If you have a conventional microwave - ie it has microwave + grill + conventional then you can pre heat the microwave.

I knw from expeirence that a normal gas oven is any day better :-)

Microwave...has about 3 settings (I guess) read the manual long time ago.

A microwave oven has 3 modes:

1. Microwave - it uses the radiowaves to cook the food.

2. Grill - where you have to continously turn the food - I think (not sure)!!

3. Just plain heating.

I guess only in the first is the waves used, and only micro-able plates/dishes are to be used.

In 2 & 3 you can use metal or any make of dishes to cook. So you can select the Mode.

You have to preheat for 2 & 3. But make sure you have selected the correct Mode.

I m still not sure if the above is 100% true.

IF you are trying to put some warmth and moisture in the microwave, just put a glass of water in and heat it for a minute(or until it boils)...let it set for another minute, then remove it (DO NOT remove it immediately because it can boil over onto you)

If you mean, can you just turn on the microwave and let it heat up..NO< NO and NO...dangerous..

I let bread dough rise in the microwave all the time..with the hot water process I just described..its great because the moisture and heat keep it rising and being with the door shut keeps drafts off the dough.

To my knowledge, you can't preheat a microwave (it's not feasible).
