Just got a call from HQ
Friends..Where do I want to live!? I have to decide today...They gave me a few suggestions of compounds? I'm not living in a compound with other Americans! I want to experience the local culture, I want qatarian neighbors, not Bob and his family from Toledo- What kind of experience would that be? I told them I need a place with at least one room with hardwood floors and high ceilings because I need an indoor basketball court.
The Bull can still dunk it at 50
Btw- I get a 20,000 riyals (+utilities) housing allowance, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
No "Compounds" please
Friends in high places..Check you buddy requests Azilana

Now that were on the subject of restroom stalls..
LAX, 1980 something, 5am for a 6am departure. Nobody on the concourse and here comes Ned Beatty. He goes into the restroom and I follow. He played a part in a popular movie called Deliverance 10 years previous. I do impersonations so sincerely, I thought he might enjoy one of them. He's in a stall with his pants on the ground and I start my hillbilly impersonation: "Why you look like a big ole hog bowey!".. His little legs start kicking and I hear him say "why you son of a bi****!". Yikes! I run from the restroom and quickly take a seat in the gate area...Ned Beatty storms out of the restroom and up to the podium accusing one of the gate agents of something..I also hear him say "who just came out of that restroom!?"..I was far away but I heard him yell something about "I'm an actor and a dam good one..blah..blah..blah!" He went berserk!
I was laughing so hard tears were comin out my eyes
I was just telling. Villa gone/rented....and I got myself an invitation for the housewarming...nice :)

Do you need someone to accompany you there?

Je suis excité...lol
Sadly...I feel I may have fallen out of favor with her
I always said Id rather be hated for what I am than loved for what i am not, but I can't help but feel I should have pretended to be a better person in this case.
Did you buy your ticket yes, consider fully refundable option, Mandi is going in negative mode, and that is not good for you, or anyone.
I'm just glad to hear that men don't "socialize" in the restrooms there. When I go into a public restroom here I practically run in there holding my breath, do my business (I only urinate in public restrooms) and get out as fast as I can. Yesterday at Fossil Trace I go into the restroom and it stunk, I mean it stunk bad. Some guy is camped out in a stall reading something because I heard papers shuffling. He was perfectly happy in there. I don't get it
This IS the Gulf. When I was in Muscat I drove myself crazy looking for a set of flatware (cutlery) that matched. Or a set of 8 glasses that matched. You can't always get what you want here! (Sorry, Madam, finished!) That's why people hoard the strangest things! One day it's available, the next it's not. Thank God Lulu and Carrefour finally reached Oman. But even Lulu and Carrefour in Doha are not reliable. (Remember no chicken? The veg department being closed for how many months?) And don't get me started on bed sheets. No such thing as a standard size. Or the time seven out of my eight bathrooms had a plumbing problem and the guys sent to fix it had never seen a flush toilet before. Or when my ac spit ice cubes at me. Or when it takes 4 days to get an oil change from the car dealer here. Or when Land Rover road service took 2 hours to find me on Al Sadd street (I gave them the crossroad name.) Or when one of my light bulbs would just explode and shower glass all over the floor. Or the bidet would go kaBLAM and rain water all over. And we haven't even started on the driving ...
Mandi
Yeah, I was wonderering what kind of people I would meet in the restroom stall..I'm not familar with the culture so all kinds of disturbing thoughts crossed my mind there.
Thanks for the clarification Mimi
I'm just not interested in the property right now azilana and I won't be pressred or played into getting something I don't really want. Remember, i'm a salesman, the best salesman in the Western Region. These tactics won't work on me.
Lol, This thread has become a Instant Messenger... Mods pls close the PM, no need for it any more... :)
even if it has an outdoor jacuzzi...you can't afford it :P
it's 45,000QAR a month...and as we speak...it's now RENTED to the client (from yesterday)...merci becoup :P
ROFL...
Oh thank god
LOL. I was referring to the pool, gym and spa.
Oh, and if you're using "communal" facilities, it will give you a chance to meet people.
_______________________________________________
Wait a second!
This doesn't mean what I think it means does it? I will have my own bathroom won't I?
Oh, and if you're using "communal" facilities, it will give you a chance to meet people. Being in a stand alone villa you might find yourself feeling pretty isolated until you meet people.
Definitely until you get the "lay of the land" Doha can take a little getting used to. ;)
We lived halfway up the John Hancock building for a year before I bought my wife her first house, and it was great. Had a full grocery store on the 55th floor. It might be a nice change to go back to that for a little while
Where is my airport reply?
Well Bull, having lived in this region for quite a while I can definitely vouch for serviced suites over stand alone villas. Not only would you get everything you want and need in the suites (the facilities at the W being some of the best in Doha) but you don't have to take care, or find anyone, to take care of anything. Unlike if you were in your own villa.
Finding decent maintenance people here is like finding a needle in a haystack.
My in-laws used to live in a beautiful villa, with a gorgeous pool and BB-Q area, unfortunately they were never able to find anyone to take good care of the pool so they ended up having to do it all themselves (not a small task when it's 110 degrees + and you've got to garden).
As a bachelor I'm sure the last thing you want to do is spend your days maintaining your yard, pool, etc.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the Four Seasons apartments as well. The Four Seasons facilities are AMAZING!
I'll listen to you Mimi- You gave me good advice on the W Hotel and residential suites. They look like the height of class and sophistication so thats right up my alley..
Thanks again- The W may be a temporary solution
Bull, you don't want a hot tub under the sky, believe me! It's already in the 100's here now, if you sat in an outdoor hot tub you'd boil! Go for a chilled plunge pool instead!
But its a 29.5 inch ball.
Guys this is Jon A... the emotional story just fits his style perfectly.
Manna Pro... now please enlighten us which company you will be working for in Qatar and what will be your designation?
To be honest I am terribly disappointed by your dunking basket... it worth ony plastic ball playing... I would appreciate if you pictures would fit your talking style...
But keep the pace buddy... I love your style ;-)
"You can get a view of the sky, but we have only few days with blue skies daytime, and stars at night. Someone help me explain please."

