Was wondering if someone can give me any pointers for job hunt in Qatar. Born and raised in United States Of America. I have about 4 years of IT QA experience.
Thanks for such a quick Response Samia_Sheikh . My Specialty is Quality assurance . I also have one N a half year of C-sharp programming experience. I’ll try MaNai next sunday.
Once again I really appreciate your quick and generous response. Thanks Folks
Dunno-Rajesh, Richard, Tom, whatever their names are?
Certainly not Asian though, to my mind the features of most sub-continetals are much more caucasian than Asian.
I've comprimised and started using the term "South-Asian" when there is chance of confusion with East Asian, much like using First Nations to avoid confusion with with Indians.
According to our friend Wikipedia I'm not alone in my thinking:
In the United States, Canada, and Australia, the term refers most commonly to people of predominantly East Asian or Southeast Asian ancestry; however in the United Kingdom and Anglophone Africa, the term refers most commonly to South Asians.[7][8] In other countries, the term is applied to all people from Asia in general. In the US, however, Middle Eastern and Central Asian people are usually not considered Asian peoples.[9]
Guess I'll stick with South Asian, then there'll be no confusion with those Brits or Anglophone Africans.
How about indigenous, where's that fall in the ranking system? I got told off once a long time ago in Canada for using that term, which seemed to me to be pretty safe and neutral. I didn't like the term "Native" Canadian as to my mind anyone born in the country was a native Canadian. First Nations seemed to come into vogue about the same time, constitution re-writing/Meach Lake kind time.
I've always been confused by "Asian", particularly the British usage of it. To me, Asian has always meant East Asian-Chinese, Japanese, etc. I was extremely confused to hear those from the sub-continent referred to as Asian. What I considered to be Asian were being referred to by the Brits as 'oriental", which surprised me as it is a term that is considered out of vogue and mildly racist in Canada now.
I'm no expert, but I think that's only in reference to the tribes inthe USA....for instance I noticed tribes from further north are not mentioned (like the Manitoo, etc...).
From what little my friends taught me, they have a fascinating history and culture....I sincerely hope it never fades away like it has been until it disappears
Stay safe.
Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?
Ya, I grew up with a lot of natives and they always preferred to be called Native Canadian or First Nations or by tribe name I.e. It was Migmah were I lived.
The really didn't like Canadian Indians either LOL
On another note... we also do the ethnic identification differently too....for instance we do not say Irish Canadian or Italian Canadian....We say Canadian of Irish or Italian or whatever decent.
Stay safe.

How Chris's crap navigational skills got a whole nation incorrectly named. Maybe your friends in Uni hated being called American Indians on acount of the "American' part rather than the 'Indian " part.

My friends in Uni used to HATE being called American Indians because (as they rightly pointed out) they were neither American nor had anything to do with India and only got the name when Chris was trying to cover up his stupidity for taking a wrong turn in front of his crew LOL.....seriously, it was they who told me that the correct term was 1st nation (at least in Canada).
Stay safe.

In the States they used to be referred to as Native Americans because that was deemed to be politically correct. Nowadays, most of the tribes either on the reservations and elsewhere prefer to be called American Indians.

We don't refer to them as Indians...either Natives...or the more correct term is 1st nation....and I have some Iroquoi Friends who went to University with me....and one of my wife's best friends has an Algonquin sister (adopted).
Btw, I like the new avatar Gypsy...but you need something that will highlight your peak physical condition more
Stay safe all.

Yeah, well he might be an Apache warrior for all you know. Alright Native Canadian if you like. The indians could care less about the border between the US and Canada. It all used to be theirs anyway.

So what would you refer to those from the sub-continent as?

It backs up what I said. They call themselves American Indians except in strictly scientific writing.
