Man drowns whilst attempting to bathe camel at sea

An attempt by a group of men to give a camel a bath off the coast of Sharjah took a fatal twist when the animal's handler drowned.

The Sudanese man had gone to the beach at Hamriyah with his Emirati sponsor yesterday morning, who order the handler and two co-workers to wash the humped animal in the waves.

Major Khalid Ali Obaid Al Ali from Hamriyah Police Station in Sharjah said: “The Sudanese man who died was in his 20s, he was working as a farmer for the Emirati man. He was with two Asian workers. They had brought the camel to the sea to give it a bath.”

Police said the men and their camel got into danger as the waves were high and the strong current started to drag them further from the shore. It is claimed the Sudanese man desperately tried to hold on to the camel but he was washed away. The two Asian workers also got into difficulty and a group of beachgoers launched a rescue bid.

Major Al Ali added: “The camel was fine and continued standing in the sea. Our rescue team arrived and started searching for the Sudanese man with a helicopter. After four hours we found his body 200m up the beach. The body was taken to Khalifa Hospital in Ajman.”

Police said one of the Asian men was also taken to hospital for treatment. The Emirati sponsor has been arrested and taken to the police station for questioning on suspicion of endangering lives as he broke Sharjah Municipality rules that prohibit anyone taking animals into the sea.

Al Ali continued: “This is a tragedy. This man died due to bad behaviour. People are not allowed to take animals in the sea and endanger lives. People should not do such things.”

PS: britey, hope you dont take your Cuban Shotputter to beaches anymore....:(

for pets that are this expensive you'd think there would be camel spas/salons by now. dogs and cats have them.

couldn't they at least bathe it with a hose in the garage or wherever it is they keep camels?

*for a second there i thought the title meant a man made a camel drown while it was taking a bath

edit-mods changed the title. there is a god ^_^

No bro..I didn't intend on singling you out at all. Rather I found it extremely disturbing that anyone would chose this post to crack jokes of the circumstance of the man's death, and some even in a discriminatory manner! I mean would be sitting here loling had it been our loved one who was to face such a horrifying end? And how would the deceased's loved ones feel were they to read some of the statements above including a very tasteless quip of him probably not having bathed himself? Tragic!

Sun: Right...Very saddening indeed!

As usual, FathimaH always on the side of truth & fairness. Unfortunately, some QL members are not realizing the horror and helplessness of his painful death.

hey if that was for me; i was only mocking what that Major said; i do find it a silly thing to say..there's been a tragic death and here we have this Major describing what the camel was doing the whole time.

Anybody who has dealt with camels would know that they are very stubborn by nature and are afraid of water. Asking a poor guy (who probably could not even swim)to give camel a bath in the sea is monstrous. That idiot sponsor should be subjected to water boarding and made to pay the blood money. They are your servants, but you don't have right to jeopardize their lives for your wicked fun!

Such a frightening way to go.The details of his final moments are painful to read, as I can't but help imagine how terrified he must have been.My heart goes out to his loved ones.

Is it just me, or is not cracking jokes at the expense of another's tragedy and pain a truly ghoulish and insensitive thing to do? Ah well, it takes all sorts!

'The camel was fine and continued standing in the sea'..sad story but that quip by Major Ali is hilarious. What else did he expect the camel to do??..swim after the man and save his life?

So authorities here in qatar shall start to advice SEALINE BEACH management to remove the CAMEL in their area used for fee ride by beach lover!

Looks like the guy was holding onto the camel at the cost of his own safety as his sponsor would have held him responsible for the camel running or swimming away to a distant land