I think you're trying to say that it's cloudy all the time?
You can get a view of the sky, but we have only few days with blue skies daytime, and stars at night. Someone help me explain please. So we can arrange for your hot tub under the sky, but no stars are guaranteed.
Is it too much to ask for a view of the sky?
Stars rarely show up in our sky here, but hot is plenty. I am afraid that your demands are getting extremely hard to meet.
Thats sound nice alzalia but I wanted the Hot tub outside under the stars- i'll keep it in mind if I can't find anything better. Mashala'hallah
Thanks
I just do office/admin work but the Boss allows me to assist "his" clients only, and this one is a dignitary...learned a few french words this afternoon too...whehehe
I think that's reasonable. Bull should only have to put in another 12,000/month. If you have this one or another one, I'd certainly vouch for your taste and honesty, Azi!
And its worth it.
The appliances are top of the line and the furnishings were ordered from France, UK and US.
I think our client would go for it, I overheard the client and his assistant talking about installing security gadgets and electronics in the place.
What is the price, Azi? It may be worth kicking in for.
Mandi
and those who knew who I work for, can attest...its no "BS"
And its in West Bay Area :)
3 Story, 5 bedroom + 1 maids room, fully furnished, high fenced, wide garden and with swimming pool.
The owners like to barbeque and host parties so they allotted a bbque area...let's see:
Stand alone 3-4 bedroom home --- check
Hot tub --- A jacuzzi in the master's bedroom
Pool with grilling /party area -- YES
Near Beach/Marina -- just across the West bay Lagoon
Near Clubs -- you could drive to Ritz & Grand Hyatt
Near major highway -- the road is a major road
Native village --- NOPE
Large garage w/workshop -- garage could fit 3 vehicles so you could convert it
One large room with high ceilings --- ground floor has high ceilings but no chandeliers...contemporary styled
Large Yard -- check
Privacy fence -- check
Home gym/sauna --- you could convert one of the rooms
Pizza oven --- just an oven/ can be upgraded
We went there with a client for viewing this afternoon and it was awesome...
PROBLEM IS...your allowance is not enough...SORRY :)
He is getting one of those jobs which you have to send them money first in order to issue the visa. Please do not delay payment, the faster you send the money the more your salary would be increased. I would expect that by the end of the month, your offer would reach QR 69,999 per month all included.
Manna Pro said Great news ...
Great news for everyone. I got them up to 33,261 riyals +utilities, and I figure I could comfortably kick in another 30,000 from my pocket bringing my total housing budget up to almost 50,000 riyals. Here are my requirements
So...
QR 33,261 + QR 30,000 = almost QR 50,000....tell me again...what do you do for a living???
oh ...I forgot..its a TYPO ...is it????
18 holes at Fossil Trace today...Its a money game- Loser pays green fee's and buys drinks and cigars at the 19th hole...
See you all later
Bull
Well...I guess I should be embarassed but, mine does. No Rebel flag though!
My pickup doesn't have a gun rack in the back window but it does have a Bowtech sticker there!
Mandi
Bull, you will not find everything you want in a home here in Qatar. Mostly you will find one or two of your requirements and the rest you will just have to make do.
Nom.... He did say he wanted to stay near locals.... how much more local can you get in Al Marri land.... he'd fit in perfectly since he strikes me as being a "shotgun in the window of the pick-up" type of guy;-p Pity he won't be able to own his own one, though..

