To Kill with Honor - (In this modern times?)

Police say Jordanian man stabs sister in honour killing

Amman: A Jordanian police official said a 24-year-old farmer has stabbed his sister to death with a dagger to cleanse the family's honour.

The official says the man turned himself in and confessed to killing his 27-year-old sister because he heard rumors she was dating a man.

The official said he was charged with murder.

The official also said an autopsy showed the victim, who was 27 years old, was four weeks pregnant.

In some conservative areas of the Middle East, people generally disapprove of an unwed woman having any relationship with an unrelated man and consider it to reflect negatively on her family.

Modern times to us, but to them -- you should visit their places. They aren't were we are in life. Stop judging others based on your mentality. It isn't fair. I am not saying that what he did was right, but that is just how things are. The US was like that. Turkey is like that too.

Modernism has nothing to do with such ignorant A****LES. They must be eliminated from the face of earth

.

Such killings are only very much common among ILLITERATE people regardless of religion or location too. Most of them belongs to MIDDLE EAST, EAST ASIAN CONTINENT.

.

As far as i know, No religion allows any person to kill other person except for SELF DEFENCE. Any other escuse or reason is a GREAT SIN.

.

Also, such men are very much egoistic about their manism or dignity in their community/village. They fear of teasing from other relatives or neighbours in their society. That's why they take such wrong step. SOCIETY is equally responsible along with the killer for these crimes. The thinking of such societies must be changed.

How can someone kill his own sister?

"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.

it is more to do with over conservative barbarian local traditions.

Killings our own siblings is the height of ignorance and stupidity, in whatever name you call.

What is modern time is to do? change the attitude, I doubt.

So this thread, I will remain silent

Same in UK, with female circumcision especially among women from Africa.

Funny enough the Honour also extends to our British Royal Family, They will only marry within their circles, do any thing against the norms and you could be abdicated..:)

As you said... Culture plays a big part in many people's lives. this is true for first / second generation immigrants to the "West". They try to keep their culture from being dilute by the west and end up committing crimes in the process.

By labda06• 12 Jul 2009 08:45
labda06

Female circumcision? Is it also primarily amongst the immigrant population?

FGM-female genital mutilation which is EXACTLY what it is, absolute / partial mutilation. Heavily condemned but hey some cultures stick to what their forefathers have handed down. Culture, primitive or not, is a powerful thing, hey?!

Yup. We also have a problem with female circumcision now. :(

Not neccessarily, in the case in Canada & Germany it's related to immigrants coming from the Middle East.

By GodFather.• 12 Jul 2009 08:17
GodFather.

It is about Culture and how one is bought up in a society. Funny thing about committing such a crime that the culprit does not feel any shame but is proud of what he has done.

It is difficult to compare the West, as the morale of the West and East are completely different.

Like Brit Expat above mentioned the Honour killing in the West will be more associated with Criminal Gangs.

Mmmmmmm, like I said, it's a stretch.

Yup, Germany has a big problem with it among the Turkish population & there's been cases in the UK, Canada and the US.

Gypsy, you could argue that the shame of having a sister/daughter impregnated out of wedlock would cause depression and stress though? The Western society wouldnt tolerate that, but in a way isnt it all apples and oranges. You have honour killings now, seriously?

Alexa, it's an interesting twist though. The honour killing in the Arab world discussion has been beaten black and blue and I was kind of looking at things from a different angle. Plus Umm mentioned Kenya...:)

By Gypsy• 12 Jul 2009 08:00

I think comparing the murder-suicides in the West to honour killings is a biiittt of a stretch labda. As those are more related to nervous break-downs, depression & stress then pride. (still doesn't make it better). We have honour killings in the West now anyway. :(

By mjamille28• 12 Jul 2009 07:38
mjamille28

crap,.. where is the honour in that..

By labda06• 12 Jul 2009 07:34
labda06

You might even argue that some of the recent murder-suicides in the "West" due to the hard economic times are done in the name of honour. For the head of the family to somehow rid his family of the shame associated with being in debt.

Umm-salayum, the burning of women in Kenya is not as common as you make it out. It happens quite rarely actually and in this case was immediately condemned by the entire society and the perpetrators brought to justice.

Well Miss X that is just stupid, foolish dumb ppl.

In Africa I forgot where , they kill their own kids because they believe they are devils,or kick them out on the streets , In Kenya they burn woman alive because they believe they are witches....OK just plain foolish stuff.

the world is going crazy :(

I once watched on the internet a 17 year old Yezidi girl being stoned to death in public for falling in love with a boy who was Sunni.

The irony: Hundreds of people gathered around using video camera's on their phones to video it and broadcast it to the world, and the stoning death of a young girl. They have access to the most up-to-date technology in the world, and yet still practice such primitive forms of murder in the name of honour.

but in different country:

Protest at Saudi ‘honour’ killing

AFP/Riyadh

A Saudi women’s group yesterday blamed the country’s religious police in the “honour” killing of two sisters shot dead by their own brother after they were arrested for mixing with unrelated men.

The Society for Defending Women’s Rights in Saudi Arabia said the religious police had placed the sisters’ lives in danger when they arrested them and then placed them in a Riyadh women’s shelter.

The two women, identified as Reem, 21, and Nouf, 19, were murdered after they left the shelter on July 5.

The brother shot them in the presence of their father who, according to newspaper reports, quickly forgave the son for defending the family’s honour.

i bet he was the one who inpregnated her and wants to hide his incest now that she's preggo.

i may be fast judging, irrational and maybe racist, but i strongly tend to have a prejudice on all these f***ing so-called honor crimes. the poor girl. raped by her brother and then killed by him!

You are right. It is more to do with Culture and Tradition , than religion. Religion plays no part in this..

"Dishonour" is an excuse used all over the place in all societies. There are daily cases of gang members killing adversaries and innocent bystanders becaused they looked at them wrongly or "Dissed them"..

Sad reflection on society.

Tradition or not. Something inside must tell a human that killing is tabu. No need for a religion to tell him that. It's the tradition or religion which overrides this basic human feeling.

and completely uncivilized behavour.

I do not understand why these men are completely pre-occupied with restricting the sexual behaviour and lives of the women in their society, while the men are, in fact,, always trying to have sex with any woman they can get it off of.

Hypocracy raises its head again.

Perhaps these men equate sex with going to the bathroom.

Poor souls who will be forever lost.
