I was in Doha for the first time - my view
I was in your host city Doha for the last 5 days. I was staying at the Rydges PH and was pleasantly suprised to see a vibrant expat community of all creeds and colours getting on with one another. Well done guys and thank you all to who I met during the few late nights I spent there and made me feel welcome.
I think the locals can take a leaf out your book as I found, from my observation and indeed brief interaction with them, that they can be somewhat obnoxious. I found they were very negative to the "Hindi" community (people from the subcontinent) but not so to the whiteys :). They are a very unappreciative bunch (forgive me for using the THEY word)
Doha does have its charm in a funny way. Its no Dubai but I guess Dubai is not for all of us. I liked the way the place marries the old with the new. The Bank Street region being the old and the corniche region the new. It does work.
I was particularly impressed with the development work going on around the QFC. If I was to work in Doha I guess it would have to be in this area.
Quad biking in the sealine resort was great fun.
the weather was fab and reminded me of a good spring day here in blitey.
If I get a good job offer with a western law firm based in the new Doha area I hope to see you guys again.
TC and happy new year.
Jauntie,
I am now actively looking for working for a good international firm which has an office in Qatar. I was head hunted for the role which was offered to me by the local firm. It was a good educational experience which taught me 2 things:
1) I can work in Doha
2) I cant work for a local outfit
Yes £ in the City is good but taxes are horrendous! Furthermore im not a big fan of London. If you come across any opps in Doha please let me know.
Regards
Dancing Tiger
will you look again at working in the ME?
I've worked with Solicitors in the UK - good money there! Why not join one of the City firms, they usually have offices around the world where you might feel more 'comfortable' and may not have to get your hands dirty nor your pride hurt :D
Yes I have concluded, after trying to negotiate with my prospective Qatari employer a better package, that I cannot work for a local firm. Although the principal was trained in the UK, I saw a side to him that I did not like. It was an arrogant side which said TAKE MY OFFER
OR FORGET IT. I told him to do one! UK 1 - QATAR LOCAL 0
Regards,
Dancing Tiger
Buddy If u get employed with the local trading firms then dont take up the offer as it sucks....Even the banking work culture and atmosphere is characterized by huge politics, people are not open to the western culture, exhibit the maximum antisocial personality disorder.....
People are ready to attack the west out here......At the same time the hindi community also actively engage themselves or get influenced to some extent by the locals and play dirty politics against you regardless of whether u r good at ur work or capable of showing improvement signs....
glad you enjoy Qatar DT.
I will be doing the sleeping now that Im back in the Uk until i back to work on the 2nd Jan!
slept very little in doha and now feeling the effects - the pints of red bull is still in the system! Watching ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES now in front of my open fire with the outside temp near freezing.