Oh just shutup and kiss me right now Xena
I'd say a stand-alone villa in West Bay Lagoon or on the Pearl. They are large, over 3000 sq ft, and better built than many villas in Doha. There are amenities nearby. Our neighbors in West Bay Lagoon were mostly Qatari, with a few others being Czech, German and Chinese. We had a pool and a large garden and were on the water. Our Qatari next-door neighbor had peacocks. Oh, and by the way, the last time I helped an American woman negotiate 25% more salary she took me to dinner at Thai Snack when she came to Doha. :)

He thought he was finally gonna beat me- He's my kids friend and I've been playing him for years. I talk a lot of s*** on the court. I can be incredibly irritating.
I won $1000 against a guy golfing in Sedona Arizona last week..When I set up the game I was the nicest most personable guy on earth..He thought he was gonna have a nice day of golf....When I played him I didn't say one word, not one. I wore welding glasses and when he spoke I didn't even look towards him. I ignored him completely for 5 hours. That got in his head and he was a mess. He didn't know what was going on..He was very disturbed and he played like it. When there's money on the table, I don't F around.
Don't ever get into a war of wits with me- Cause you're gonna lose
I knew that Nomercie..I shoulda made that clear..I apologize
Bull, I just translated...never said you were.

Ok friends..A little background on the Bull... I'm not trailer trash...My grandfather owned the town of Greenville Florida- He owned the entire town, the mill where everyone worked, the general store, the hardware store, The barber shop, the hair salon, the gas station...Everything. He lost it all when my father was a boy. He lost it gambling, drinkin and skirt chasing..He lost it all and ran off with a woman. When my father was 17 he hitch hiked to FSU university, got a job at the gas station in Tallahassee and worked his way through school. He joined the Air Force and become a decorated officer flying f-86D's in Korea, and F-105's in Viet Nam, when we weren't officially in Viet Nam..he shot down many communist aircraft and killed a lot of people on the ground. While training at Perrin Air Force Base he met my mother, a Texas nurse with a 167 IQ. She didn't want to have anything to do with him, but he persisted and finally won her over. After 2 wars and 16 years into his service he got out with the help of a senator and took a job with a major airline- He eventually retired as a 777 captain. I grew up in Chicago in a nice home, but since he started the career so late we were never rich when I was a kid, in fact he was a DC-8 engineer for years and also worked part time at a hardware store for awhile to supplement the family income. I didn't grow up wealthy but he did show us the world..
I'm not white trash, never have been, never will be.

was it really a 3 or an OT...come on now, be honest.

Lets stay on topic friends- This has nothing to do with me or my transfer to Qatar

Bull, my husband won't care so much about winning a game...he's got me :P
Bull, am looking forward to a house warming party in your new abode!
You'll have to let my husband shoot a few hoops with you though
____________________________________________________
It'll be fun Nomercie, you have to watch though. I have to tell you that I never let anybody win. Correction: I never let any man or boy win. Even when my kids were 3 I played to win, and I'd win like 85-0. I can't count the number of times my boys have left the court crying while growing up. Eventually one kid started beating me last year, but he's 6-5 and plays everyday. I'm undefeated against the rest of the family. I played a neighborhood kid (22 years old) a few weeks ago and beat him 21-20 on a last second 3 pointer and he just walked away cursing..I heard him say "F-ing cheater!" under his breath..I just laughed and said "hey- nobody beats the bull kid.."
If you wanna make someone better at sports? You humiliate them on the field. All my kids dominated in sports at school..Not only were they the best at school, it wasn't even debatable- Everyone knew it- When one of my kids played football the entire crowd would chant his name and after the game parents would line up to shake his hand. They'd say stuff like "it was an honor to watch you play" lol..He'd just mumble something back..I'd always say "can you be a little nicer son"? and he'd just say, "they bother me"..
And yes- I have a half court in my house- We play while watching basketball and the Denver Nuggets play the Lakers tonight, so...I'm eating a light breakfest this morning. Grapefruit and 100% Kona coffee, hand imported from Hawaii
okay..thanks nomerci :-)

He went by a few other names too if I remember correctly.
Good summary MM.

