LOSING OLYMPICS- the real reason

mufy
By mufy

people here came out with a million reasons. but heres what i think is the right answer. please travel to industrial area, look at the roads. olympic committee people mite have travelled thru this and felt annoyed. there wer better roads in 1940s.. the roads there really suck. its all bumps n potholes. what a great signs for a developing qatar. please dont go in cars or jeeps. hire trailors or trucks.. i ve been to some parts in street 15 and 16 today. i am going back with a crain to get my car back. welcome come qatar.

well if they had six years to get it togther for the asian games ,how would they cope with the olympics in 8yrs? , i went to the opening ceremoney and the roads around the stadium and (still not fixed)they still have those fishing rod like lights along by the road not installed, Qatar has to plan of a lot more , they should start with smaller events and work their way up (F1 , major tennis events , extreme games espn etc , and make the place more attractive to tourist fix the beaches etc the list goes on and on , all depends on where Qatar want to be in 10 years.....

Not every one wants to go to a hotel to have a drink, infact i despise the fact that just to have a drink with a meal when i am out requires me to go to a hotel. I love buffulo wings, which yes you can get at TGIF's and chilli's but were i am from TGIF's and chilli's i can also get a half decent Magarita to wash them down with.

Ramadan is one of the other reasons i would say, most athaletes would be here at least two months before to train and aclimitise something most would not be able to do during ramadan as you can't even eat in your car. these are things that Qatar has too address. It is all well and good as I said before for those who are living here on a semi permenant basis we are used to this and we try our best to "do as the Romans do" but we are not talking about living here we are talking about an event that includes every country in the world that will bring people here for a minimum stay of 2 weeks people who really don't give a flying F*&^ about religion they are here to watch some of the best athaletes in the world compete against each other and to have a bit of fun. I know i saw this in sydney the exitment the celebrations of your country winning a medel. We are not talking of other M.E countries we are talking of Qatar this is were the epicentre will be not the U.A.E., not Barain but Qatar.

Koko I wasn't just talking about pork I was also talking about restrictions on the selling of alcohol. No ME country allows alcohol in their stadiums. As for when in Rome do as the Romans do, that's great if you're a tourist or an expat, but if your an international Olympic Committe deciding where do put a multi billion dollar games and hundreds of thousands of people, when in Rome doesn't really fly.

Mis-Cat.. yes it is true that this what they would like to do... but imagine the foods are not part of their daily diet... but it isn't against their religion... think about ramadan.. you see the population here is not totally muslim.. but we have to bare with the rules and wait for resturants to open, even tourists...

Live in Rome, do as the Romans do!!! This is their country and you never know.. maybe they will allow other resturants to have alcohol.. there was a lot of talk about places (like Bennigans) getting the liscence for the Asian games,. but it didn't happen.. but maybe for the olympics it would...

What i am trying to say is that food and drink are not all the reasons not to give someone an event like the olympics...

And Gypsy.. have you visited other ME countries??? If you had.. you wouldn't have said the whole ME has to realize this!!!

Just because you are a westerner that doesn't like pork doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't. Alot of asian countries have a diet that does include alot of pork product not to mention european countries as well. It's the same with the alcohol issue, while we live here on semi permenant basis these are things we just accept most of us have a permit to buy alcohol from QDC and access to the bars, but from a tourist point of view if you are coming here for a celebration, which is what most people do for the olympics, trust me i lived through the Sydney games and worked in hospitalitym, most who dont get tickets for some of the major events will seek out the local watering hole, or buy some booze for home and watch it on the T.V. do not forget a majority of the people that will be here weather in an official capacity or just here to watch the games are used to just popping down to the local bottle shop to pick something up.

I agree with MisCat and Gypsy. I don't see how the October timing could have been so much of a problem to the IOC, especially as the Olympics have been held in October previously. And as Doha came joint third for the criteria discussed in the official IOC report I can only assume that they were rejected for other reasons not covered by the report.

Too true MisCat, I think the lack of basic cultural amemnities is a big reason, it's the same reason they won't get the 2018 World Cup. Qatar has to realize (hell the whole ME has to realize) that no pork and no booze means no big sporting events.

The IOC just used the excuse of the date of the olympics to be held in Qatar as a way of letting Qatar down easy. While Qatar will more than likly have most of the ifrustructure (if this be the case) needed to cope with the incoming influx of tourists for the games, there are certain issues that will need to be adressed such as the availability of alcohol the availabilty of pork products ect.ect. The truth is over 50% of the countries that will be competing in the games are not muslim countries so these things will be an issue not just for the atheletes but the people that come here to support them, to give you and idea last night I was watch "Anthony Bourdin's No Reservation" he was in Korea, Almost every meal he ate had some kind of pok product and was always accompanied by rice whisky or beer. No while it is true to say this is not how they always eat, but this is the way they eat when entertaining and always for most special occasains and this is just one country, there will be an extreme amount of others. The same will apply if they want to try for the world cup, again the majority of the countries that will be represented are not muslim and Qatar will have to be ready to accommodate.

koko37 - the window for holding the Summer Olympics, as set by the IOC, is 15 July to 31 August, so I think a December Olympics is out of the question.

