Hundreds of tyres slashed in Al Saad

Mod Comment : Sarmad Qazi of The Gulf Times is reporting on hundreds of tyres being slashed in Al Saad (article below).

Has anyone here been a victim? Or have your tyres been slashed?

From the Gulf Times:

RESIDENTS of an upscale locality in the Al Saad area woke up to a rude shock yesterday as they found the tyres of hundreds of vehicles parked nearby had been slashed overnight.

The act of mass vandalism unfolded as people came out one by one and approached their vehicles to go to work.
Tyres on regular sedans, SUVs, sports cars – regardless of the year and make – were slit by what the residents described as possibly a Swiss knife. Each damaged tyre had two to three cuts of about 15mm long but deep enough to deflate them.

As the word spread, more residents started finding out that they were among the victims. Some 200 vehicles were estimated to have been vandalised in an area that included the basement parking of a three-storey building complex, covered parking areas of 10 townhouses, the shaded parking of a mosque and the basement parking of a stand-alone building with some 40 flats.

At this building, the felon(s) actually had the audacity – and apparently the time – to bend the security-barrier and enter the basement to carry out the mischief. Even vehicles parked on the pavements and road sides were not spared.
“As much as we are shocked, we are puzzled,” said a Western expatriate.
According to her, both their vehicles – a company-provided one and a private SUV – were vandalised. She said her husband changed the company car’s tyre with the spare one and went to work while the neighbours helped her change the tyre of the SUV. The cost of tyres damaged was in the range of QR200-1,000 per tyre. The total damage is estimated at over QR100,000.

“How can such a thing take place in Qatar? One of the reasons for us to move here was the safety aspect of the country. This is indeed very unpleasant,” one frustrated newcomer said.

A Malaysian couple, who moved to Doha eight months ago, were left dripping in sweat while changing the tyre of their Ford SUV. “This seems very well co-ordinated and is certainly a behaviour-related act,” the husband said.
For most of the SUVs, it was one or both the front tyres that came under the knife, while most of the regular sedans had their rear tyres gashed.

A Toyota Corolla parked outside a mosque, a Mitsubishi Lancer station-wagon and a Nissan Sunny each had all their four tyres slashed.

No pattern was seen in the blatant attack. The raiders have not spared even vehicles left behind by their owners who had gone out of the country on vacation. The only conspicuous factor seems to be “sheer roguery and arrogance”, one of the affected vehicle owners said.

He is a drop out from school, has nothing to do at home. His father should have taken care of this problem. His American mother married his Jordanian father and left USA. She has never gone back to the states to visit her parents. This tells the whole story.

anotgher night passed, another thief visit in some villas.

This time happend inside BEVERLY HILLS compaund, with security. Villas visited during the night while person sleeping inside.

If someone is still considering Qatar a safe land with no security problem, is probably totaly wrong.

I'm sleeping in the ground floor, with my baseball bat. Hope that bastard will come inside......

Actually my car was one among those car. Only realised it at about 10 am, and according to some, it happened the day before..

With population of nearly 2 million, you cannot expect the force of less than 5000 policeman to do a good job..but then again where are they going to get extra reinforcement and will they do it for the sake of money hungry foreigners here..forget it..As long as they are safe behind their four walled 10 feet high wall big villa and getting super special treatment wherever they go, just dream on you foreigner...

Last week my villa plus the 3 neighbouring houses got robbed during the night and this all happened with us sleeping inside, this week two villas in the same area got robbed, and last month 2.

Police came, didnt speak much english, wrote a report in arabic (no idea what was on it) took random fingeprints (without asking who lives in the house so to know which fingerprints to exclude) and never called us again. ( I wonder if they ever watched at least one episode of CSI...)

Today I read 200 cars got vandalised....

SO:

Qatar is NOT such a safe country

Police doesnt seem trained nor interested in doing anything about it, at least in my case.

I just wonder if it had been Qatari houses robbed and Qatari cars vandalised.....

My wife's car tyres got slashed actually, so as the rest of the the cars around the area. We thank Gulf Times actually for making this a highlight, as many police reports were made to the police station but to really get attention so that something were to to be done to solve the problem and to catch the thief we decided to call up the Gulf times, and within half an hour they were in our place taking picture and getting the details... hope with the media publicty, more patrols would be done around the area and building managements in the area do more to enhance security....its very sad that crimes such as this are increasing in Qatar.

Imagine, you have to do it fast and then multiply it for some cars that had 2 or all 4 tyres slashed. Small knife won't cut it - especially for SUV tyres that are much thicker. That's a clue maybe to the CID chaps. Taking fingerprints off the cars also a good idea - Not sure if sand covered car surface leave behind better prints.

