Importing electricals

Tendai
By Tendai

Hey folks!

As some of you may know, my wife and I headed out there fairly soon and we're now approaching that 'butterflies in the belly' stage of plan execution. Its getting close!

This questions for the Brit fellas who've gone through what I'm about to. No offence ladies, but I think I'll defer to male opinion on this one! :-)

I've got a 10 month old 42" plasma screen,  and home theatre and gaming system which I love and am loathe to leaving behind. Question: is it worth carting across? Before I knew that all UK electricals are Qatar compatible, I thought I'd have to sell this stuff and attempt to buy new. Now I'm better educated, I know which option I prefer.. but I'm practical.. and also I have this nightmare of receiving my consignment in more pieces than I bought it in. To import existing eqipment, or buy new.. that is the question.

Your thoughts?

.. could you also look up the 37" to 40" LCD units of the same makes and A.N.Other like Samsung please for comparison purposes. When I bought my own Samsung plasma, it was the best value product with all the functionality and much of the quality of the Sony and Panasonic (which by the way are really the same machines rebadged!)

Cheers in advance.

The prices of entry level plasmas have crashed to 5500 Riyals around $ 1500 ..Sony and Panasonic may be around $ 2000/-...If you get a good deal selling yours in US..decide accordingly...

People do recommend LCD more around 40" ranges and Plasmas above them..LCDsare also of the same range..with SONY and PANASONIC being the most expensive in the Gulf because of Brand value...(m no expert)..

Again the prices are sliding by the day...

I'd really like to know too before I sell my 42" pride and joy!

if i had a plasma tv i'd bring as they do not take a great deal of space and they should have a variable voltage

i have no idea about prices really but would think it would be similar to the US, probably there a little cheaper, although someone else would be able to tell better

here's a couple of sites for some elctronics

http://www.modernhome.com.qa/modern/default.htm

http://www.jumboqatar.com/

I think both are a bit pricey

http://www.carrefourqatar.com/carrefourqatar/English/home-eng.htm

Like Walmart

http://www.luluhypermarket.com/

Arabic Walmart

Family Food Centre .. sells some

plus many many more

Can I ask how much are the plasma TVs in Qatar or will beast666 give me a hard time about them working with Oil as well and needing a refinery beside it to work :-)

laudgi7, thanks I totally understand that beast666 is joking. I am playing along, waiting for someone to provide me with real help like yourself

Thanks for the information. That's all I needed to know that I shouldnt bother carrying one from here with variable voltage

akronica ... i case you misunderstand again beast 666 was being sarcastic

there are many microwaves of whatever make whether well known or not ... probably more that you find in most western countries and the same goes with all electricals.

i would not advise it unless there a variable 110/220V and not only 110V as in Qatar they are 220/240V

i guess nobody told u, in qatar we have no elec we use oil lamps...

please introduce us to 1100 kw microwave as we are in stone age here.

beast666

So whats the gallon capacity on the ones that run with Oil. I might think of buying from there

I meant to ask if the microwaves are like 1100 KW or just 900 etc.

By Beast666• 15 Aug 2006 21:52
Beast666

Bring a electric generator to run your "good" microwave, because in qatar we only have oil.

of any UK shipping companies they would recommend, or better still, have used, to bring across our electrical and other vaulables from England to Doha?

I'm investigating who might ship for me. Cheers for the valuable advice!

Well, feel free to ignore my opinion, seeing as I am a chick, ;) but my 2p worth....

Assuming it is decent stuff, bring the home theatre equipment at the very least - it's impossible to find decent equipment (especially speakers) here in Doha. We had to go to Dubai to buy ours.

Gaming - if you are talking about a console, then it might be more cost effective to just replace it here... not 100% on that, though - if yours is chipped, and had all the games loaded on it - that might be worth bringing...

TV... that's a harder one. Certainly you can replace it here fairly easily, although cost comaprison, I can't comment on. Whether it would get here in one piece.... well, let's just say I wouldn't be shipping without insurance anyway, so that wouldn't really bother me. Besides, my +1 is the "movie-ophile" and I am the audio-phile... so there are my priorities....

Cheers! :)
