Rain is not the cause of the crash, It was a pilot error for sure. If he had a doubt in his mind that he would miss the touch down point he should have initiated a go around, which he didn't.

Pilots were also experienced, The first Officer was landing the aircraft, previously he had made 66 landings in mangalore. Captain had made 19 landings in mangalore, he had 10,000 hours in which 7000 were in command, and 2500 on 737-800 as a captain.

I Don't no if the aircraft was below the glide slope, or in this case it must have been above the glide slope.

Only the cvr and fdr can only tell what had happened.

Saadm I heard from one report that he did indeed initiate the 'missed approach procedure' when he realized he had overshot the landing point by a huge margin.

He probably increased power to overshoot the runaway but the aircraft was far too down. Maybe he tried this at a lower height and when the aircraft bumped down at a much higher speed due to increased engine power, he tried to brake as hard as he could which led to the tyres bursting.

Looks like when something started going wrong everything went wrong

By Mehnis• 22 May 2010 13:42

Rain alone could not have caused this. In any case it was just light drizzle and the visibility from all reports is said to be 6km. Aircrafts can land safely even in driving heavy rain too.

By anonymous• 22 May 2010 13:39
anonymous

low visibility

By FlyingAce• 22 May 2010 13:38

Actually Mangalore Airport Runway is A (Category C Runway)

Approach Speed Should Be 121 knots or more, but less than 141 knots.

By anonymous• 22 May 2010 13:36
anonymous

How come the runway was not wet when there was light rain? Where did the water go?

By FlyingAce• 22 May 2010 13:35
FlyingAce

vis was 6km and light rain, and runway was not wet. Mangalore airport has a spill over area of 90 meter which in this case was very less.

The pilot in command in time of the landing should have initiated a missed approach procedure at around 200 feet.

737-800 aircrafts engine response time is 8 sec.

By Mehnis• 22 May 2010 13:34
Mehnis

It looks like the pilot missed the landing point by a huge distance ( this is confirmed) and then panicked. Either slammed the brakes too hard or tried to increase power to gain altitude to overshoot the entire runway. Not sure.

Only the black box will reveal what happened in the cockpit. The air traffic controller states there was no distress calls.

About ILS and landing I think it just guides you in based on all the data available. In the end it is the pilot who lands based on what he receives on ILS.

Only a person well versed on this subject can inform us.

By Arien• 22 May 2010 13:24
Arien

Being on ILS, then its indeed a technical error to land beyond the landing point no?.

By Mehnis• 22 May 2010 13:17
Mehnis

Another report says he tried to abort landing at the last moment realizing he overshot the landing point by a huge distance but this is unconfirmed. The visibility was reportedly 6 km which is good enough and there was only a light rain. And he was locked on to ILS Instrument Landing System.

Just heard that one survivor a 4 year old girl died in hospital. Damn sad

By anonymous• 22 May 2010 13:15

Specs and runway requirements can be found here:

By Arien• 22 May 2010 13:13
Arien

Mehnis..oops, just another one to the majority, pilot errors.. seems heavy landed, and that too beyond the spot and being a Table top he must had the complete breaks which didnt help and overshot..

this happens when there is poor visibility I guess. was it raining?

By anonymous• 22 May 2010 13:10
anonymous

Boeing 737 "as this aircraft" they are tecnologically advanced planes

By Mehnis• 22 May 2010 13:08
Mehnis

Apparently landed about 3000 ft beyond the touch down point. Pilot braked very hard resulting in bursting of tyres. Skidded towards the end of runaway and hit the wall. The reports suggest that the plane broke up into two on the impact and burst into flames while sliding down the valley.

Almost all the survivors were the ones who were thrown out when the aircraft broke up.

All preliminary evidence points to pilot error

By Arien• 22 May 2010 12:59
Arien

737-800 aircraft is one of the most modern of that capacity, its called NG- aircraft (New Generation).safer than A320s which is of the same size n capacity.

I dont htink its anything to do with the craft. The runway is a TABLETOP one, must have overshot..another pilot error?? we will know soon..

By FlyingAce• 22 May 2010 12:58
FlyingAce

This Particular Aircraft 737-800 Needs 2500 Feet Of Runway To Land, And Mangalore Had 8000 Feet Of Runway With 6km Vis, Light Rain, And Runway Was Not Wet.

If you really look at the statistics there are more deaths on Indian roads than anywhere else in the world. Apparently 13 every hour and 114000 died in 2007 and many more injured .

"On average, 36 million people die each year as a direct or indirect result of poor nutrition, which is more than 1 death each second." (WHO)

By osofedup• 22 May 2010 11:22

Hi Soniya

The problem I have with numerologists is they come up with all kinds of conspiracies for all kinds of numbers eg the number 9 adds to 9 for all it's multiples ie 9x2= 18, 1 and 8 =9, 9x3=27, 2 and 7= 9 etc etc. Also 999 is really the devil's number inverted ie 666. Guess I am a little cynical about this

By FlyingAce• 22 May 2010 11:17
FlyingAce

thanks for sharing soniya. But i don't believe in this. It is the destiny.

By soniya• 22 May 2010 11:09
soniya

Do u guys believe in NUMEROLOGY?? I don't believe but sometimes the circumstances have made me to ponder a lot on this..

The number 8 considered to be rule by the planet SATURN(shani)which is inauspicious for many..Today is saturday, the day of SATURN and hence number 8..The total survivors r even number 8..The person whose interview i have seen in the news channel told that he jumped from his seat no.98 when plane crashed into two parts..The addition of number 98 is 9+8=17=1+7=8 (again)..Three people sitting in the same row of 98 got their life saved as well coz of that man..

Well i m sure many won't be agreed with me but i just thought to share my views which i have calculated thru my bit knowledge in this..

I read an article dated 15th May stating that the airport was to receive international status soon but that prior to that, the runway was to be extended.

By FlyingAce• 22 May 2010 10:27

This was not a technical fault in the aircraft. I Damn sure about it. This means it was a pilot error. The pilot would have missed the touch down zone, this is to my knowledge and flying experience that i have.

8000 feet runway is sufficent. I Have landed in 7500 feet, if the pilot had a doubt he should have aborted the landing and initiated a go around, which he didn't.

i leave very close to manglore, and have travelled many a times using AIE to the same airport.

total 166 people were on plane of which 6 were crew. until now 8 people are informed to be alive. and 40 dead bodies have been removed.

the airport was an international airport with a sufficient runway of 8000 feet. this was a new runway initiated in 2006. and met all necessary conditions and was liscenced.

Accident is suggested to have been due to overshoot(ie the plane landed much far away from the point it should have landed and thus runway proved to be short)

as per the reports of the survivors, the plane landed and within a few seconds they heard some big sound and they noticed an opening ie the plane broke open and they jumped out of it while the plane was still sliding. luckily they survived who jumped out.

seven people of my place died. father and his 3 kids(whose wife had expired in a tragic van accident a few months back near manglore thus he had taken his kids on a visit with him to dubai and this was their return journey) and a mother with her 3 year old son and another 10 year old boy.

May Allah grant patience to all the deceased families.
