Certainly not in the 3 years we have been here and from what we hear, it hasn't previously.

It's certainly cold enough but there are no clouds.

Worldcue® Alert

Severity: Warning Alert

Communications/Technology: UPDATE 1: Cable cut causes Internet outages and slowdowns in India and the Middle East Jan. 30; businesses affected. Disruptions could last through Feb. 13.

The locations affected by this alert are:

* India

* Bahrain

* Egypt

* Kuwait

* Qatar

* United Arab Emirates

* Saudi Arabia

This alert began 30 Jan 2008 18:01 GMT and is scheduled to expire 14 Feb 2008 23:59 GMT.

* Incident: Internet disruptions

* Time Frame: Possibly through Feb. 13

* Location: India, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE

* Impact: Internet and Internet-based services slowed or unavailable. International telephone service disruptions.

Summary

Damage to two underwater fiber-optic cables between Alexandria, Egypt, and Palermo, Italy, is causing widespread Internet service disruptions. The Internet Service Providers' Association of India (ISPAI) reports that outages are affecting 60-65 percent of Internet services in that country. One of the UAE's two main ISPs is completely down.

The disruptions are affecting business operations, including those of outsourcing firms in India. Authorities are moving to reroute Internet links, but cable repairs may take as long as two weeks.

Advice

Individual ISPs may have effective redundancy plans in place, but service may be slower than normal. Consider using traditional means to conduct essential business rather than rely on Internet-based functions such as email. Internet and international phone services may improve during off-peak hours. Contact airlines directly to make flight reservations and confirm bookings.