Oh dear. Sound like I know how to do it.

I like the idea of police patrol. The ones at Souq Waqif look nice in their uniform. Else maybe such compounds can just collect money from everyone and hire a security guard to do rounds. Most of these things are reactive and a wake up call - like clearing rubbish on rooftops.

When I first came, someone told me - don't need to lock cars and house. Guess not.

All one can tell you is that the al Saad area really isnt a nice place to be - rather similar to Soweto - simply not at all safe. I live in West Bay - an area of peace, beauty, tranquility and, well, intelligent gorgeous people similar to myself - Gin Time me thinks!

1.If you do not treat people in a proper way they become criminals.

2.If you didn’t pay people properly they turn to criminals.

3.If you let people feel like they are slaves. They will try to take over your role. And to do that they will start with criminal activities.

4.Financially happy people they don’t do criminal activities as they do care about tomorrow.

5.If you restrict the move of a curtain group they do criminal actives to whom they thing that they are being treated better then them.

6.Government has to wake up now and take necessary action against this as it will be going to a much more criminals activities in Qatar.

7.And all the mentioned above done by the people which is not educated. (And they are so many in Qatar)

Are some tyre companies/shops involved?

Because:

1. It benefits only them.

2. Only Car-Tyres were targeted.

3. Looks well planned.

4. There should have been more than 2-3 people.

5. The people who did this knew the area well.

Which area is going to be targeted next?

contrary to the opinion of others that those were act of bachelors not allowed entry to the malls as a form of revenge, i think it could have been done by teenagers. cars parked in front of our building often have slash from a pointed metal. there was one incident that these were done by kids who are merely passing by and thought of doing it.

most of the schools if not all these days. These guys got nothing to do but hanging out in the streets and up to late hours in the night. Maybe they were bored and intentionally did that, those crazy ideas that come out of nowhere and cause nothing but problems to others.

Still remember before, they were stealing the cover of the tire [forgot the name] you will wake up to find the your tires would look bold without those ... The damage was less back then, but with this one?

I don't really know why the cars became the target of theses people, first removing the plate numbers from the cars and keep it beside the car, now slashing the tires, hopefully it won't be later stopping people and do something bad to hurt them ...

If you want your car to be safe, then i suggest whenever you people go for shopping specially to the malls take one bachelors with you... LOL

What if bachelors (specially labuorers) are not allowed to go to malls or souq during their weekends then what do you expect from them... ofcourse if nothing to do then EVIL thinking comes to mind and those thinking lead to crime.

3 weeks back our Secretary house was robbed, she went out with her housemaid and kids for shopping to a near by mall, her husband was also aways with his friends, when she returned home within an hours she found the house window smashed and all her jewelry plus heavy cash was gone in wind ???

Maybe the guys had the same problem as this guy:

"A 56-year-old man from the Midwestern US state of Wisconsin has been arrested after shooting his lawn mower in his garden because it would not start.

Keith Walendowski was charged by police in Milwaukee with disorderly conduct and possession of a sawn-off shotgun.

He could face a fine of up to $11,000 and a maximum prison sentence of six-and-a-half years if convicted.

Police officers said Mr Walendowski had told them: "It's my lawn mower and my yard, so I can shoot it if I want."

Police found the shotgun, a handgun and a stungun, as well as ammunition, when they detained Mr Walendowski in the basement of his house.

Witnesses told police that he appeared to have been drinking.

The lawn mower was found sitting outside Mr Walendowski's house, which he shares with his mother, with the rubbish on Friday.

A local retailer said that Mr Walendowski might now have difficulty getting his lawn mower repaired.

"Anything not factory recommended would void the warranty," said Dick Wagner, of Wagner's Garden Mart in Milwaukee".

I got 5 detective question .

1- Why? Probably the motives were racial and jealousy.

2- When? Yesterday night

3- What? Tire slashing of many car tires, probably made with a swiss knife and not some butter knife.

4- Who? Maybe a couple of raiders, a gang or one felon.

5- where? At a high scale neighborhood of ex-patriates.

Where is QCIS ("Qatar Criminal Investigation Services")?

The ongoing "Family Day" Rebuttal?????

Slashing of tyres is not as bad as it could have been I guess. Still it should NOT have happened.

This is definitely not the work of a small group of mischief kids. It must have been a whole gang out there.

Done with a Swiss knife???? I doubt that. I have a Swiss knife and no matter how you think, I dun believe that a Swiss knife could do that to a fully inflated tyre.

I feel sad for all who were effected but now I get more worried and concerned with the motive behind all these actions. Would this be a trend in Doha now?
