Interesting comment from the QTA chairman
"We don't want people to come for a $50 room to lie on the beach all day and walk around with a backpack and shorts. These are not the type of people we're targeting." - Ahmed Abdullah Al-Nuaimi

What exactly does Qatar offer to the $200+ hotel tenant or the $50 budget traveller? Beats me!
People don't travel around to new destinations to stay in a hotel room. They go to places for - sights, nature, nightlife, events, sport recreation etc...
These are my 2 dirhams, and I'm a frequent leisure traveller. I wouldn't come to Qatar on a holiday especially when neighbouring gulf countries offer everything Qatar offers and much much more. Would you?
I wouldn't spend it here
They should also invest in world class urban designers. I doubt if they have zoning regulations here. Urban designers can provide better interrelationship between buildings especially that they're planing to construct more facilities for the world cup, it's like big architecture. If they already have well no comment...
/: seriously now! who in this /her right mind would squander their annual savings to come to Qatar?
NOT ME.!
The Importance Of Well-fitting Shoes In Childhood Black Ugg 5469 Adirondack Boots
Running is a very popular sport. It is a great way to get in shape. Runners can make it a solo sport or get together with a group and talk why they head on down the road as a group. There are those who are competitive and those who just want the feeling of moving. For all of these people it is imperative to find the best fit of running shoes. A shoe is not the only item of apparel that must fit well for someone who runs. It is the most important item to have fit well. The ramifications of a poorly fitting shoe can be long term. Injuries from an ill fitting shoe can stop training in its tracks. The most severe injuries can have long term effects. There are many types of sports footwear offered in the marketplace today. This is a change from past decades when there were few choices. Discount UGG Bailey Button Short Boots 1872 Berry Wine There were really only a few models of tennis shoes or sneakers. They were not specialized for particular runners. There has been a great increase in the number of shoes offered but that this still means the consumer needs to be extra careful and not just pick any shoe. The level of footwear ranges greatly. There are differences in quality of construction and design. This does not mean a runner has to buy the most costly one. What it does mean is Uggs Outlet that a runner should invest what they can into a quality shoe. The feet take a beating with every stride. Part of what has fueled new design is an increased understanding on how athletics effect the body. Science has also helped develop new materials that can be used in footwear. This has allowed improvements in options for all level of runners. These advances allow better choices for runners to get a proper fitting footwear that prevents injury. Feet differ between people. These variances include the height of the foot arch. There are people with extremely high arches and those with almost none at all. These arches effect what kind of shoe a runner needs to choose. Different shoes are designed to provide a range of support. The fitting of a shoe must also factor in how a person places their foot on the ground with each stride. There is a tremendous impact on the body with each step. UGG Classic Tall Boots 5815 Mettlic Pewter There are runners who strike with the heel first and others who run differently. Athletes also land more on one side of the foot than the other. These differences must be taken into account when fitting is done. There are many products made by well known manufacturers. Many of them offer charts that narrow down their shoes for different people. This information can usually found online. This can be helpful for a runner to choose a shoe. One of the best ways to figure out what the best shoe is for each person is to consult with the experts at a running store. The associates there can take the time to observe the person and make recommendations. Several styles can then be tried on and the best fit for running shoes can be found. Discount UGG Gloves Sienna

what a statement to boost toursim in here!!shaking head....
Most governments and bureaucrats in pretty much any country have the potential to make daft decisions and waste money. It’s just that some countries have the ability to waste a lot more money. Witness the financial crises in most developed countries. It annoys me to see Qatar so serious about spending money on things like fancy hotels, when the Hamad Medical City, built in 2006, is still sitting empty 5 years later. I just can’t understand why it is more important to someone in the government to build hotels whether or not people stay in them, but there is no motivation to fit out a hospital to ease the overcrowding at the other Hamad hospitals.
you know whats the funny thing...is that "us" fail to understand that "they" ...although most of them "heads" are educated from western universities.....do not seem to be break a sweat with where they are heading with all of this...... helloooo wake up everyone......something has to give..... !!! And trust me when it comes to clueless-ness its epidemic across most beuraucratic systems.....(im choosing my words carefully here!)... so this is another of those....... "huh?! I said what? naaah i didnt say that...what i meant was..."
u cant be conservative and at the same time go about claiming tht ur tourist friendly....... unless there are hordes and hordes of conservative families that are lining to get in...(tht i havent heard of!)........ somethings gotta give......and jus like what fubar said....... they aint got no clue which side to be on........
pfffffff!!!!!
That would seem to contradict somewhat his earlier statement that oversupply is a big concern. I just don't understand why you would be spending so much money on ports and an airport and luring all the big names in hotel brands to Qatar, only to turn around and say that you don't really care if the tourism market suceeds or fails. That would send a rather worrying message to investors that the government isn't really committed to trying to attract and retain tourists.
"We are different from the neighbouring countries. They focus on tourism as a source of income. If (the tourism market) crashes, it makes no difference for us."
So , they are focusing on a niche market, more for PR purposes than revenue generation.
I loved his comment about everything being left to the last minute for the 2006 Asian Games : "Some of them finished after the Asian Games." Many of the hotels are STILL not finished, such as the City Center hotels. These were projects that were needed for 2006 and here we are, 5 years later, only coming close to completing them. And what is the deal with the Aspire Tower hotel? It's kind of embarrassing to think how much money was poured into building the tower, and it's still sitting there, empty, and doing nothing other than attracting moths to the bright lights. Perhaps there are some exciting tourism related projects in the pipeline, like a world class water park, or amusement park, but in my opinion, countries either have tourist industries based on history, or leisure. Either you have a city full of beautiful old buildings, like the Taj Mahal or religious temples, castles and historic precincts, or you have exciting amusements and decent nightlife. I'm not sure what Qatar plans to use to lure tourists here. The QTA remarks seem to assume that people will be flying through the airport and will just decide to stay in Qatar, by accident, without any reason. I'm not sure what the QTA actually thinks people would want to come to Qatar to do. And I wonder if they have ever taken the time to study their market and ask tourists why they would want to come here. Spending all this money on what will probably be an amazing airport, only to tell the bulk of travellers (the budget conscious) that they aren't welcome in Qatar seems foolish to me.
well said thexonic
Insomninone of that is going to happen trust me. The 2022 games are just for business not for pleasure. There might be a few malls here and there but that's about it.
Qatar was never a tourist location, it has nothing to offer in tourism. The heat is unbareable, there are no attractions here, not much to do for fun either. It's too restricted and limited. The only reason why 1 should come here is to live with their families and save up. For the rest, there's alot of places for people to visit. Dubai has a million and one tourist attractions and alot of things to do for everyone and for people of all class. The places that already exist in Qatar are malls which are packed most of the time and impossible to find parking at. After city center and souq waqif putting unnecessary parking tickets and landmark having a parking space for 50 to 100 cars, mall has nothing to offer... everyone ends up at villagio. If you think about going to katara or pearl, its made for luxury and not entertainment to be honest. Over priced for no reason. It's an over priced ripoff to come here for tourism.
I agree with LP.. And all what you mention will be available before 2022. Its among the many clauses that needs to be followed when hosting the "big game"
Now if they are targeting those who spend 500 or 5000 Riyals for a 5-star service, then, of course, they have to have alcohol and prostitutes, gambling and topless beaches. Or?
Well said Azamat....Qatar offers NOTHING for the leisure traveller that other GCC countries don't do far better....
