guys, if you bought an iPhone 4 outside Qatar, FaceTime will surely work, the only problem is, if you bought your unit which is not a factory unlock, then you might have a problem unlocking the phone especially Modem Firmware 2.10 and 3.10, as of this moment, there is no unlock yet for such firmware and might wait for a couple of months before the unlock will be release, based on the thread, this people will not release the unlock not until Apple will release the final version of iOS 4.3 which currently in beta, but we are confident that the unlock will be out soon. So lets see and wait.

There are couple of easy fixes to get Facetime working.

1) Remove Qtel or Vodafone Sim card from the phone and put an international sim card ex. vodafone europe or Orange or whatever

Download latest ios 4.2.1 for your phone and restore using iTunes. When the phone starts, it will find the international Sim card and will keep Facetime

2) jailbreak your phone and go to iphoneislam repository on Cydia and install their facetime hack to activate and show it.

Enjoy

your right, Skype is a better alternative for FaceTime, though I heard that FaceTime quality is way better than Skype but haven't tried yet.

you can use now skype instead..it will work like facetime with a bit of twist because you can call any device with skype account like pc, laptop weather its windows or mac, unlike facetime its eclusive only for apple products.just download the latest version of skype in your iphone 4 or ipod touch 4.

Yeah your right, iPhone is a little bit expensive, and yes FaceTime would be useful if you have this iPhone 4 coz FaceTime will run on Wi-Fi, but here in Qatar, FaceTime is deactivated and we don't even know the reason why, some countries as well doesn't have FaceTime installed, check here for those countries http://www.macshared.com/?page_id=28.
