Brilliant Pakistan (Cricket Team)

Dear Sir,

Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties and nowhere else is it more evident than in the T20 format which seems to uphold the much-cherished triumph of the underdog, time after time. How else do you explain India winning the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 as rank outsiders, the non-glamorous Rajastan Royals bagging the inaugural IPL in 2008, the bottom-ranked Deccan Charger’s triumph in IPL 2009 and the least-fancied Pakistan team lifting this year’s World Cup?

When Pakistan lost the practice game against India before the start of the recent tournament, they looked totally out of sorts and their captain Younus Khan seemed confused and diffident. However, once the tournament started, they lifted their game match by match and peaked in performance during the semifinal and final against the two most formidable opponents of the tournament.

As if guided by their one-time coach Bob Woolmer from heavens, all their tactical moves succeeded, be it holding back Umar Gul to bowl in the second half of the innings, promotion of Shahid Afridi up the batting order or bringing back ICL-returned Abdul Razzaq to replace the more successful Sohail Tanveer. The manner in which they outplayed Sri Lanka in the final, that too after losing the toss, was absolutely brilliant, striking vital blows with the ball and executing the run chase to perfection.

After suffering international isolation for the last four months for no fault of theirs, the Pakistani players wanted to do something special for the people of their country and how well they did it! Therein lies the incomprehensible connection between sporting success and national pride. Hats off to Pakistan!

Great moment for the Pakistani cricket. They desrved it in the way they performed yestrday. Lanka deffntly had an upper head but failed terribly on the turf.

Much needed victory @ a time when the cricket and country needed a moral boost.

Superb India overwhelm Pakistan

ICC WORLD TWENTY20

Venues: Lord's, The Oval, Trent Bridge Date: 3 June 2009

Gambhir scored an superb 52 not out to help India to victory

India secured an impressive nine-wicket victory over fierce rivals Pakistan at the Oval in their final warm-up match for the ICC World Twenty20.

Pakistan posted 158 for six but India cruised home with 18 balls to spare thanks to openers Rohit Sharma (80) and Gautum Gambhir (52 not out).

Earlier, South Africa continued their positive build-up to the tournament with a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka.

And Scotland were beaten by the Netherlands by seven wickets.

A large, excitable Oval crowd were treated to a scintillating game of cricket, played out between rivals India and Pakistan.

Despite the early loss of Shazaib Hasan, Pakistan hammered the Indian bowlers for 45 in the first four overs thanks to 25 from Ahmed Shahzad and 19 from Kamran Akmal.

India hit back though with three wickets in five balls to temporarily halt the Pakistan momentum - the next boundary did not come for another 42 deliveries.

606: DEBATE

Impressive win. Just poor death bowling, that is the worry

manutdindian

A partnership of 50 between Misbah-ul-Haq and Younus Khan steered Pakistan past the 100-mark before the latter was stumped by Mahendra Singh Dhoni off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh for 32.

A useful and unbeaten 25 was added by next man Yasir Arafat, with Misbah finishing on 37 not out as Pakistan posted 158 for six.

India's run chase was measured but ruthless as openers Gambhir and Sharma efficiently took the game away from Pakistan.

Without ever resorting to unnecessarily forceful shot-playing the two moved along at roughly nine an over until their partnership was broken, nineteen runs short of victory when Sharma was caught by Shahzad off Mohammad Aamir for 80.

Dhoni joined Gambhir and the two saw India to a comfortable nine-wicket win with three overs remaining, the winning run coming courtesy of a wide.

A subcontinent Final ;-) cool.

It was Dilahsan for Lanka, whereas Once again Afridi stars and takes the team on his shoulders through the semi hurdle.

Second concecutive T20 Final for Pak. Good luck to them for the Golden chance to bring home what they lost between the lip n cup last time.

Nothing can be predicted... will surely be a treat to watch :)

Even early Departure of Australia was a Shock...

Pak vs West Indies....

Interesting.....

Politically speaking... Pakistan Should win....

It need these such catalysts to bring back the trust of International cricketing Authorities.. and start International Matches in Pakistan again...

for West Indies.. After the glory days of 70's and early 80's..

And downfall of Dominance of Australian System of Manufacturing good Players....

Its either time to repeat History... Or some other team shall pretty soon fill in the spot for invincible ...

WI have not won anything for ages...

yet Again... SA screws it up....

Now I know.. Why Napoleon said - "I would prefer a lucky Genera; over a Good one.. "..lol

Bravo - FYI -

Current Test Ranking

Team Matches Points Rating

Australia 42 5361 128

South Africa 45 5360 119

India 47 5498 117

Sri Lanka 34 3680 108

England 50 5041 101

Pakistan 22 2197 100

West Indies 34 2896 85

New Zealand 34 2798 82

Bangladesh 23 0 0

Anyways it is not tht I ll support Indian tests only coz they win..

