Friends..Where do I want to live!? I have to decide today...They gave me a few suggestions of compounds? I'm not living in a compound with other Americans! I want to experience the local culture, I want qatarian neighbors, not Bob and his family from Toledo- What kind of experience would that be? I told them I need a place with at least one room with hardwood floors and high ceilings because I need an indoor basketball court.

The Bull can still dunk it at 50

Btw- I get a 20,000 riyals (+utilities) housing allowance, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

No "Compounds" please

Now that were on the subject of restroom stalls..

LAX, 1980 something, 5am for a 6am departure. Nobody on the concourse and here comes Ned Beatty. He goes into the restroom and I follow. He played a part in a popular movie called Deliverance 10 years previous. I do impersonations so sincerely, I thought he might enjoy one of them. He's in a stall with his pants on the ground and I start my hillbilly impersonation: "Why you look like a big ole hog bowey!".. His little legs start kicking and I hear him say "why you son of a bi****!". Yikes! I run from the restroom and quickly take a seat in the gate area...Ned Beatty storms out of the restroom and up to the podium accusing one of the gate agents of something..I also hear him say "who just came out of that restroom!?"..I was far away but I heard him yell something about "I'm an actor and a dam good one..blah..blah..blah!" He went berserk!

I was laughing so hard tears were comin out my eyes

I'm just glad to hear that men don't "socialize" in the restrooms there. When I go into a public restroom here I practically run in there holding my breath, do my business (I only urinate in public restrooms) and get out as fast as I can. Yesterday at Fossil Trace I go into the restroom and it stunk, I mean it stunk bad. Some guy is camped out in a stall reading something because I heard papers shuffling. He was perfectly happy in there. I don't get it

This IS the Gulf. When I was in Muscat I drove myself crazy looking for a set of flatware (cutlery) that matched. Or a set of 8 glasses that matched. You can't always get what you want here! (Sorry, Madam, finished!) That's why people hoard the strangest things! One day it's available, the next it's not. Thank God Lulu and Carrefour finally reached Oman. But even Lulu and Carrefour in Doha are not reliable. (Remember no chicken? The veg department being closed for how many months?) And don't get me started on bed sheets. No such thing as a standard size. Or the time seven out of my eight bathrooms had a plumbing problem and the guys sent to fix it had never seen a flush toilet before. Or when my ac spit ice cubes at me. Or when it takes 4 days to get an oil change from the car dealer here. Or when Land Rover road service took 2 hours to find me on Al Sadd street (I gave them the crossroad name.) Or when one of my light bulbs would just explode and shower glass all over the floor. Or the bidet would go kaBLAM and rain water all over. And we haven't even started on the driving ...

Well Bull, having lived in this region for quite a while I can definitely vouch for serviced suites over stand alone villas. Not only would you get everything you want and need in the suites (the facilities at the W being some of the best in Doha) but you don't have to take care, or find anyone, to take care of anything. Unlike if you were in your own villa.

Finding decent maintenance people here is like finding a needle in a haystack.

My in-laws used to live in a beautiful villa, with a gorgeous pool and BB-Q area, unfortunately they were never able to find anyone to take good care of the pool so they ended up having to do it all themselves (not a small task when it's 110 degrees + and you've got to garden).

As a bachelor I'm sure the last thing you want to do is spend your days maintaining your yard, pool, etc.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Four Seasons apartments as well. The Four Seasons facilities are AMAZING!

3 Story, 5 bedroom + 1 maids room, fully furnished, high fenced, wide garden and with swimming pool.

The owners like to barbeque and host parties so they allotted a bbque area...let's see:

Stand alone 3-4 bedroom home --- check

Hot tub --- A jacuzzi in the master's bedroom

Pool with grilling /party area -- YES

Near Beach/Marina -- just across the West bay Lagoon

Near Clubs -- you could drive to Ritz & Grand Hyatt

Near major highway -- the road is a major road

Native village --- NOPE

Large garage w/workshop -- garage could fit 3 vehicles so you could convert it

One large room with high ceilings --- ground floor has high ceilings but no chandeliers...contemporary styled

Large Yard -- check

Privacy fence -- check

Home gym/sauna --- you could convert one of the rooms

Pizza oven --- just an oven/ can be upgraded

We went there with a client for viewing this afternoon and it was awesome...

PROBLEM IS...your allowance is not enough...SORRY :)

I'd say a stand-alone villa in West Bay Lagoon or on the Pearl. They are large, over 3000 sq ft, and better built than many villas in Doha. There are amenities nearby. Our neighbors in West Bay Lagoon were mostly Qatari, with a few others being Czech, German and Chinese. We had a pool and a large garden and were on the water. Our Qatari next-door neighbor had peacocks. Oh, and by the way, the last time I helped an American woman negotiate 25% more salary she took me to dinner at Thai Snack when she came to Doha. :)

Blonde dyed trailer trash.

