iPhone question

I purchased an old iPhone from a friend in the U.S. I was told that the phone was unlocked. I've been opening it to mess around with it and clear out her old info, but only today did I get around to changing the SIM card from the AT&T SIM (from the U.S.) to the Qtel SIM (from my current mobile).

As soon as I did this it went into "emergency call only mode" - nothing else showed up except something referring to iTunes. I returned the original SIM to the iPhone and it worked just fine (but I cannot call, of course, since it has the U.S. SIM).

I am brand new to the iPhone thing and don't know where to start. Do I need to do something to get it to work with my Qtel SIM? Is it "bricking" when I insert the original SIM card? Any ideas?

Thanks,

You need to get it unlocked, or do it yourself.
