doha • A new law to combat human trafficking in Qatar is currently in the making, a human rights workshop here was told yesterday.
Addressing the workshop being organised by the Ministry of Interior, Mohammed Saadon Al Khayali, an expert from the National Office for Combating Trafficking in Humans, said the legal committee at the National Office has been working on the draft (of the law), in collaboration with experts from outside.
Once the draft is ready, the Office will initiate the necessary legal procedures for issuance of the law, he added.
The two-day workshop was opened by the Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani. The event marked Qatar's National Human Rights Day which falls on November 11.
In his speech, the Minister said the workshop reflected Qatar's keenness in accomplishing more success in promoting human rights culture in the society.
Giving a presentation on the activities and achievements of the National Office for Combating Trafficking in Humans, Al Khayali said the Office has been working on a long-term strategy for combating human trafficking in Qatar, in view of the increasing foreign workforce in the country.
The proposed plan will be finalised soon, he added.
The Qatari House for Human Care and Lodging functioning under the National Office provided shelter to 108 people, including 39 children during 2006 and 2007. Of these, 62 cases were in 2007, from January to August.
The beneficiaries included 32 women, 18 of them housemaids, 17 expatriate workers and two other males who were offered shelter in special circumstances.
The National Office is currently conducting a comprehensive study on housemaids in Qatar with a focus on their problems, in collaboration with the Qatar University, said Saaodon.
Addressing the opening session, Dr Ali bin Simaikh Al Merri, deputy chairman of the National Human Right Committee (NHRC), said Qatar has made major strides in promoting human rights culture and has emerged as the best country in the region as far as human rights awareness is concerned.
“The cooperation of the NHRC with different authorities, the Interior Ministry in particular has helped in accomplishing its goals in protecting human rights…Although human rights is not a new issue, due to the globalisation that has made the world connected, more focus has been put on human rights violations. We have to respond and deal with this fact," he said.
I have sent them my Cv offering my experience on the field about 100 times....no one ever replied. And I was offering it for free....but still..no reply!
If somebody knows an NGO or organization who helps victims of trafficking here in Doha I would love to get involved.
Yes but the issue is on the table now, however, it should have a 24 hour hotline for desperate cases.
What a joke ... they dont even answer the hot line and if they do will tell call back on next working day
I would rather have one rose and a kind word from a friend while I'm here
Than a whole truck load when I'm gone
