In India's villages: No toilet, no bride

Darly
By Darly

Strange what brides as for :)

From CNN:

New Delhi, India (CNN) -- Most Indian mothers want their daughters to marry decent men who make a good living. Now, in parts of rural India, women have a new -- and rather unusual -- demand for matrimony: a toilet.

"No toilet, no bride," has become a rallying cry for women raising a stink about the lack of a basic amenity.

They see it as a human rights issue, especially in villages where plumbing can be nonexistent.

It was that way in Sunariyan Kalan in the northern state of Haryana. Sumitra Rathi said village women had no choice but to relieve themselves without privacy.

They would go before sunrise or hold it in until darkness fell once again to avoid being seen. Or they would walk out to the fields and endure embarrassment. They don't want their daughters to face the same indignity.

"Many of them do make serious inquiries from the families of grooms about latrines," she said.

As a member of the local council, Rathi has helped build toilets in 250 houses in Sunariyan Kalan since 1996.

Still, about five dozen homes lack covered bathrooms.

The problem is so big in India that the country would need to construct 112,000 toilets every day if it wants to meet its sanitation goal by 2012, according to the Ministry of Rural Development.

Even as India emerges as a global economic power, millions of its citizens still live in poverty. The government estimates that less than 30 percent of villagers have access to latrines, which poses serious health risks and increases the threat of deadly diseases like typhoid and malaria.

To help overcome the enormity of the sanitation challenge, the government is offering incentives to encourage villagers to build bathrooms. The poorest

of the poor in Haryana stands to receive Rs. 2,200 ($48) for each toilet they install, said P.S. Yadav, a state coordinator for the sanitation campaign.

The incentives are especially attractive to women, for whom the problem transcends health issues.

Local women, often illiterate, have taken a keen interest in bathroom construction, said Roshni Devi, the council chief in Haryana's Kothal Khurd village.

And through it, they have gained a sense of self, making the lowly toilet seat feel more like a lofty throne.

Thanks. Its refreshing to have a realistic view. Rather than facing the truth, lots of people take it as an insult to their nation and bury their heads in the sand.

this is no exaggeration at all.many men in rural india have little or no concern about such basic amenities that their women might need.they are just taken for granted and the poor women-folk have remained oppressed for ages.i am proud of my country-women for raising their voice at least now.better late than never.they will start with small issues like this and will move on to serious concerns gradually.

all hope is not lost.amen!:-)

Why do people get irritated?

This is reality in a vast country with poverty. These women should be applauded for doing something where their government can't.

By navdak• 2 Nov 2009 18:35

Actually they always had Bathroom there so taking a bath was never a problem. They didn't have toilets there as it was thought that relieving yourself within the boundaries of your home will bring bad smell in your home. That was the issue in several villages in north where there are lots of rich farmers. It's not all about poverty. There were some people ofcourse who couldn't afford to have toilets in their home due to poverty and space constraints. When you have a population of 1.2 Billion, not everyone gets all the basic amenities, that's just one of the several sad facts of life..

Ashwini said India is top one in world ...

If the peoples will says bad things about india but then also INDIA is Top One in everything compare to other countrys.

-

that's right Ashwini, top in poverty rate/aids/rape victims. Progressing good lol

Anyway, I hope those women in the villages get what they demand. I would really say, government should look after these basic issues and ground realities. Technology advancement is undoubtedly plays a keyrole in economic development, but there're other more serious concerning issues.

I heard in the newspapers, now india is blaming pak for fake notes, what crap? :-s And you people rather searching for the truth, would follow what is said to you. That's where we lack. Anyway, your country, your issues, your decisions. I hardly care.

I was once traveling from Kolkata to Chennai by Train. Its approximately 30 hours journey. Early that morning, as we were crossing Andra Pradesh (south Indian) I was surprised to see a group of women (12-15 women) siting in a circle chatting and relief themselves.

I found that so funny....and inorder to mess around, I took my Shoes of my feet and held them in my hands showing them, as if to say....U filthy animals. BUt it seems they were well prepared...I saw 2 of them grab a stick laying next to them and show it to me...hahhahahhah

More than 1 Billion population..Who can manage this much of people by giving them all basic needs. I believe the government is trying to do so, but the invasion by UK was lead them not to build a good social foundation..It may take time to reach all people..

Bee Never mind the offensive posts coming from our neighbouring countries. They are upset that their country is on the verge of being extinct and ours is doing much better and they can't do a thing about it. So their frustrations pour out in the virtual world.

Most of the offensive posts anyway come from people who make a new id to just post that poison here, you should pity them for living such a sad life, don't hate them..
