International School in Doha?

By victoriabyberg

We are considering moving to Doha in August/September, and will come fore a visit in about a week.

One of our main goals with our visit is to get an opinion about the schoolsituation. We are from Sweden and have 3 children at the age of 3, 7 and 9, our children are not englishspeeking. Does anybody out there have any information about the American, the Bittish or the Canadian school in Doha.

Thanks in advance

The Norwegian Club of....(country ) is what it´s mostly called. I have not found out yet whether there is one in Qatar but I will contact my friends and find out for you. Good luck if you move. We have not decided yet but probably have to soon.

I have moved with my kids from Stavanger-Scotland-Sweden. If you want to you can send me a PM if you are wondering about anything in particular.

We are probably on the way to Doha. Wondering about the same issue around schools and languages. Our children are 11 and 12. They know some english and we will try get some training before arrival. Have heard that they need up to one year to adapt. The first two months all they want to do is to go home.

Maria: what is Norskklubben??

The children mentioned above are quite young, any experience with older children like mine?

Would be nice to get in contact when and if we are coming.

Hej

Bor i Varberg

Hej

Thanks for the advise, it seems that we have a major problem here. I have found a contact in Doha that will help us so that we can get in contact with the prefered schools.

We will after finding out that this really can be a problem contact our employer about this issue.

Hej Therese,

I doubt you'll even get onto the waiting lists of the schools you mention. Generally, entry requirements for primary schools are good english and being toilet trained. However, there's such a shortage of spaces that you're very unlikely to get into the British schools without a UK passport.

I know the British schools have a February cutoff for applications for August entry. I believe the American school decides even earlier.

Some companies have deals with schools where the school must accept a certain number of employees' kids. Check with your employer about this - it might help you get a school place.

Sorry I can't be more positive.

Hej Victoria,

If we are moving my children will be educated for about 4 months before our departure by a personal teacher, I really hope thar they will cope with the most easy converation at the arrival.

But I still don´t know of course how quick they can learn the english language. Do you have an idee.

my advice is to start teaching your kids English as soon as possible, as it is very difficult to adapt when you don't understand the language.

Mind you, I was 9 when my parents emigrated to a new country, ...and I coped.

If they speak French, maybe you should try the French school.

Good luck...