Which made a pretty Qler post this:

Ahhhhh....a pizza oven...now my husband will be your BEST friend!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well lets look at his requirements:
Stand alone 3-4 bedroom home - Can find those anywhere.
Hot tub/Pool with grilling /party area - Possible, you'll just need to look around a bit. I know some lovely ones on Salwa Road, but not sure if there are any available.
Near Beach/Marina - West Bay is the only spot really.
Near Clubs - Unless you live in one of the hotels, you're always going to be about 20 minutes from a club.
Near major highway - The whole country can be crossed in 2 hours, so you're always near a "major highway"
Native village - no such thing
Large garage w/workshop - You could possibly turn an outdoor maids room or majilis into one, but you won't find a place with one already done.
One large room with high ceilings - it's called a living room or indoor majilis. Given their penchant for gawdy chandeliers here, it shouldn't be a problem.
Large Yard - you can get decent size but not large by North American standards.
Privacy fence - every stand alone house will have these.
Home gym/sauna - you'll have to install one yourself.
Pizza oven - install yourself.
Even though i stay in Wakra i dont recoomend you to even peep here...lols
the only thing good u will find here is 'Anytime Fitness Gym' where even when u get up from ur sleep in the night due to some nightmare u can rush and hit this gym...its open 24Hrs daily ! :)
Xena, I just came back from Muaither...defo not Bull territory...:P
Bull, am looking forward to a house warming party in your new abode!
You'll have to let my husband shoot a few hoops with you though.
away from Muaither and Wakrah... not sure the Al Marri's will be able to contend with the competition;-p
I am a little concerned now... that the Basketball basket is indoors...
and right on the ceiling... I would love to see you dunk one (at 50) into this basket...lol

I can't thank you enough
Here's a link to the W residences site:
http://www.whoteldoha.com/en/forms/residences
Thanks Mimi- You're the second or third person to recomend West Bay- Definatly going to look into it now
Actually, check the W apartments down in West Bay. They're furnished, stylish and you'll be living above some of the most happening bars in Doha.
I highly recommend waiting till you get to Doha before looking for a place. Not only will you be able to negotiate better but you'll get a better sense of where things like the Night Clubs, etc are located.
I always found that the best places weren't advertised and you had to go out and look for them. Call a few for rent numbers. etc.
oh ok, i too enjoy the company of womens but i hav few in my company but tats not wat i meant ! :)
I enjoy the company of women, but thats not what I meant. I mean just a lot of laughs with my new friends and co workers in Qatar.
Good morning 'once again' Manna pro !
You are most welcome to the State of Qatar and i am sure u gonna love the place.
"Little money"...naah, u gonna make a hell lot of money my friend ! :)
"Meet new people"....hmmm, you surely will- just refer all of your threads/posts and see ? :)
"Little fun along the way"...now i doubt wat kinda fun you reffering to ? :)
I see now..I didn't know where all the anger was coming from..They're afraid of me
Friends, theres no reason to fear me, i'm just coming to Qatar to establish a presence in the Middle east for my company, make a little money, meet new people and maybe have a little fun along the way..
I come in peace
You earned 170 QL points in 1 week, you are a major threat to many QL addicts. That's why they are discouraging you from coming to Qatar, please come, sales of something will definitely increase.
That looks like one big run on sentence Prism- I think I know what you are trying to say, but honestly i'm not completely sure.
Hey Nando...I scrolled back through the thread and I couldn't find the post where someone asked for your opinion on this?
indeed. And wonder what's next?
BTW, Bull, what are you selling?
Absolutely not..I work to live, I don't live to work.
So, the question still not answered
So, the question still not answered

