Hung out to dry ........

"Robin Campbell, the head of the three Compass International Schools in Qatar, says an inquiry has been launched to get to the bottom of the incident.

In a statement sent to Doha News this evening, he said:

Compass International School, Doha apologies for any distress this story may have caused. As a long standing school in the community we place very high value on the traditions, culture and beliefs of our host country Qatar, the region and Islam.

Campbell added that “appropriate actions will be taken pending the outcome” of the school’s investigation."

Doha News 12 September

In bringing this story to a conclusion.....the outcome of the immediate investigation and the appropriate actions taken was that.....

...Mrs Brackstone-Drake has "left" Compass International School "with immediate effect"........

17 September 2012

NOT a very auspicious start to your Compass career Mr Campbell - responsiblility starts and ends with the Chief Executive - as a parent of a child at the school,I sincerely hope that you are considering YOUR position this evening.

I hope Mrs Brackstone-Drake has a good Employment Lawyer in her corner. Personally, speaking as a HR professional well versed in Employment Law and as a parent, I wish her well.

Good point LP.

It was highly publicized that the coach of the failing team had to go. But all the players remained.

Makes you wonder....

Huh. That's interesting LP. I suppose 'who' is on the team matters as well. Usually (in NZ anyway) if players of high-profile rugby clubs don't turn up to practice in a timely manner, they cannot play. I suppose though, Qatar will purchase outright the worlds' best soccer team in 2021 to go on to win the cup. So as usual, nothing matters and there is never, and ever will be any problem.

Was the teacher new to the school?

I agree . it's the intent or the way the question was asked.

As per Dohanews.. "“Her teacher asked, ‘Why are you wearing the hijab?’ We weren’t certain whether it was appropriate for young girls,” Brackstone-Drake said.

Here, they always fire people for the faults of others. Example: the coach of the Qatari footbal squad. Is he responsible when the players are too lazy to appear for the training? I know this from a player of a Qatari club. They come when THEY want, not when they HAVE to. This mentality results in failures, not the quality of the Brazilian coach!

As I have said, on the face of what we know, a great shame or should that be sham. I hope that Mrs B-D walked away with her pockets crammed full of Compass money and that the school funds do not miss their 30 pieces of silver for I feel that Mr Campbell has, on this occasion, betrayed one of his "followers".

So a teacher was sacked simply for asking why a student chose to wear a hijab? If so, that's absolutely ridiculous. It would also be ridiculous to sack her for refusing the student entry (unless, of course, it was done maliciously), I think the intent of the teacher is what is important here. If she meant to act in inappropriately, then she should be removed. But if, for example, she was unaware of the rules, then the answer would simply be to politely educate her and chastise the principal for not properly orientating the teachers to their school.

Isn't that was good hospitality is all about? If your guest makes an error out of ignorance, do you assault him?

I certainly do want to know..and not for the sake of fueling any gossip or satisfying my curiosity, but for my genuine concern as to whether someone was actually punished for a crime she didn't commit or at least didn't intend on doing.

I might at some point know...will let you know if you want.

be the case with many people Nom. I guess just a handful of people who like to know the truth and stand up for justice will want to know why Mrs Drake decided to take such a drastic decision. Was she indeed "guilty" or just made a scapegoat? Did she really mean any harm or was her genuine innocence made to look all villainous? Will we ever know what truly transpired between her and the kid? Guess not=(

Fathimah, I don't think so. As usual, people will be happy that the "culprit has been punished"...since when do people care about what really happened?

Sorry, but I'm a little lost. Is this over the headscarf incident at the school last week? And was any explanation ever given as to what the school official objected to it?

a lot of unanswered questions, and suspicions, will now arise and the gossip and rumor mills will be going crazy!

It's simple, it's bad press, the school is a business, so the reaction was inevitable.

I have absolutely no idea and I dont suppose you do either. The conversation concerning the onditions of her contract termination will have been conducted between B-D and Campbell............oh and clearly you but no-one else!!It seems to me that she was expediently "removed".

But you said that "..the Father was saying the truth rather than the school." Can you support that assertion or are you just "bandwagoning"?

By stealth• 17 Sep 2012 20:56

Chairboy, did the teacher resign or was she sacked?

By Chairboy• 17 Sep 2012 20:33

@ MaryCath - hence the title of the thread - expedience is often the preferred route when pressure is being applied along the lines that I have seen over the last few days from both the social media side and the authorities side - whilst it maybe a naive perspective, I would have had more respect for Mr Campbell if he had stood by one of his senior staff.......but as you say and in his defence, the investigation may have backed him into an indefensible corner.

In regards to the "Golden good bye" - I do hope that you are right.

@ Stealth ...and u have evidence to back up that staement do you??

well, there seems to be more to it than the initial spin put out by the school through dohanews.

The father was saying the truth rather than the school.

Chairboy - having some experience with people "leaving" positions, I would hope Ms. B-D was encouraged to leave and say nothing further with a helping golden handshake.

Further, given my experience, in order to file a suit and follow through, she would have to do so (a) before she left (and that's usually a 7 - 10 day slot) and (b) be allowed to return for the court date - if she hasn't been banned and is a granted a visa on arrival.

Oh, and of course, she would have to cover all the legal fees before she left and be willing to follow through, including the travel costs IF she is allowed back into the country for the court date - if the suit is heard on that date, or some other, postponements are likely to happen.

I have no direct knowledge of the incident other than what has been published. Unfortunately, she may have been expendable as far as the school is concerned. I hope my first guess is correct and she can move on.
