Scientists have discovered a planet that they think is similar to Earth. They're calling it Proxima b and it is just 4.2 light years from Earth. (Reuters)
Astronomers have long suspected that the star Proxima Centauri could be home to a planet, but proof had been elusive. Dim red dwarf stars like Proxima have been found to host billions of small, closely orbiting planets throughout the galaxy. Now a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature provides the best evidence yet for a tantalizingly close target on which to seek alien life.
Its so inspiring, it's our closest star," Lisa Kaltenegger, a Cornell astronomer who wasn't involved in the new study, told The Washington Post. "A planet next door. How much more inspiring can it get?"

It is indeed very "close". 4 light-years are about 36 trillion kilometer. It'll take a few thousand years for our fastest space ship to get there. and even radio-waves need four years. Forget it!
