of his crime wouldnt he have been let off easily with the help of the PC brigade?

At the end of the day parents need to be more responsible, alert and attentive of course you get the odd bounty hunters among the parents as well.

Kareena74

I think it was a total over reaction to the shopkeeper when there seemed to be little evidence that he was anything but a nice man who was fond of children. My son gets pats and comments and pinched cheeks all the time and I would say in most cases it is purely innocent. If you did not like it smile and take the child away, there was no need to chastise someone for what was probably a purely innocent affectionate gesture. I always think that a lot of workers here have children back home that they may not see for 2 years and they miss them and to see a child reminds them of what they have not got and just for a brief moment they are happy remembering their own children somewhere far away.

The checks in the UK are pretty stringent already. Perhaps these cases are now coming to light because parents are becoming more vigilant and authorities are willing to take action.

FS, sure, and he may well have worked elsewhere with children and either never did anything or was never caught. Also he's only 20, so perhaps they didn't require previous experience for his job?

Pilgram... isnt it important for the nursery to employee someone who is experienced in childcare.

Kareena I would say you have some SERIOUS issues with men. It is not normal to be so scared of a shop keeper who was simply being nice to your daughter.

FS, without a doubt he's had these urges for a long time, the issue is he was never caught. Which means a background check would turn up nothing.

TB, I'm not sure. Perhaps psychological testing? But it would be very expensive to put every applicant through a psychiatric assessment. :S

By Formatted Soul• 8 Jun 2011 08:45

Kareena its not always easy to keep them away from men...all we can do is to educate our children about the dangers tell them not to allow anyone touch them inappropriate places or not get very close to men...and always encourage them to tell the parents about any such things happening outside the house.

I don't understand how the authorities did not pick up on him as there are such a lot of stringent checks done in the UK now on people who work with children

But you leave me no option so I have to spill it out here...

Women do not have p---s / d----k so they cannot f--k a girl in the v----a or a boy in his a--- but men have a tool, a p---s / d----k so they are capable of f----ing a girl in her p-----y / v-----a and even a boy from behind..

So now do you guys get it? Why it is better to leave your child in the care of women not men..

TB, the PC's will make sure that he gets out in a few years. All he will get is a simple imprisonment. Would it deter him from doing it again?

No.

I went to the supermarket with my friend's 3 year old daughter while the mother was tryind to find a parking. Anyways this male shop assistant / sales man tried coochie cooing that little girl as soon as we entered and then pinched her cheecks and shcok hands with her.. I was mad and furious to say the least.. I just looked at him sternly and said keep your hand off her and don't you dare play with my girl or for that matter with any other girl or boy or else I am going to report you to the management.. Do you understand? He said yes madam.. I said that is better, now back to your work and don't follow us.. It sounds rude but that is what I feel.. I know how these people are.. I have heard many incidents from friends who were abused or molested when they were babies by male shop attendents or male Quran teachers (qaari saabs) or male tuition teachers.. It is alway better to be safe than sorry so I would suggest don't leave your kids in the care of men..

The issue FS is when he has no previous record and excellent references. Which I think is the case here. The guy had never been caught before (may have never done anything before).

But I personally would not leave my child especially my daughter with any male care giver or attendant or whatever.. On second thoughts, not even my son since these days one could expect just about anything. It is just a matter of personal choice, religion has got nothing to do with it..

Yes I said it is the system again that let these peado slip through the net. But for a care giver job is generally seen as a womens job just like nurses. Even though I have few male nurse friends back home but traditionally care givers are a bit like nurses predominantly female?

By Formatted Soul• 8 Jun 2011 08:22
Formatted Soul

I think it’s the lack of thorough background check of employees which lead to such incidents. Especially when working with small children who are not old enough to react… they should employee only people with good references.

By britexpat• 8 Jun 2011 08:14

It is not about male carers. Last year a female was convicted of abusing toddlers and running a paedo ring.

By Milky_BarKid• 8 Jun 2011 08:02
Milky_BarKid

Kareena yes it could be seen as Equailty going wrong? But I think in this case Pilgrim is right it is the system which is at fault on not doing enough checks. This kind of cases will further cast a doubt on Male care givers and their suitability with working with children.

By anonymous• 8 Jun 2011 07:56

There are lots of male nursery assistants and teachers, and they do wonderful jobs Kareena. This is an isolated incident of a pervert slipping through the cracks.

By galloper48• 8 Jun 2011 07:45

nevertheless what did happen to that school authorities; don't they have the duty to do a background check on all personnel applyig for a position??

This s just outrageous!!

That I heard a man employed to work as a nursery assistant. Isn't this primarily a woman's job? I mean all the schools that I have seen and heard off hire female nursery and pre school teachers and assistants. I guess it is the school's fault in the first place for hiring a man in the first place. I personally would never leave my child in a nursery or day care center where they keep male assistants or care taker.
