I love QL, BUT !!

I think QL is an amazing site. It provides a service to expats and locals alike. It allows us to interact, meet and get to know each other. It allows us to exchange views.. BUT ..

Am I the only one who thinks that the hijacking and constant banter is getting a bit too much ?

Let's have fun discussing / arguing issues... There's MSN for chatting :O)

Although I get involved in the chit chat, I too agree it can be a little excessive. I don't agree with removing it completely as some of the banter can be quite entertaining, but it should certainly be toned down a bit.

Ex, just ignore the pc stuff....or just use "other" ;) terms to describe it...works for me. :)

But yes, it seems that if Westerners are described by their nationality , it is perfectly fine...but "other "people, ...oh dear! I think it's funny! :P

Now, just imagine this...if a Westerner would openly say how proud he/she is of her/his country....all hell would break loose...but if "others" do it, well, they are entitled, non?????

chit-chatting. And I am not externalising and don't know what you want me to own up to.

There are specific people who are guilty of this behaviour here and when they hijack topics for chit-chatting they are breaking the forum rules. It may not be pc to single them out and refer to their nationality in order to identify them, but imo they need to be made aware of the fact that their behaviour is irritating and against the forum rules.

By verisimilitude• 30 Sep 2010 23:14

BUT, you live and learn...you learn how to defuse, defend and counter...takes time, but you'll get there.

You have been a member here for 9 weeks and name calling against you started some time back (You said it yourself), so how about a little bit of introspection.

If you reached the end of your tether in such a short time then maybe you should not be a member of any online forum, things can get pretty rough here when people are armed with anonymity.

I used to see a number of threads worth discussing when I joined initially, nothing of interest now.

Any one can generalise, and we call them fools. Major junk of the users are indians, may be.Its obvious you will find them in all groups n types. Minority will have their issues, gota live with it mate

but I have seen you bring your sensitivity to my remarks here brought into another thread. I also see you choose not to acknowledge the fact that I clearly stated that this is not an issue of all indians being chit-chatters, but a means of identifying a certain group that is engaged in constant hijacking through chit-chatting.

The only person making this "nationality bashing" is you, tinkerbell.

Indian? or Chit-Chatter? I don't believe either would come under the banner of "name calling" except for the ridiculously oversensitive party who recognizes something negative about themselves.

This particular group is Indian and it was a way of identifying them. Tinkerbell keeps bringing up the Indian part because she recognizes herself as one of the group I am referring to.

ex.ex.expat said I would suggest a LOVE FORUM for the ...

love-lorn Filippinas and a Chat Room for the Indian Hijacking Chit-Chatters. We all know who they are. Would make qatarliving much better, imo.

There is a lot of helpful information on this site for people coming to Qatar (Helped me a lot) and at the same time it resembles a yahoo chat room. Pick and choose whatever suits you.

By ex.ex.expat• 30 Sep 2010 11:48
ex.ex.expat

After all, I thought that was your nationality. But since you keep bringing it up I can only assume that you are offended being referred to as Indian.

FYI, it is a small group of the Indians on here who are the biggest chit-chatters, frequently hijacking threads. So now you make an excuse and say you are "helping" QL by hijacking threads as a means of quashing them.

So you are breaking a forum rule for the betterment of Qatarliving. Do I have that right?

By s_isale• 30 Sep 2010 11:44

and this hijacking for chit-chatting is most definitely against the forum rules. FULL STOP. There really doesn't need to be all this discussion about it if the moderators enforce the rule. And give that particular group (who know who they are) a room somewhere so they can all impress each other with how wonderful they are since they have so many friends and are part of such a unique little circle ;)

Rizks I have been around since June or maybe it was may 2009, I can only comment from those times but I am sure if I dig deeper, there will be more stupid threads in the past as well.

Nobody starts any thread, everyone expects others to start sensible threads for them. How should someone else know what's sensible for them?

Post a topic on whatever you want to discuss, I don't see any serious topic thread being hijacked or chat going on there.

What happens in funnies can be ignored or do people expect to comment only on the joke in funnies. We will have 100 lol or good one posts, that's all.

QL chat forum shall be created, so chatters can chat like MIRC style...lately, i have found people talking about each other and just wasting time out of boredom

By Ice Maiden• 29 Sep 2010 23:10
Ice Maiden

oh.... so Now I AM getting personal. Who started it? I posted my OPINION on this subject. YOU said you knew me?? I don't know you. You just like the others are an online ID to me.

And I am very offended when you label me a chit chatter. I do not chit chat. I post my take of the topic, which i am entitled to. Not necessary it has to match with your view.

we used to know each other earlier

and I used to dislike you

But now that the personal touch is gone

QL needs a chatting functionality which can support multi-user chatting... oooow that would be the day

By Ice Maiden• 29 Sep 2010 22:35
Ice Maiden

Different people, different tastes, Verisi.

Some come to discuss, others to have fun online. Let them be. Ignore/comment...we have the option don't we?

Besides QL was a small community before, people knew each other. Now it grown, too many members, so along the way the "personal touch" is lost. We have to accept that change happens.

By nomerci• 29 Sep 2010 22:28
nomerci

Yes verisi, nail on head!

By verisimilitude• 29 Sep 2010 22:26
verisimilitude

Its less multicultural now. Tolerance levels are lower. People are less inclined to engage themselves.

You know things are going the wrong way when people are using the recent comments feature more often that the tracking feature. When new threads grow very fast but old threads die quickly even though they are interesting.

You use the recent comment feature so you can socialize with whoever is online quickly, instant gratification. When you use the tracking feature, you engage yourself in a topic that is important to you and you are willing to wait some time before you get a reply to your comment.

