sticking out like a soar thumbs is sometimes a good thing.  It took me a while to get used to it in Spain, but eventually I turned the negative into a positive and even found work from sticking out.  Embrace it! ; )

I don't notice the staring - perhaps I am too old and unattractive to be stared at :-)

As for how we got here - he was asked to come - he actually took less pay but as you know - things are tough in the UK and it gave us an opportunity as a family to be financially secure for a few years and see another part of the world. The less pay thing is not a 'boo -hoo' moan. Our decision was simply a pragmatic approach. Stay in the UK and struggle like hell and may be out of a job or come here and be secure with a little less money - no brainer really, and for that we are grateful.

As for it having anything to do with my Father and Uncle- I suppose it did have a bearing on it - my father spoke highly of the Arabs he met when he was serving in this part of the world. He found them to be very proud, hardworking people who showed him great kindness.

As for you speaking your mind - you do have that right - I also have the right to find it bloody annoying - as you do off my ramblings :-)

Ya!!! staring - the main hobby n entertainment of some ... wat to do... only solution is ignore.... during early years many women had the same feeling as urs(me too hated like hell)... gradually learnd to ignore n dont care at all...

lol she just got owned.Not but Angelina does have a point.. I am a guy and I get stared at when i go out. sometimes random people ask me to be in a picture with them.. It is a culture and you are mostly talking about people who come from places where they never seen anyone but their family and few friends.

Don't get to up ur own backside luv....these men stare at anything....cats,dogs,cars.......men,women,children......Its not about looks...

Just don't whip off those spandex shorts in the middle of the mall! On the other hand it might just temparaily blind the starers.  :P

jayca, It was a joke on her...btw, there are some serious social reasons why men stare at women here..what do you expect of asian construction workers here who have made the men-women ratio as skewed as 7:1 and the poor guys living in the camps around the town don't even get to see a lady for days together and only get to go home once in 2 years. Moreover, these workers don't bother much about manners and etiquette..

I advise all such people to wear dark glasses and learn some subtlety while staring..guess such stares won't melt delicate blondes like her..

We don't have many blondes in Qatar, if you are one, you will be stared at :-/

@DK - I am no blonde, but i still get those stares :P Women are more of like new species to men here.... i guess they hardly seen women who dressed differently as to what they used to see for a long time. I used to look at men in thobes when i first arrived here, because its a new sight for me, but now i dont even bother to look at them as i get used of the sight :P So take your time, you will get used to it ;)

As usual - you bring into the debate, bitterness and hatred with regards QATAR.   I am asking you this as somebody that does want to understand what the hell you are about!   Why are you here?   You have said so many times you are 'over qualified to be in Qatar' - check your posts - you have also said ' you could earn more in India.   You hate Qatar. You call it a 'shit hole'.   You seem to 'hate' everything about Qatar.   Why did you come here?   You say - you know about Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Oman....so you do research (allegedly).   So how come somebody as intelligent and worldly wise as you and knowing the Arabic world as you ended up in Qatar? @ thatgirl, how dare you say something negative about this town?. shame on you,coming here earning your tax-free salary & complaining about minor issues like people staring @ you all the time,...is FYI what you may have to deal with by posting this!...HOWEVER,the fact of the matter is this,the gender ratio(as you may have noticed is SEVERELY skewered in this town,for obvious reasons) & it attempts a fine balancing act @ TRYING to potray an image of being "open-minded" while maintaining it's "conservative cultural" nature,not the easiest of tasks & it isn't really working for them...even now,visas for young,single women are amongst the hardest to get here,up until less than a decade ago,they were almost unheard of,except for mass Asian recruiting as service staff in hotels & restaurants. They're big on the "family town" theme,happily married(or not as long as you don't exhibit any 'dislike' in public),middle aged,with a bunch of kids ranging in age from toddlers to teens is what rocks their boat...add to that the fact that there are so many single(including those married but living/working here alone) men in this town with sweet f*^kall to do & there you have it...STARE...!!! you'll get used to it...or you'll get fed up with it & leave...either way,goodluck :)...

I hate people that stare, but I have to admit to being a people watcher.  The difference is I'm not staring, and if I am... it's from a safe staring distance.  LOL!  I have friends that go out and just stare at women, and it makes me feel uncomfortable, so i could only imagine how the women could feel.  People who stare at me get stared back twice as hard and a mean look.

Look the stares you get are generally normal here, it's people in general they look at, whether you are driving a nice car, your kids are playing around you.. Honestly some people here havent seen their own kids EVER..

I had someone break down in tears and wanted a photo woth my kids, they missed their own sooo much. Yes women get a little more attention overall, you will eventually not notice it anymore over time.

If however ANYONE approaches you, you have the power to have them arrested by a police officer so no one will dare. Harrasement hear is taken extremely seriously if you feel someone has violated you in any way shape or form, whether this is following you in their car, approach you with their number, look at you in the wrong manner etc.

Qatar unfortunately has a lot of men working here without their wives and havent seen them for a long time, so there has to be be just a little bit of understanding from your part... And like I said before they will dissappear from your radar eventually. 

Start getting used to it.. They will become invisible for you in 2-3 years of living in Doha..

ignore it as others have said. If youre planning to stay long, you have to start getting used to people staring at you. ;)
