Hi I'm Canadian and I am New to Qatar

Just me118
By Just me118

Hi All Sorry to those who notice this mesage in 2 places. I think I posted it to the comments by mistake instead of Forum Topics. I am a new comer to Doha in May from Halifax Canada and after 3 months of being very busy at work I am now looking forward to get out and about to meet a few of the interesting people who appear to be very active on this site.

I try to make sense of some of the posting about where to go but unfortuntely most of the acronyms don't make any sense to me yet. I would be interested in hearing more about some of the usual places people go to socialize and would appreciate seeing the names and locations (hotel name, area perhaps etc)so that I can find them easily without getting lost yet again! However, one advantage of getting lost is you get to know a new part of town!!

Any Canadians out there interested in saying Hi to a Maritimer please let me know
Thanks and hope you are all enjoying the summer!
Ciao
JM

We need a proper ice rink! I'm sorry the circular one at city centre just isn't gonna cut it...I mean seriously.....a circular rink?? What the heck were they thinking?? LOL

I hear a new one opened up in Villagio...and this one is supposed to be the right shape....will let you know when I check it out

Besides, I gotta get back to work....and I think we derailed the thread enough for one day LOL....great chatting with you Swissgirl39!

Stay safe

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?

Too many chiefs and not enough indians LOL

We have 2 coaches (you and I) but no players!

And I think it's not going to be easy to recruit....I can just imagine the conversation with prospective talent:

Hi, we represent the Sand Blizzards organization....any chance you would consider signing on to coming to ply your trade in the desert? LMAO

Stay safe.

Apparently, it's now the name of the whole league!

We can call our team the SAND BLIZZARDS or something equally silly LOL

Stay safe.

P.S. no idea samsam, sorry.

When I was in Dubai (2 years ago), I found out there was a local hockey team (something like 22 Canadians, 1 American, 1 Czech, and 1 Russian) that participated in expat hockey topurnaments all over the world....the funny part:

They are called the Dubai Mighty Camels! I swear! That's gotta be worth a few chuckles.

Stay safe.

You and I will form the Swissanda hockey team and take on all comers!  LOL

Seriously, I LOVE the sport and am an AVID fan.....but I learned to skate late in life (when we immigrated to Canada) and so was never as good as my fellow canucks! I rule at street hockey though.

And besides, ever since my sports injury (6 inch metal rod and 6 pins in my right ankle twelve years ago), just leasurly skating is hard...too bad I guess i'll just have to remain the team's second head coach (from my living room via the TV set) LMAO!

How about you? how's your skating and puck handling skills???

Stay safe.

P.S. So sorry for highjacking the theard justme118, but I just couldn't turn down the chance to chat about my favorite sport....hope you understand and forgive me =p.

Not trying to be mean or anything but isn't almost half the swiss team Canadian anyways? =pp j/k j/k

I just miss the sport, and find it so funny that it is SO prevasive back home (there is literally NO place in the entire city you can go where someone isn't discussing last night's game), and that hardly anyone has ever heard of it here! LOL

My avatar was referred to by someone as some sort of horseshoe! I almost fell off my chair clutching my side...it hurt so much from laughing.

Stay safe.

Did Mars clinch the North-Eastern Divisin of the NHL?? If so then yes that's where i'm from! LMAO

I was just being snarky because almost every Canadian would be able to recognize my avatar instantly and know what city i'm representing....oh and the above comment was about the NHL (sorry another Canadian reference)...I figure this is about the only thread where I have a chance of running into someone who knows what the heck i'm talking about.

Stay safe.

There's a Canadians in Qatar group that organizes events (Canadian inspired like the terry fox run, and others)....just ask the emabssy or your warden for the groups contact info (sorry don't have it on me at work).

Hope you are enjoying your stay in Qatar, and stay safe.

Good day pal.

owen gave you the lead. There are active members here who organize some social gatherings and activities.

Guess you will need at first to get used to the structure of this site. Unfortunately you might miss some events if you do not keep checking here and there unless you join suck groups then you can be notified or track whats going on.

Unfortunately also, most of the members when they register, they put Qatar as country and in fact it should be used for nationality coz we all should be here in Qatar or planning to travel here.

Last thing. I feel sorry for missing us on Friday. Guess I saw you there but did not figure out that a new member will be joining us. I was sitting there alone at around 9 and the gang already left. Noticed a western guy of my age checking the right and left side of the jetty. Anyhow, days are coming and hope you can join us in next trips.

Regards

we have social group here where once a week (or even mid weekdays, whenever they feel like going out) we get together, to chat, dine or simply hang out with fellow Qler's...(currently, they have this fishing trip going on -- only guys..)

hope to see you on one of the gatherings..

btw, there are canadians here...am just not sure who (am lazy checking on profiles)..hehehe...