I miss those threads that used to go on for weeks like slowly simmering coal on a long cold night, now its all bang bang bang fireworks :-)

By nomerci• 29 Sep 2010 22:19
nomerci

verisi, way back then QL was a lot more"multicultural". Now it is not. And those who are different, will be bullied. Yes, back then, if a person made a half way intelligent comment, they would have no problem...now if a person makes an intelligent comment, things don't go so well for them...unless they are "the same" as the others.

That is my impression.

Of course then there was some bullying too...but that usually happened to dimwits...and it was usually done in a humourous way.

By verisimilitude• 29 Sep 2010 22:15
verisimilitude

But I have a feeling that it smokes out a certain section, the newbies. I remember that when I first came to QL, anyone who made an intelligent comment was accepted immediately and would get engaged very soon. The regulars used to draw out comments from the newbies because everyone was eager to have more participants. Now I tend to feel that there is an invisible entry barrier, its less participative. Newbies get bullied so often.

Earlier I used to put in an effort to improve the quality of my contributions because something worthwhile always used to attract participation. Now I don't bother because most of the time, I feel like my comments are not even being read!

But then you see these two liner threads with no substance zooming to 200 posts in a matter of hours just cos it was started by someone who knows someone else... and then you begin to wonder if substance really matters to anyone any more...

By anonymous• 29 Sep 2010 22:09
anonymous

Most of the threads where chit chat happens are about love life or lack of it or lonely guys or lonely girls or cheating husbands or suspicious wife. Those threads should be deleted anyway or given a separate section.

By shapil• 29 Sep 2010 22:07

I agree with the statement "chit-chatters do so as a way of marking their territory and feeling like they belong somewhere" i observed it initially also but then accepted it as a part of the game. This is the wage of popularity of this website i think.

By ex.ex.expat• 29 Sep 2010 22:03
ex.ex.expat

It has to do with internet forum decorum. Verisimilitude is right, the chit-chatters do so as a way of marking their territory and feeling like they belong somewhere. On the one hand it is pretty pathetic behaviour, but more importantly it is against the Forum rules.

Some of the ones posting in this thread are the worst offenders. I can only hope they will give some thought to whether what we are saying applies to them and control themselves in the future. But I rather doubt it.

By happygolucky• 29 Sep 2010 21:51

Ice Maiden... I liked your balanced opinion....

Since I joined QL I have on many occassions tried to push the point through that just by being on QL for a longer duration doesnt make anyone wiser so far as debating or discussing an issue is concerned... we just need to relax the acceptance levels for new members a bit ... with new members joining in give them sometime to settle down, dont rubbish them as soon as they appear.

By Ice Maiden• 29 Sep 2010 21:46
Ice Maiden

C'mon everyone. Look at it this way. Qatar has a "floating" population. People change, make up of the site changes. Some prefer discussion, getting information, others look at it as a way to "connect".

The oldies think the QL had good times in the past. The newbies like the QL the way it is now. There is enough space for everyone....so accomodate.

Sorry for being rude, but they remind me of dogs that urinate to demarcate their territories. Its a means of announcing one's status, group acceptance and clout from the bonds they have formed with their online 'gang'.

Good for them, but I say, GET A ROOM

It comes from inherent insecurities and its a manner of online symbiotic ego massage.

By verisimilitude• 29 Sep 2010 21:27
verisimilitude

I sometimes feel compelled to comment on every thread I read. But I've come to learn that is pointless. Unless you have something relevant to say, don't comment. I don't keep myself active on more than five threads at a time. I restrict myself to those threads and monitor them using the track function.

Its also about the quality of the comments, try to make comments that have some genuine substance, wit or humor.

And then there's the 'clique' mentality. I've noticed that there are certain people whose threads attract a lot of attention. That has two sides, it keeps the site active. But on the flip side, quantity sometimes comes with a compromise of quality.

We have to be more promiscuous in our commenting behavior. There are some less outspoken members who have something genuine to say and its important they feel welcome and can be drawn to a genuine and meaningful discussion. Sometimes I feel they even get bullied away by the regular members. Often for posting a topic that has been discussed already, but a newbie has to be forgiven for that and has to be told that the topic has been discussed already.

it’s happening coz of some newbie’s they just come here to chat and to get the attention, and it clearly shows in some recent threads. there was one today and one few days before .. each and every thread they make it personally in midway and talk about what they did last night, their meet up, their lover stories, sending PM each other and ask them to check and reply etc....

each and every thread is being hijacked :(. not good ...

rishi... with new members joining the site everyday and some among the existing ones trying to stir things up by creating new ID's, IMO it would be impossible to sustain a trend. Checks and balances would always be required.

By anonymous• 29 Sep 2010 20:09

nomerci,

i strongly feel that initially, there should be strict moderation on the subject matter of the original posts..

once the trend is set, the QLers wouldnt post nonsense threads. if the subject is strong, relevant and informative, i am sure hijacks would be much less.

By happygolucky• 29 Sep 2010 20:06
happygolucky

Users discretion can be biased ... mods can be neutral to an issue/ user/ post/thread or atleast they are expected to be so...else if the users were so responsible there was no need for mods in first place.

By nomerci• 29 Sep 2010 20:01
nomerci

rishimba, a little bit of everything...nothing wrong with that. And there is, to my knowledge, no creme de la creme in Qatar....anyhow, as I said, why do people have to go cry to others, why can't they, themselves, take care of busiess? I am pretty sure that this constant whining to the mods is why the mods are heavyhanded now.

By anonymous• 29 Sep 2010 19:44
anonymous

well, the fate of a thread is mainly decided by the subject matter of its original post...

if we all want to things to change here for good, mods should first filter the original posts. not all topics should be allowed to be published.