__________________________________________________

Ok friends..A little background on the Bull... I'm not trailer trash...My grandfather owned the town of Greenville Florida- He owned the entire town, the mill where everyone worked, the general store, the hardware store, The barber shop, the hair salon, the gas station...Everything. He lost it all when my father was a boy. He lost it gambling, drinkin and skirt chasing..He lost it all and ran off with a woman. When my father was 17 he hitch hiked to FSU university, got a job at the gas station in Tallahassee and worked his way through school. He joined the Air Force and become a decorated officer flying f-86D's in Korea, and F-105's in Viet Nam, when we weren't officially in Viet Nam..he shot down many communist aircraft and killed a lot of people on the ground. While training at Perrin Air Force Base he met my mother, a Texas nurse with a 167 IQ. She didn't want to have anything to do with him, but he persisted and finally won her over. After 2 wars and 16 years into his service he got out with the help of a senator and took a job with a major airline- He eventually retired as a 777 captain. I grew up in Chicago in a nice home, but since he started the career so late we were never rich when I was a kid, in fact he was a DC-8 engineer for years and also worked part time at a hardware store for awhile to supplement the family income. I didn't grow up wealthy but he did show us the world..

I'm not white trash, never have been, never will be.

Bull, am looking forward to a house warming party in your new abode!

You'll have to let my husband shoot a few hoops with you though

____________________________________________________

It'll be fun Nomercie, you have to watch though. I have to tell you that I never let anybody win. Correction: I never let any man or boy win. Even when my kids were 3 I played to win, and I'd win like 85-0. I can't count the number of times my boys have left the court crying while growing up. Eventually one kid started beating me last year, but he's 6-5 and plays everyday. I'm undefeated against the rest of the family. I played a neighborhood kid (22 years old) a few weeks ago and beat him 21-20 on a last second 3 pointer and he just walked away cursing..I heard him say "F-ing cheater!" under his breath..I just laughed and said "hey- nobody beats the bull kid.."

If you wanna make someone better at sports? You humiliate them on the field. All my kids dominated in sports at school..Not only were they the best at school, it wasn't even debatable- Everyone knew it- When one of my kids played football the entire crowd would chant his name and after the game parents would line up to shake his hand. They'd say stuff like "it was an honor to watch you play" lol..He'd just mumble something back..I'd always say "can you be a little nicer son"? and he'd just say, "they bother me"..

And yes- I have a half court in my house- We play while watching basketball and the Denver Nuggets play the Lakers tonight, so...I'm eating a light breakfest this morning. Grapefruit and 100% Kona coffee, hand imported from Hawaii

Well lets look at his requirements:

Stand alone 3-4 bedroom home - Can find those anywhere.

Hot tub/Pool with grilling /party area - Possible, you'll just need to look around a bit. I know some lovely ones on Salwa Road, but not sure if there are any available.

Near Beach/Marina - West Bay is the only spot really.

Near Clubs - Unless you live in one of the hotels, you're always going to be about 20 minutes from a club.

Near major highway - The whole country can be crossed in 2 hours, so you're always near a "major highway"

Native village - no such thing

Large garage w/workshop - You could possibly turn an outdoor maids room or majilis into one, but you won't find a place with one already done.

One large room with high ceilings - it's called a living room or indoor majilis. Given their penchant for gawdy chandeliers here, it shouldn't be a problem.

Large Yard - you can get decent size but not large by North American standards.

Privacy fence - every stand alone house will have these.

Home gym/sauna - you'll have to install one yourself.

Pizza oven - install yourself.

Actually, check the W apartments down in West Bay. They're furnished, stylish and you'll be living above some of the most happening bars in Doha.

I highly recommend waiting till you get to Doha before looking for a place. Not only will you be able to negotiate better but you'll get a better sense of where things like the Night Clubs, etc are located.

I always found that the best places weren't advertised and you had to go out and look for them. Call a few for rent numbers. etc.

Atleast people who are sympathetic or are responding with great care and concern on this or like threads from the OP in the last few days would not frown on anyone else who comes asking questions related to their move however repetitive or idiotic they may sound or about their personal life including the failed love stories. But going by the track record of some I guess they would as usual still be doing otherwise, shamelessly.

Honestly, I havent seen QL hitting such low for sometime now.

You aren't going to get a villa in a Qatari neighborhood for 20,000/month. That's way low for anything but a 2 bedroom apartment at the Pearl. 3,000 sq foot we're talking 30,000/month and up. Our assistant professors are living in nice 2 bedroom high rise apartments for about 20,000. What they call stand-alone villas (not condos in a compound) can easily run 40,000 and above. Honey, you been low-balled!

Great news for everyone. I got them up to 33,261 riyals +utilities, and I figure I could comfortably kick in another 30,000 from my pocket bringing my total housing budget up to almost 50,000 riyals. Here are my requirements

Stand alone 3-4 bedroom home

Hot tub/Pool with grilling /party area

Near Beach/Marina

Near Clubs

Near major highway

Native village

Large garage w/workshop

One large room with high ceilings

Large Yard

Privacy fence

Home gym/sauna

Pizza oven

Always

My best friends wife left him a few weeks ago and he blamed me- He said "and your s*** didn't help matters either"...Still trying to figure out what that meant. I always used to tell him to take better care of his wife right in front of her..I was just kidding? Never mind the fact that he was an angry drunk 5 nites a week, that had nothing to do with her leaving- It was me!

I travel a lot Nomercie, and we never go on tour buses, organized tours, cruise ships, or anything like that. We always either rent a car or use the local transportation systems. We immerse ourselves in the local cultures, we never insulate ourselves from it. When we go to Mexico, South America, or the South Pacific island we break bread with the natives, not other well healed travelers at the hotel..Thats what I'm all about and I don't care how dirty or dangerious it is
