I have always been taught I should give kindness freely, and regardless of this I also happen to believe it to be true. Also that I should not brag about it or discuss it with others.
My Mother taught me that common courtesy is free; experience has taught me that common courtesy is a sure sign of refinement.
..but also as a trained First Aider I am reticent to put my self in the firing line helping strangers who may (or their families) take me to court afterwards.
In many countries there is a law protecting First Responders from this. Here and in the UAE that law does not exist, in fact if the person dies and you where the last person to touch them you had better have a good lawyer.
And also you had better hope that should you have a heart attack in the street that a medical professional with insurance and lawyers behind him is within shouting distance.
It might have been simple to you but as a mom I can tell you what you did propably meant a lot to both the child and his/her parents, May Allah reward you immensely..Aameen!

Like when my daughter and I first joined my husband in Qatar we had no car for many months and lived no where near any shop(a very interior neighbourhood in Gharafa). Yet whenever we attempted to walk it to get essentials, every single time, kind Arabs in LCs will always always give us lifts to and fro. Such acts of kindness constantly remain etched in our minds and inspires us to do the same which is actually one of the best results of doing good to others. Like an on going charity it will motivate another to do unto others the same what was done for them,Inshallah!
We cant neglect to those needy people.We even feel pity for an animal,how much more to humans.But,now adays we also must to wary or cautious to anybody in giving our kindness heart for this could be a trick and others will take advantage of what we are capable to.If you do kindness to others never look back for in return.Being a GOOD SAMARITAN IS GREAT.
Once i was traveling by train in Iran. A man came in began a speech “Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen! Bla bla bla” I thought he is asking money but instead of asking for money outright, he held up a white plastic bag and offered sandwiches to any homeless, hungry people on the train that day. If anyone wished to donate to his sandwich distribution cause, he added, he would be happy to accept cash. No one asked for a sandwich. But as the man paced the car, half a dozen women dug into their purses and handed him money. Genius. After all, who knows if he was actually soliciting money for the homeless, or if he was homeless himself?

One of my colleague and his brother requested me to apply for bachelor accommodation in same room they living because they don't want a 3rd person in the room because I was living with my family.After 4 years a friend of the same brothers came on visit, was looking for job and don't have place to stay, they requested me that if he can live in the same room in my place until he get any job.He was stranger for me but I agreed, after 3 months he got job in same department, and applied for accommodation in the same building and write a note with his application about me " that this person is not living in his accommodation for many years, and requested the same room " and he got it and I got GPL from accommodation.
Back home.. once I met a girl during a four hour train journey and after few days she ended up living in our house for three months..thanks to my Mom's kindness..:)
sanity spot on mate, it all depends on what type of kindness. Sometimes you go out of your way to accommodate and help people who don't even look back let alone say thank you after they get what they want!

if a stranger is in danger - i will not think anything else other than saving him/her first but with some precautionary measures. In normal case it depends what kind of help they are asking for and what kind of support I can offer for them.In some situations we just show our kindness as the ethical motives engerize us all of a sudden like once I picked up some magazines that a man knocked off the shop counter, but he didnt say thanks. In fact he stood and watched me do it. But I couldnt have left them on the floor and stepped over them.If someobody is asking for a fovor which involves mine and his/her private life we have think and do research before showing our kindness.Normally in daily life it is good to help strangers like Yes, I gave up my chair in the doctor's waiting room so a mother and her two daughters could sit together.
I was so kind to one stanger when he was trying to get inside my neighbours house in the night for burglary - I gave him a torch, keys to open the door and guided him to the way to the Locker....:(
