Whiskas or Purina is fine for your cat or you can buy Royal Canin from the vets - mine will only eat the Purina dry biscuit! Feed your cat what it enjoys but don't give them too much meat - once a day is more then enough as long as they have clean, fresh water and dry biscuit available all day long. As a treat you can give your cat a can of tuna in oil every now and then which they love and is really good for their skin and fur. It keeps it shiny!!

You shouldn't need to bath your cat but you might need to brush him if he has long hair.

The vets will tell you how old the cat is, which vaccines it needs and when, when you should get him castrated, how often he needs deworming etc.

MAJID, you can get the granules from Carrefour / FFC. I cant recall the name, I'll check tonight and let you know.

As for food, you should be able to buy "special" food for your Persian kitty. (Cat food specifically for Persians). I get my cat food from the vets, and sometimes sneak them some whiskas (which according to my vet is KFC for cats).

... for check-up to the Veterinary Surgery and they have the right food there for your cat. The Vet Surgery number is 4367187 and they are very helpful and attentive. How old is your cat, and is it a female or a male?

You should avoid wet food for your cat, specially if it is young. Keep to the dry food only. You will notice the difference in the toilet habits - with my 3 cats, if I use wet food they just smell SO bad after going to the toilet. If I use the dry food from the Vet they have no problem at all going to the toilet and do so regularly.

You can't force a cat to enjoy a bed - every cat will chose its own place to sleep and to rest.

Please don't forget you are talking to experienced cat owners and people who work at vets and shelters who are trying to help you.

We know what can go wrong and even if you keep your cat indoors, there will be a day when someone leaves a door or window open and she might escape. You might be lucky and she just sits in the garden, or she might wander off. You should have a collar and ID tag on her ALL the time just in case she does get out. Unfortunately cats that are kept inside all the time are more likely to get hit by a car if they get out because they have never seen them before.

No-one is saying you don't have money - but you yourself said that you can't take her to the vet until next month because you spent all your money this month. Personally I would have bought only ONE bed instead of three and I would have taken her for a check up and vaccinations.

MAJID there's actually cat litter thats sandy...not sand as in from the dunes. No one here is attacking you just relax already. You asked for advice, when we give it to you you're all guns blazin??! Your words were you got "1 litter sand" ...anyway what I was saying is there's cat litter made of granules which is better than the sandy one IMO.

Catsitter DVD? LOL. Here's a thought. Why dont YOU spend time with the cat and when you're away let the cat think of ways of amusing himself....geez.

Majid, kittens usually have worms, so she will need to go to the vet's for de-worming, otherwise she will not receive proper nutrition and can possibly infect you.

on your new cat. I hope you take very good care of it and love it very much. Please remember to spay or neuter your pet as soon as the vet advises. There are too many abandoned/unloved cats in Doha already, don't add to the numbers. Best of luck!

MAJID your kitty will probably prefer the granuled cat litter. God's gift to all cats ;)I wouldnt go for the sand you bought.

Dont forget to get the kitty some toys and play with her/him: though mine prefer the strangest of things like hairbands, eyebrow brush - oh well whatever makes them happy

I'm not saying cats get ill everyday!!! But what if the cat was to get hit by a car??? What if the cat got sick at home and you had no idea what was wrong??? That would not put the cat in an ideal situation if you could not afford to take her to the vets!

And I dont care if you do not like my comments, you need to understand that having a pet requires time and money which I think thats something you dont seem to have much of!

having a pet is a responsibility and no matter what somebody told you, go and let her check.

We are bringing our kittens always to the Qatar Veterinary Center and we are totally happy with their service.

Responding to my own post... I did some internet searching on my Persian and looking for a link to the blue eyes and deafness and ran across this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_cat

Pretty interesting and worth a look.

why don't you google and research everything about keeping a cat so you are prepared properly!!! Cats are bloody beautiful and intelligent animals and shouldn't be considered as a toy or something you fancy on a whim! They need love and attention, Persians need regular grooming and attention...whats wrong with a faithful moggy??

