Indian maid dies at airport

Dubai: An Indian housemaid, who was stranded in a transit lounge of Muscat airport for five days after losing her passport at the Doha airport, died on her way to the hospital.

Beebi Lumada, 40, was travelling from Muscat to Chennai via Doha by Qatar Airways last week but lost her passport while in transit at the Doha airport, the Gulf News said in a report yesterday.

When her passport was not found, she was sent back to Muscat, the port of origin.

The housemaid had cancelled her Oman residence visa and since she did not carry her passport she was not allowed to re-enter Muscat
Muscat Airport does not have a hotel in the transit area, Qatar Airways provided food, drinks, a blanket and all the necessary help to make Beebi comfortable.

According to the report, the stranded passenger allegedly began to get delusional

A senior doctor with the government hospital said that it is possible that the severe mental trauma caused a cardiac arrest.

It was the immigration authorities and airport personnel which would have been involved. It's a tragic case that seems to have happened because of a passport problem and the poor woman being unable to communicate effectively or advocate for herself. I don't blame the airline for that.

.. and now wonder what the airline concerend will have to say about treating a passenger in this manner or does it only happen to travellers who put up with all this shabby and inhuman treatment. The same may happen to someone else again in the future unless corrective measures are taken and airline staff properly educated and informed about such issues that may arise from time to time

New development in the story: Contrary to what was reported earlier about the maid being the patient of seizures and hysteria, her sponsor had denied that she has any illness.

The stranded housemaid who died at the Muscat International Airport, had no sickness before she left, according to her sponsor Khalid Hamad Al Ghailani.

Talking to Gulf News from his home in eastern port town of Sur, Al Ghailani said that he had got her examined at the government hospital in Sur before sending her home for good.

"She had no health issues," he said.

Its more like when this maids are no longer needed or required or a new one is on order then this stories like the maid is sick, not hardworkding, stealing and so on crop up. Did it take her sponsor all this time to realize that she was not okay. Stories in the gulf papers make for very grim reading about this much abused and helpless workers

This talks about award winning and five star airline sounds like crap along with this unconcerned and sleepy Indian embassy and its personnel. Could all this so called educated people not have been more caring and given this helpless human being the assistance she needed and deserved. Its true she lost her passport but with some help the airline and the embassy could have helped her. Now that she is dead and still does not have her passport what are they going to do with her.

true and fair journalism is essential in the democratic setup but even there many times they pander to sensationalism leaving the truth in the mud...apply a pinch of salt to what you read...in financial markets there is the same problem of which analyst to believe? They are 100% sure of their research/methodology and predictions and the time usually proves half of them wrong. So, the markets operate on the concensus opinion of all the analysts put together. May not give the stellar returns but wont leave u much worse off either.

Who knows what was the main cause of death. Was she medically fit as per records? Was proper attention given to her at the right place when they noticed initial symptoms? There could be some previous history of illness.

By nomerci• 10 Oct 2010 21:34

Well, that's what happens in countries that are not democratic and have no free speech,,,,the "journalism" is somewhat ...hmm, one- sided.

We all know where we are, and we know what we can and should not do. As simple as that.

By Xena• 10 Oct 2010 21:30

we don't know both sides... we only know what is being told to the newspaper, by whoever spoke from the airport and the embassy, who are both probably trying to cover their tracks....

We cannot ask the lady, since she is dead.

By nomerci• 10 Oct 2010 21:26

Xena, maybe. BUT, we do not know the full story. There are always 2 sides to the coin.

She was being transferred to a pshycriatric unit and suffered a heartattack?

Hmmmm... one wonders if they didn't overdose her on something they gave her to calm down and her body reacted to that....

I don't buy the Cardiac arrest story.... there was no history of heart disease... they spoke about her being dillusional, but nothing about heart disease...

If stress from being standed at an airport caused a heartattack, I recon there'd be many more stories like this circulating...

It is standard practice. If a passport is said to be lodt/stolen/misplaced, then the embassy is informed and asked to take appropriate action.

have informed the concerned embassy about the lady. It seems there were a lot of lapses in this story and many things to be reviewed (procedural) so as to prevent the recurrence of such unwanted incident. Five days is too long for her to be at the airport. At the very least, she should be reprimanded at the airport jail and taken cared by the airport authorities rather than roaming around the airport premises!

the embassy is responsible for her death.wat ws the embassy doing? dammmm............how many housemaids r dying each day,i feel so sorry for these ppl .if it was a person who is weloff, the airport or the embassy wouldn't hav bothers whether they had the passport with them or not.maids r treated very badly where ever they go.its not only in the airport, even at the hospitals they r treated the same.r educated fools take the advantage out of the uneducated maids.feel sad to hear these kind of stories.

It is so sad and I am praying for her.. But lets look at the other side of the window, If anybody lost their essential travel document in the airport, the authorities there has no other option but to follow the rule which is to hold her until the matter is resolved or transfer her to the point of origin. I dont know if there are other things they could have done... She dies, maybe it is the will of god. I dont know, but things happens for a reason....

Ana, this is not how I understood the story.

I read that she had seizures and was suffering from hysteria, those were stated as the reasons her sponsor sent her home. And from what I know, these things do not appear over night, she must have been suffering from those conditions for a while.

Ant,

Indian ambassador Anil Wadhwa told Gulf News that it was sad that Lumada lost her life before an exit pass could be issued for her departure. "It is sad that procedural delay delayed help for the stranded passenger," he said.

He added that the mission had asked immigration authorities to send a lost passport report as there was no access for embassy staff to the stranded passenger at the airport.

Why was she sent to work abroad not being healthy?

Do they not check those things in those agencies in India?

And, what about her family? They surely knew she was unstable? How could they let her go in the first place?

what a tragedy! What pain and fear she must have felt.. its obvious the poor lady was not of stable health to begin with hence should never have been left to face such a traumatic situation. I don't understand how anyone could have thought her fit enough to fly home alone! Traveling by air can be trialling for a perfectly healthy person let alone a person like Beebi..Raheemullah =(

These cases are normal, like holding the passengers at the airport. I have experienced it in Dubai Airport myself for two days waiting for a small error to be rectified. I have also seen hundreds of passengers waiting for their documents, visas and other requirements for weeks without food and accommodation. They have to sleep on the floor in such a cold AC, as nobody brings warm clothes with them. They dont have money to eat, as the food inside the airport is so expensive.
