Make up and such like

Hello ladies,

Anyone already out there tell me the availability of brands like Clarins, La Prairie (I know in Dubai this is much cheaper than UK so I'm living in hope of Qatar..), Chanel and Aveda (haircare) - I can bring supplies or I can shop there. I know it's a bit sad but I do like my girly things :-)

PS Nice shoe shops???

Hey, does any one know if they have a Jimmy Choo store in Dubai?

Butterfly, poor dogs. They're getting their pleasure at the expense of the poor animal. That anyone would even try to dress up my cat!!!! I like diamonds too, sadly it's more within my budget to buy a nice pair of shoes than a lovely diamond (unless jewellery is more reasonable out there too, in which case I'm seriously starting to worry about my salary!). Also the passing on argument is only valid if you have kids. Shoes are just beautiful things, little pieces of architecture, beautifully engineered, designed, created, lovely, lovely things. ;-)

In that case Butterfly, I think they have too much money and too little life. I can't stand seeing dressed up dogs.

Now I can understand these americans that get a rat-dog a buy loads or extremely expensive designer clothes for their rat-dogs. If that´s what makes them happy...

Whatever makes you happy i reckon Bfly. Only here once so you may as well enjoy yourself.

You get joy out of helping others so go for it. Some get joy out of shoes.

For me both a just ways of making oneself feel good so are both just as valid.

after all they last forever, it´s something you can pass off to your family, it can be sold off when you desperately need money, and it has a sentimental value.

But shoes????

charity begins with me. Mostly ends with me too.

Shoes, TVs, Cars, holidays all for me.

Giasi,

Welcome to our posting! Yes!!! You are agreeing with some of us. This is EXACTLY what some of us have been saying. Male support is always welcome ;-)

At the risk of abuse from the guys for posting on what appears a girly post :)

Why cant you do both? you can indulge yourself to the level you can afford AND help people (charity, volunteering etc.

Im a man so my shoes tend to be practical and i think the most expensive pair i ever purchased was QR300... and they were boots!!

But us guys have no problem coughing up 200,000 for a totally impracticle car, or 10,000 for a TV.

Dohagirl, you're soooo right! Anyone can hand over some cash to assuage their guit, it's far, far more telling if you give up some of your time to spend making things better. Also having worked a lot with refugees, both in the UK and abroad, money is just part of the problem, many people would much prefer to be self sufficient and what they want/need is someone to take the time to help them acquire them.

Would the sick, hungry child, be less hungry in a few weeks because I hadn't bought my shoes? No. But if I go to where she lives and help with a project to teach her and her family how to grow food/build wells, whatever then maybe she won't be.

There are lots of ways to help people that don't involve giving up your hard earned money. I volunteer. Arguably volunteering works much better than just giving money.

By Qatarcat• 14 Jun 2006 10:50

I can well afford to buy the shoes and help the child. Why should I deny myself certain things because some government out there can't take care of its people? It's not my fault, really. I do what I can, but hello, I can't help ALL sick children out there. I don't work hard as I do to help sick children. I do help them because I can, but not at the expense of my level of life.

I don't have a "thing" with shoes and I don't own a hundred pairs, but neither am I buying phone numbers for US$3mn. So maybe you should allocate sense of guilt where appropriate and leave people who work hard for their money out of it? Just a thought.

What you are saying is that I should work hard, make money, keep just enough for myself to cover basic necessities and give the rest to sick children?? Sorry, this is not the way I see it.

By butterfly• 14 Jun 2006 10:38
butterfly

Lets get subreal.

Imagine you enter the Gucci store. You see that really expensive pair of shoes. You go to pay and the cashier shows you a sick child. He tells you that you can either buy the shoes or give the money to that child and it will save his life.

What would you do? Buy the shoes? Because you worked hard, because you deserve it, because you give money to charity anyways? Or would you rather save that life?

The only difference is that the child is not in front of you. You don´t get to see him.

I always think that when buying luxuries for myself. That´s why I hate luxuries.

But then again, each to their own.I have also my vices and my sins. I´m nowhere near perfect.

By dohagirl• 14 Jun 2006 10:32

I like shoes. But I could never justify spending a whole lot on them. In the end I would rather save up for a trip to yet another country, and my suitcases get to heavy lugging all those shoes around (found that out going to Mexico). Also I always end up wearing just one pair until they fall apart.