By Jhopp• 20 Sep 2009 21:34
Jhopp

We were unfortunate enough to buy a persian from one of the shops, not knowing any better. She was an adorable white kitten. Had infection in her ears and eyes within days of bringing her home. Had ringworm, which passed on to my GF.. yuck! Then within a few days figured out she was completely deaf.

After taking into QatarVets I was inquiring about the deafness and the woman at the counter immediately asked if she had blue eyes. I thought it was a strange question, but apparently its a genetic trait that the albinos are deaf! .. not sure how accurate it is, but it was a strange coincidence.

All of that said. We adore our little bundle of fluff. Owning a deaf cat makes the training / kitten process really tough, but she is extremely affectionate and now in good health.

Do yourself a favor and do your research. Get one from one of the reputable Clinics / QAWS rescues.

Have you found your Persian, Majid? Because I have one that someone paid a lot of money for here in Doha and then dumped outside in the middle of the summer. She's absolutely beautiful (if a little high-maintenance) so if you ever decide to dump your kitty, please let me know first.

Just be ready for your cat to be sick because the pet shops are disgusting places that breed diseases. Make sure you take your kitten to the vet as soon as you buy it so they can tell you if it has ringworm because you can catch it from your cat.

The only vets you should go to are Qatar Veterinary Centre 421-6405 or The Veterinary Surgery 436-7187. You will pay more then QR2000 in the first couple of days so I hope you've been saving for a while!!!!

That's what it costs to have a cat as a pet. If someone can't afford it - they shouldn't get one.

If you are just a kid and no car that usually means no money. So how the hell do you expect to look after a cat with all the things it will need???

I think it would be cruel on the animal should you get one as you may not be able to provide for it!

yeah i second chelsea cuz i had a cat but because i couldnt take care of her i sent her back to lebanon

and i just want to add that cats needs too much caring and you must clean them well specialy the persian and ofcourse you must bring a special brush for their hair otherwise you will arrive to a point where you must shave all of her hair and beleive me you dont want to see her with no hair :S it looks like an alien :S and second in certain age cats needs a partner so she will pee in all the place if you didnt get her one :S and third cats like to stretch their nails so be carefull and watch your furniture and be sure that you are always cutting her nails :S forth cats are like a balloon as much as you give them food they will eat exept if they didnt like the food you gave so be worry cuz if they didnt like certain act from you they like to revenge and also you dont like to have a bloody bite from their sharp small teeth ouch :S dont feed her also something with sugar she will turn to blind :S

fifth there is for sure special sand for their wee-wee you have to bring it and always clean after them and change it always cuz the smell is so yucky when it is full :S

you must have patience when ur cat is under a mental disorder and sometimes she fly just like a ball jumping at the sofas slipping at the floor :S and my last advise is to keep the cat in a room with aircondition if not she will be cooked at the end of the days :D

And then there's boarding the cat when you are on vacation which is a minimum of QR40 per night.

When you leave Qatar you would need to take the cat with you which will cost a minimum of QR1000 depending on where you go and how the cat travels.

If your cat gets sick then each trip to the vet will probaly be a minimum of QR250.

It would have to have the tri-cat and rabies boosters done every year for QR360.

B2D - He wouldn't be allowed one from us as adopters have to be over 18 :D

Majid - You have been extrememly rude about QAWS in the past but seeing as you are determined to have a kitten I'll help you out - for the sake of the cat though.

Kitten from a pet shop - QR1,500 minimum

Vet consultation - QR180 (because it will be sick)

Ringworm medication - QR100 (if you buy from a pet shop)

Tri-cat vaccinations - QR180 (at 8 weeks old)

Rabies vaccination - QR180 (at 12 weeks old)

Tri-cat booster - QR180 (at 12 weeks old)

De-worming medication - QR60 (every 8 weeks or so)

Neutering - QR600

Cat Travel Crate - QR200

Cat Litter Tray - QR40

Bowls, Toys, Bed, Brushes etc - QR150

Cat Litter - QR150 per month

Cat Food - QR150 per month

Grooming - QR150 per visit

You MUST keep the cat in air-conditioning or it will die in the heat. You musn't feed it bones as it will choke.
