Two jailed for accident that killed minister

Source ::: THE PENINSULA

DOHA: A higher criminal court here sentenced two young men to jail on Monday after they were found guilty of causing a road accident in which the then minister of business and trade, Sheikh Fahad bin Jassem Al Thani, was killed in May 2008.

The court, with the panel of judges headed by Nasser bin Mohamed Al Dosri, sentenced one of the convicts to three years in prison and the other to two years.

Sheikh Fahad was heading home with a friend. The latter suffered serious injuries in the accident but survived.

The mishap took place on the Doha-Al Wakra highway around midnight when one of the two four-wheelers involved in daredevilry and racing on the highway hit the minister’s car, injuring him.

The Public Prosecution had slapped nine charges on the duo which included manslaughter, reckless driving, breaking the speed limit and violating the traffic law and injuring two people.

The convicts have also been ordered by the court to organise blood money with help from the companies with which their cars were insured so the money could be handed over to the kith and kin of the late minister.

A witness had appeared in the case, against whom the defence had raised an objection, saying he was not in a proper mental state. The court had ordered Hamad Medical Corporation to produce his medical file and report on the mental fitness of the witness.

Theres always a set of law practiced by different countries to try criminals and obviously driving incidences as what happens here. In this case, Qatar law can justify that 3 years is sufficient enough for driving-manslaughter. In any other country, it would have been a life sentence.

Was the young minister who died any way related to the Foreign Minister?

they still kinda got away with it coz it's only 2 years and 3 years imprisonment.. sadly, no amount of punishment or blood money can bring back the life that they took away..:/

3 years for killing a Sheikh? Wonder if it was an expat what would have happened. Deport all expats belonging to that nationality? I dont see where justice has been served here...looks more like a topping of stupidity served on a plate of bullsheet!

According to the Gulf Times:

"After receiving the court ruling, the defendants’ lawyers said that they intended to appeal within 15 days."

What are the odds that the sentences will be reduced on appeal, and then suspended altogether.

Justice Served... that'll be the day. Even 3 years is a joke for killing a man.

I beleive it was this accident was partly to blame for all the restriction of clubs and bars, as the accused were said to be under the influence?
