Interesting facts

I had this forwarded to me by a friend. I thought it was interesting and thought I'd share it for the context it offers. These are easily verifiable facts. They are not intended to disparage any company or country.

Qatar’s economy in context:

The GDP of Qatar in 2011 was $173 billion

Exxon Mobile’s revenue for the same year was $486 billion.

Wal-Mart’s earnings $446 billion. Wal-Mart has 2 million in employees, and if revenues were shared equally, it's employees would have a per capita income roughly twice that of Qatar's and the highest in the world.

Apple posted earnings in excess of $200 billion.

Qatar’s per capita income in comparison to the U.S. was higher is 1980 (2.7 times the per capita income in the U.S.) than it is today (about 1.9 times the income in the U.S.)

Qatar is the world’s 51st largest economy, ranking just after Romania, Kazakhastan, and Peru.

Yeah very interesting Qatar has a fanatastic per capita income. Is the count of the guys at the Industrial area included in the capita income.. If yes those guys over there are getting such ridiculously low salaries. Could somebody please do something about that for a start

Absolutely. The hypocrisy of those leaders was something else. My point was to provide examples of people who criticized wealthy, as apparently he had never heard of any.

Anyway that was his attempt to hijack another thread. The purpose is of the OP is to contextualize Qatar's wealth relative to corporations and other countries. It's really just food for thought.

No one is criticizing wealth on this thread.

As for "Never seen anyone get criticized for being rich" . . . what can I say besides: Maoists, Bolsheviks, French revolutionaries, communists, socialists, etc. etc. My understanding is that such groups were highly critical of wealth. The lack of your knowledge (and willingness to display it) never ceases to amaze.

IMHO Qatar is trying to be too many things. As it builds these monoliths for a small population,it must realise that they have to be maintained.

It's a good point Brit. Current government projection for growth in population alone is to double by 2030--almost entirely by virtue of imported male construction labor. Personally, I don't understand it. I guess short people wish they were taller and small countries wish they were bigger--and both are blind to the advantages of being short and small.

Regardless, it's an interesting point for discussion: what are the advantages of continued rapid growth?

With all the wealth at its disposal, does a tiny country like Qatar need to build up its economy ?

India is a wealthy country as a whole. It's just that it has so many people to share it.
