my son challenged me to solve this problem, can you help me

If 10 birds are sold for one reyal, one duck is sold for 2 reyals and one chiken sells for 5 reyals

How can you but a mix of 100 birds for 100 reyals

Any one good with math ... please help, my son thinks I am a mathimatics wizard

am i that bad at maths? lol.. or was it that i was lazy to try.. lol.. guess u shud check this out in the mornin..

You can solve it then graphically using 2x+5y=90..

Let

x=duck

y=chicken

z=bird

Given:

1. selling prices:

x=2

y=5

z=.1

2. Quantity:

x=?

y=?

z=100

Therefore the equation to get a total of 100 selling price is:

2x+5y+.1(100)=100

Simplify:

2x+5y+10=100

2x+5y=90

Then you can subsitute any number to the variable to get the combinations (mix) and have a total 100 riyals.

trick question - you have birds, ducks and chickens in the statement part of the question yet you only want the number of birds in the answer.

You said 10 birds cost 1 riyal but you want to know how you can have a mix of 100 birds for 100 Riyal. It's not possible because 100 birds would cost 10 riyal

Ok, I assumed that 10 birds are the smallest "package" you can get because the price was 10 for 1 ryial.

And don't spend too much time looking for a 3rd equation. There is none! No way...you could draw it in a x/y-coordinate system, and see when you hit a natural (full) number...non other way of doing it IMO.

Hmmmm...

How did you come up with "you know that h can only be 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 or 90..."?

By analogy? Can you come up with 3 equations for the 3 unknowns?

Okay, I'll get out of work now and see if I still have my math skill.

and to end it: you know that

h= 100-47.37+1.579k

you know that h can only be 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 or 90...

h=10, k=-26.99

h=20, k=-20.66

h=30, k=-14.33

h=40, k=-7.99

h=50, k=-1.66

h=60, k=4.66

h=70, k=11

h=80, k=17.33

h=90, k=23.66

h=70, k=11

j=47.37 - 2.579k = 19 :)

I try, had enough math in my studies...

If 10 birds are sold for one reyal, one duck is sold for 2 reyals and one chiken sells for 5 reyals

b= birds, d = ducks, c=chicken

h, j, k as the number you are looking for...

equations

h+j+k = 100 (100 animals)

h*0.1+j*2+k*5= 100 (100 ryial)

b=0.1

d=2

c=5

from the first equation, we can get: h = 100-j-k

put this in 2)

(100-j-k)*0.1+j*2+5*k=100

10-0.1j-0.1k+2j+5k=100

1.9j = 90 - 4.9k

j = 47.37 - 2.579k

Then, you have to solve it graphical...no way of doing it mathematical, with only 2 equations and 3 unknown numbers.

you need three equations from the given problem and eliminate per variable (x + y + z), that's what I remember in solving this one.

I am sure there is a X+y+z type equation..

The answer is 70 birds = 7 Riyals

19 ducks = 38 Riyals

and 11 chickens = 55 Riyals

Total 100 = 100

Hope it can help. :)