Even if they Loose for another 3 yrs in a row... and are standing against the strongest of West Indian team of 70's...

I ll support India... Even if it means I m the only man standing in the stadium with Indian Flag...

Cricket is more than Wins and loses ... It is the hope of Winning tht counts and matters...

I was anyways saying as a cricket fan.. not a player though... jus a spectator...

I like seeing test matches....

Even the bowling order... the batting order...

Pitch conditions.. fielding positions....

Everythin is important..

Bowlers have time to experiment..

Batsmen entertain even with the rock solid defenses...

More than the bat and the ball.. it is the mental tussle tht adds glamor to those five days...

even if it is a draw.. it is worth the watch...

It is like a chess match goin on for 5 days... :)

And... and..

The best part is... even if your Gal fren calls in the middle.. or wife asks to go shoppin...

in those long hours...

You miss nothing... lol...

VB - lol... another Essay... sorry but had to put my points...

If the quick 4's and 6's entertain the majority...

Unfortunately I belong to the small sect... which enjoy true essence of Cricket...

Else I prefer Football over T20....

When the team wins test series... tht shows we play good...

Unlike majority... if given a chance.. I like watching test matches....

That is wht cricket all about..

Skills.. stamina... patience.. n loads of brains...

90 Mins Game... nothin to beat Football...

combine with experimenting in a crucial do or die match is absolute non sense.

Straight route to South Africa to regain the WC T20 CROWN being the ancient T20 playing team, will really be great to see them competing with NZ, WI and SL....

T20 format is most volatile/futile, one baller and one batsman could change the direction of the Game, it is purely a short form of Team game, Team with superb performance in all 3 departments (Batting, Balling n Feilding) will WIN.....

My prediction goes with SOUTH AFRICA!!! seems most professional team so far.

**Supporting clue was last match played by SA Vs NZ, SA won by ONE run concluded on the last ball.

It is after all T20, we don't know when Dilshan, Jaya's of SL would click or Gayle may become Gayla (mad), Bravo turns to be MoM........Any underdog can take the trophy!

KIwi v/s SA was an intersting match. Two professional teams met on a low scoring game. Hats off to Smith for the way he faught it out and tied the Kiwing just for a run behind. cool

Aussies - ROFL , Looked like a college team to me.

Lanka looks solid, But again ,its all which team performs in that short 20 overs time.

And we can watch the South Africans do the 'choke'...

For any South African fans who feel offended... HEY!!! SO WHAT? We gave you IPL???? ;-)

wishful thinking...

Anyway, Whatever happens... no Aussies please...

Symonds should move to England and play against the Aussies and beat them in the Ashes

and get a photograph taken holding the Ashes in one hand while drinking from a bottle of beer held in the other :-))

BTW... I guess most people know this already but all matches featuring India as well as all semi-finals and finals are being shown on DD National!!

Which means that there are a few people who get to watch the match without paying a dime!!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I was channel surfing... REALLY!!! FOR FREE??? Twenty-20?!?!

verisimilitude...I didnt watch the entire match...

But from the looks of it the Dutch were very acrobatic and agile....in the field....no easy single from them....because of this they are able to keep the match very very tight....

By Arien• 6 Jun 2009 11:29
Arien

Verisim - Yup , i missed the Kiwis out.. India lost to them in the previous match.

Jack - It is unpredictable, couple of overs can shift the game to the favor of either team.

Look at yestrdays match. England made a decent total. BUt it was not their day , atleast 4 run out chances , closer ones .. were missed . Broad himself had 3 chances. Hd it been wickets, they would have comfortably beaten netherlands.

You need bowlers who can hit the blockhaul concecutively lol. especially during the slog overs. :)

You've forgotten a very important team on that list...

The KIWIS...

Did you forget how the Bangalore Royal Challengers won three matches due to the heroics of one player?

And how individual heroics helped Kolkota?

And also Daniel Vettori...

They are a very strong team too... they deserve to be on that list...

I didn't watch the match, but really jackmohan... the dutch... the best fielding side??

I don't think Kiwis are favorites but they are in the top 5 for sure... definitely ahead of West Indies, England and Pakistan in my book...

By anonymous• 6 Jun 2009 11:02

Twenty 20 is tricky...

Any team can win with anybody....not like Test matches & One Day Matches....eg the underdog Netherlands beat England!!!

Ok they had very good fielding ...I think it would be one of the best fielding sides in the game.

Twenty 20 is tricky...

One has to hit through the line ...if it connects it is a 4 or if its a mishit a catch....

Couple of overs can change a game.....like an over full of boundaries or an over with only singles.

Was there any maiden bowled in a Twenty 20 game?

By Arien• 6 Jun 2009 07:44
Arien

hmm yeah - 20-20s are unpredictable.

Bad news for Aussies sending back symmons.

Brit - Aussies will be nocked out in the semis. :). I forsee an India v/s South Africa Finals. :)
