Long-time residents can seek citizenship: Official
Web posted at: 6/5/2006 7:10:14
Source ::: The Peninsula Doha • Expatriates residing in Qatar for 25 years and having sufficient knowledge of the Arabic language can apply for Qatari citizenship, a senior public security official told a local Arabic daily yesterday.

Brigadier Ahmed Hussein Al Haik, Deputy Director of Public Security, told the daily in an interview that the law regulating Qatari nationality specified four major conditions for an expatriate resident in Qatar to apply for citizenship. Article 2 of Law No 38 of 2005 specifies that a resident should be based here for 25 years with gaps not exceeding six months to be eligible to apply for Qatari citizenship. In case the gap is more than six months, the Minister of Interior has the authority to waive it.

The other condition is that an applicant enjoys a good reputation and has not been convicted for any crime whether in Qatar or the country or his origin.

He should have a reasonably good standard of living and should possess sufficient knowledge of the Arabic language, said the official. However, priority is to be given to applicants whose mothers are Qatari nationals, he added.

So there is no need to waste your time trying to find out where and how to apply. It's not happening even for the stateless people.

25 years???...in this sad excuse for a place???...you'd be lucky to be alive by then let alone citizenship & why oh why would one want to give up citizenship of their home countries for this???...it's not like a Qatari passport has any great value anywhere on the planet...half the world doesn't even know it exists...this move is targeted @ a certain section of residents here, who are mostly stateless or have travel documents but no passports, makes sense for them, sure as hell doesn't for anyone else...

I know a Palestinian family of 10 who paid a total of over 15,000 QR to get their citizenship and passports. They have been here for over 30 years and all but 1 of their children were born here. Both parents have been teachers in Qatar until retirement. They speak Arabic and have a spotless police record, not to mention that 4 of their 6 daughters have graduated from Education City universities, 2 are now pursuing PhD and Masters in UK, and one is presently a student at CMU-Q (in Education City).

Don't waste your breath or your money waiting for citizenship, Wiked :-)