Are you going to work on Sundays in Qatar ??
Near Clubs: This one is hilarious! LOOOL
Near major highway: Yes the Industrial area has major highways.
Native village:. How about Souq Waqef?
Atleast people who are sympathetic or are responding with great care and concern on this or like threads from the OP in the last few days would not frown on anyone else who comes asking questions related to their move however repetitive or idiotic they may sound or about their personal life including the failed love stories. But going by the track record of some I guess they would as usual still be doing otherwise, shamelessly.
Honestly, I havent seen QL hitting such low for sometime now.
You aren't going to get a villa in a Qatari neighborhood for 20,000/month. That's way low for anything but a 2 bedroom apartment at the Pearl. 3,000 sq foot we're talking 30,000/month and up. Our assistant professors are living in nice 2 bedroom high rise apartments for about 20,000. What they call stand-alone villas (not condos in a compound) can easily run 40,000 and above. Honey, you been low-balled!

you said you want to live in qatarian neighbourhood... then Pearl is a wrong place... Go to Al Shahaniya.

Husbands ALWAYS have problems with me..
Always
My best friends wife left him a few weeks ago and he blamed me- He said "and your s*** didn't help matters either"...Still trying to figure out what that meant. I always used to tell him to take better care of his wife right in front of her..I was just kidding? Never mind the fact that he was an angry drunk 5 nites a week, that had nothing to do with her leaving- It was me!
Jeeez
Habibi, you are most welcome to my humble abode. And my husband never worries about other men when it comes to me...he might feel sorry for them, but worry? Never.
All is good! :)
20 K is in the ballpark for a single guy, nothing to worry about. You can get something decent ( as decent as it gets over here) for that amount.
Not what you are looking for though :P
You gonna invite me over? I'll bring a woman with me so your husband doesn't get upset or worry about me makin moves on you
for such a smart salesman the pay is so low.....

Anyhow, I do somewhat see your point...my little oasis is my garden...very unique, peaceful and beautiful :)
Can't wait to hear what you think once you are actually here. ;)

Yes Nomercie..I need a nice place to retreat to. A place to escape the madness, a little slice (at least 3000 sq ft.) of America right in the middle of the middle east.
Thats what i'm lookin for
Bull, so do I. Never the less, when it comes to actually living somewhere, I do have a certain standard and expectations.I like to be comfortable.
MP how many Photobucket accounts do you have?
for such a smart salesman the pay is so low.....
Btw...if I were you I would not scrap the compound...

I travel a lot Nomercie, and we never go on tour buses, organized tours, cruise ships, or anything like that. We always either rent a car or use the local transportation systems. We immerse ourselves in the local cultures, we never insulate ourselves from it. When we go to Mexico, South America, or the South Pacific island we break bread with the natives, not other well healed travelers at the hotel..Thats what I'm all about and I don't care how dirty or dangerious it is

Any time.
Thanks Nomercie...The Penthouse at the Pearl sounds nice..I'm gonna run that by them before I go golfing...I'll let them stew on that all day then if I appear willing to accept something less, they'll be more agreeable. Thanks for the help
Bull, sorry, no idea about apartment living...am an all compound girl.
Btw...if I were you I would not scrap the compound...my nearest neighbors are Indian, Lebanese, Colombian and European...no Yanks as far as the eye can see.;)
Oh, there are a few Qataris here too.
Plus, maintenance is a breeze...not so in the apartments.
AND you don't need a car to meet people.
Anyway, just sayin'.
crap. The sooner the Mods act the better.
I have never heard as much crap since the yanks tried to justify the rescue of hostages from Iran with the air filters taken off the choppers in sandstorm season. A few red faced Texans that day ;)
Penthouse at The Pearl...pity your allowance is not enough for that.
Local neighbours....West Bay lagoon

I just left a message letting them know I might need a little more $...Whats a good figure sweetheart? I knew they'd try to screw me, f-ing cheapskates!
Maybe we can have some installed after I get in there Nomercie- Its absolutely essential
I also require a Hot Tub ..Size Xtra large
Thanks again friends
You won't find hardwood floors here though...at all. It's all tile or concrete.
Penthouse at The Pearl...pity your allowance is not enough for that.
Local neighbours....West Bay lagoon.
Also I wanna be close to the night life, and being right on a busy street doesn't bother me at all..I'll be buying a boat (thats what i'm all about) so being close to a marina is also important.
Thanks friends.