By Qatarcat• 14 Jun 2006 10:29

Yes you can look just as good in cheap shoes, I agree. But my addiction to shoes has little to do with how they make me look to others. It is how they make me feel, if it makes any sense at all :p

By butterfly• 14 Jun 2006 00:00

but everyone is different and I accept that and my intention was not critise other life style choices. Yet I cannot understand what is it with some women and shoes. It´s not like a pair of shoes is going to make you any prettier or slimmer or elegant. I mean... they are just shoes! And really, I am very vain myself, I like looking pretty and all that, but you can look just as good on a pair of cheap shoes.

Anyways, just as well, cos I couldn´t afford to spend that much on shoes, so just put on whatever I find on the sales at the local grocery store.

Oh Qatarcat! You are definitely a woman after my own heart...and at the risk of being controversial I too do charity work, at present I am working to help kids in Iraq, after the devastation a so-called Christian president has left them in!

I wish I could fly first class, perhaps one day :-)

My mum visited last week and I bought a frighteningly expensive but beautiful, long skirt.

Selfridges sale is week after next, the rest of the time I work, I work, I work!

I had some trouble having kids, now we have accepted it, and instead turned to what we both enjoy, new experiences, luxury, helping others to enjoy life too, whatever we can afford...

By Qatarcat• 13 Jun 2006 23:06
Qatarcat

LOL

OK shoes... I rarely buy shoes that are cheaper than QR 700... and the more they cost, the better I feel about it, does that make me a bad/vain person?

If I can fly first class - I fly first class. Life is too short to spend even few hours (which may well be your last, I am totally terrified of flying!) crammed in economy.

And here is the punchline - this is EXACTLY why I am not planning to have kids - I will probably feel bad whenever I indulge MYSElF, and I couldn't possibly be happy if it happens. Yes, I guess I am a bad person.

However, just like Princess here, I do my share of charity work and helping out those less fortunate. I work hard for my money, it definitely doesn't fall from the sky into my pocket. I pretty much believe I am therefore entitled to spend it the way I please.

Sorry, in my comment before, the football bit was for Lauridg, not Qatarcat, sorry Qatarcat! Have no idea what you feel about shoes, except you were very helpful about make up before!

Princess, Equinox, I'm right with you. Trust me if I was there and had some spare cash I'd be at the Gucci sale! And you that is a fabulous price - on sale here they'd still be twice that!

I don't have a problem with spending money I've earned. We all have different interests, Qatarcat, I notice you have a football thing on your tie off, personally I hate football, can't conceive of ever spending money on going to see it, etc, but have nothing against people who do. I love opera though...I think Princess and I just like making ourselves feel good by looking nice...

I wasn´t trying to critise you or trying to make you appear self-indulgent. I don´t know you... you may be a wonderful person, or you may not. I don´t know and I don´t care.

What I Know for sure is that if I spent QR700 in a pair of shoes, I would feel pretty damn bad about it.

My dear.. I am too a christian and have morales etc.. There is nothing stopping me from enjoying the friuits of my labor even after giveing back to the world. Money does not solve everything and we all help on many levels.......

What are your vices??? I would rather buy as many gucci shoes and diamonds as I can afford and give back to the needy as I can. I spend each and every one of my vacactions in 3rd world countries assisting the poor, building churches, shealters, teaching them to read write and pray etc... should I stop doing that because i go on a first class ticket???? come on life is too short and I work to damm hard.

I agree with QC I would not buy shoes here although I did here some ladies from one of the collages here say that they have some nice summer slip ons there. However there are shoes and shoes depends upon your tase and dress style.

As for cosmetics if you have the chance to stopover in Dubai go and buy there - Dubai is definately still much cheaper than Doha in many articles.

Electronics are a great deal cheaper in Dubai than they are here.

Both La Prairie and Channel are cheaper than the uk and the sales staff are helpful (modern home)... Ref Shoes, what brands do you like? Gucci shoes here are on par with the UK for example and Nine West, Dune & Aldo are cheaper than the UK (for sure).

Last time I went to the UK was last year, and I didn't do any cosmetics shopping/estimation. So unfortunately I can't help you there :)

Thanks, do you know if they are a bit cheaper there than the UK?

Oh well, on the positive side I now have the perfect excuse to go shoe shopping in the summer break before I come! London has lots and lots of lovely shoes!! :-)

You can find all skincare brands here. I am not that sure about Aveda though, mainly because I never use it so I don't pay attention to it's presence or absence, but everything else you listed is available.

Now with regards to shoes - it's a sad situation. I could never buy shoes in Doha!