Qatar requested to hold them October due to the hot weather, as they are allowed to do according to the IOC conditions, but the IOC decided that it was unacceptable to hold them in October in this case (or they at least used this as the excuse for rejecting Qatar's bid - since they've previous Olympics have been held in October).

I agree with TweetyBird regarding the fact that the bid for October was too difficult for the IOC, but not for the televised reception. Most sports federations are working and in deep games by that time, so it would've been out of the question to host the olympics then. But there is a chance to host the olympics in December, as that's when all federations are off and no reall big games are in play.

As for the Indus' roads, what rubbish is that??? Do you think every country in the world has the best roads everywhere you go??? Of course not!!! These bad roads are caused because of heavy vehicles, and not from the government. Yes, they need to do something about it... but regarding the olympics... PLEASE.... don't fool yourself... They got the Asian Olympics with the same roads... Dahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Regarding Terrorism.... Now there is something to talk about.... Spain is the first on the list for Terrorism... FARC and all the others are so against Spain right now and there are more chances of something happening there than anywhere else in the world.... Chicago.. the windy city... US will probably be the worst place to host the olympics in the summer... No airconditioning... busier roads... and again prone to self destruction... (internal terrorism.. external terrorism, etc...)

Tokyo... Look at China at the moment... suffering from Earthquakes.. erupting volcanos.. Tibet... Expense city.. should I say more???? You think Tokyo is better????

Rio .. probably the best pick... but technically the worst according to the IOC... Hot & Humid in the summer... what the heck...

If you ask me... there is nothing stopping Qatar from being awarded the Olympics except for Politics from the European Side of matters... Money for sure is no problem... Qatar would've spent the most money... Infrastructure.. everyone is thinking of todays infrastructure.. a lot can happen in 8 years... terrorism.. more likely to happen out of the middle east than in the middle east!!

Well, tweety, i'm a bit confused here.If IOC feels that

"it will lose valuable advertising because it will be difficult to compete for a decent share of the televised market because of the major professional sports that are traditionally broadcast in October.", why wud they insist on having it in October.

N yeah, u r right, I do disagree abt the cold hard cash part :). I do not believe that would ever come in Qatar's way of hosting Olympics.

Maybe just maybe the IOC meant what they said - Doha was eliminated because of the desire to hold the olympics in October. Maybe the IOC feels that it will lose valuable advertising because it will be difficult to compete for a decent share of the televised market because of the major professional sports that are traditionally broadcast in October.

I don't for second believe that Doha's alleged need for better infrastructure/number of hotel rooms were the reason - if that were the case they would not have made it as far as they did. Neither do I buy into the terrorism issue. I think recent history proves that occurs EVERYWHERE and any city hosting the Olympics will have to deal with it.

I really do believe it is cold, hard cash that is the cause. Of course I am sure there will be those who disagree. :)

Agree with mufy on the state of roads in the industrial area...they r quite primitive, but dont know how much of that was a cause for being denied the 2016.

I believe, what Qatar has been trying to sell was its 'ability' to host the olympics. May be if they had sold 'Qatar' as a destination, a place to be, as a place that can live the age old spirit of Olympics.... I do not know how much was done in those lines.

Also, one cannot focus the development of infrastructure on one particular event, no matter how great the event is. Events will come and go but what comes after is as impotant. Once the 'sustainable development ' of infrastructure is well on its way ,as a part of an overall plan for the region, I believe that 'summers' wont come in the way of Qatar's dream to host the Olympics. lets look forward for 2020/2024.

As for terrorism, I do not believe any part of the world can be immune to the threat.

mufy - I really doubt the industrial area had much to do with Doha not getting the Olympics.

fieryangelinthesky - Qatar will have 80,000 hotel rooms by 2016, so that was not a reason. Doha was rated 3rd for infrastructure so the IOC weren't worried about the mobility issue either. Read the full IOC report.

The reason given for the rejection was that Doha wanted the games to be held in October though there were probably a few other undisclosed reasons too, but not those mentioned here (well, perhaps #3 on fieryangelinthesky's list, but unlikely as almost all major cities face that threat now).

the real reasons were:

1.) International Olympic Committee (IOC) requires at least 45,000 hotel accommodations for visitors, currently Qatar has 18,000 only.

2.) Mobility - IOC found out that Qatar has few taxi and busses. It lacks railway transit and so on...

3.) There's a terrorist threat from Al Q**da
