Sheraton to participate in ‘Iftar for Cabs’ charity initiative
Sheraton Doha members of staff taking part in the ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative last year

By Peter Townson
As part of the Starwood Hotels and Resorts Middle East ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative, Sheraton Doha’s general manager and other members of staff will present food and drink packages to taxi drivers passing by the front of the hotel.
The charity initiative, which was introduced last year, will involve more than 30 hotels from nine countries in the region, with members of staff distributing food packs to enable drivers to break their fast while working.
The hoteliers will take part in the drive on August 9, when they will distribute the packs at the main entrances to their hotels throughout the Iftar hour.
Sheraton general manager, Steven Kalczynski, said: “At Sheraton Doha we work so closely with our local taxi drivers and appreciate all they do for our guests. It is only fitting we give back in this holiest of months.”
Senior vice president and regional director of Starwood Middle East, Guido de Wilde said: “Ramadan is a very special time for our hotels, who along with their own promotions, come together to support this initiative.  It is because of their dedication and spirit that ‘Iftar for Cabs’ has been such a huge success.
“The main purpose of this initiative is to give back to cab drivers who are always on the go and can struggle to find time to break their fast during Ramadan - this initiative has been widely appreciated by cab drivers across the region in the past and we look forward to repeating it again this year,” he added.

A great gesture by the hotels. The taxi drivers have a hard life and will appreciate the help given. As for Karwa, the less said the better :O(

TB, its no doubt a noble gesture by the hotel management but how does it indicate that the cab drivers rely on them for breaking their fasts. I guess they have atleast the means to treat themselves with a decent Iftaar.

They wouldn't be in this bisiness if they couldn't afford two square meals for themselves with the money they earn.

I agree with you fully that their employers should have taken care....but having experience of travelling a lot in taxis I can say that most are unhappy with their jobs ...they have to meet stiff target (they need to pay 265 QR per day ) to the company and they have 11 hrs shift....which i think is v v tough

Whilst I think this wonderful charitable gesture of the participating hotels is a lovely idea. I can't help thinking that these drivers should not be relying upon charity. Shouldn't their employers be ensuring their needs are taken care of?
